Summary

Overview

Syoss is a haircare brand owned by the German company Henkel AG & Co. KGaA [8]. According to its own account, the brand was founded in 1977 in Osaka, Japan, by two hair-solutions specialists identified as Sharp and Yamahatsu [2]. The name is drawn from those origins: Sharp, Yamahatsu, Osaka, Seventy, Seven. The line spans hair colour, care and styling, and is positioned as salon-quality performance made affordable for use at home.

The brand as most European shoppers know it dates from a later moment. Henkel relaunched Syoss as a mass-market retail brand under its Schwarzkopf & Henkel arm in 2008-2009, and it is this launch, rather than the Japanese founding, that some sources treat as the brand's beginning [9]. Syoss is active as of 2026, with a live brand site and continuing product launches.

Origin and founders

By the company's own account, Syoss was co-developed by professional hairdressers, stylists and colourists in 1977 in Osaka, Japan [2]. Henkel's 2020 relaunch materials repeat this origin, again dating the brand to 1977 in Osaka [7]. The brand cites "more than 45 years of hair history" and frames its identity around Japanese heritage.

The founding location is not entirely consistent across sources. The brand's own about-us page states Osaka, and derives the name Syoss in part from that city [2]; the branding-history site 1000logos instead places the origin in Tokyo at the end of the 1970s [10]. The Osaka attribution comes from the brand directly, while the Tokyo claim appears to conflate a general late-1970s Japanese origin with the capital.

History and milestones

Syoss traces its origin to 1977 in Osaka. Its wider commercial life began three decades later: Tina Müller, then running Henkel's haircare business, launched Syoss as a European retail brand in 2008-2009, shortly after the financial crisis [9]. A Bank of America analyst quoted by Women's Wear Daily called it "the most successful hair care launch in years," describing how it "resonated unbelievably well with the German consumer, because it was perceived as a professional brand in a big bottle and at an affordable price" [9]. The same report notes that momentum slowed afterwards, which it attributes partly to sharper competition and to Müller's departure.

In September 2020, Henkel relaunched the range around a new Amino Complex formula, seven Asian botanical ingredients, and packaging changes including shampoo bottles made from 98% recycled material [7].

Ownership

Syoss is owned by Henkel AG & Co. KGaA and sits within the company's consumer brands business, alongside hair and body care names such as Schwarzkopf, Dial, Fa and Palette [8]. According to Henkel, the brand operates local websites across more than 20 countries, including Germany, France, Poland, Japan and South Korea [6].

Philosophy and positioning

Syoss builds its identity around three stated pillars — professionalism, intensity and confidence — and the promise of salon-grade results at home. Henkel frames the brand's mission as making professional haircare affordable and accessible to consumers who "want salon-cared, salon-styled and salon-beautiful hair like directly after the hairdresser" [6]. Its target audience, per the parent company, is women and men aged roughly 25 to 50. The current tagline is "YOU. INTENSIFIED."

Products and innovation

The range covers three main areas: colour, care and styling. In colour, the brand's signature is Oleo Intense, a permanent oil-based dye that a niche review describes as marketed by Schwarzkopf & Henkel as "the 1st permanent hair dye cream with oils," formulated without ammonia [11]. Other colour products include a permanent intensive coloration the brand says delivers up to 100 days of professional colour intensity, and the multi-shade Color Glaze line. The care line is organised around targeted shampoos such as Intense Keratin, Intense Volume and Intense Repair.

The 2020 relaunch centred on a proprietary Amino Complex — selected amino acids the company describes as building blocks of keratin, the structural protein in hair [7]. Henkel paired this with seven Asian botanical ingredients, among them wakame seaweed, camellia (tsubaki) flowers, purple rice, blue lotus, water lily and ginseng. On its philosophy page, the brand attaches performance claims to each category, including "20x Stronger Hair," 100 days of colour intensity, and heat protection up to 230°C.

Recognition

Syoss has drawn press attention chiefly through its parent company. Beyond the 2008 launch coverage in Women's Wear Daily, Henkel's own corporate site describes Syoss as "the most successful hair cosmetic launch of the past 10 years" [6]. The brand works with Japanese session hairstylist Kiyoko Odo as a brand ambassador and hair creative director, featured in its "Roots to Tips" video series.

Current status

Syoss is active. Its brand site carries a 2026 copyright and current product lines, and Henkel positions it as one of its global hair brands with ongoing launches and active social media accounts [6]. The brand is available across more than 20 markets, including the Nordic countries.
