Summary

Overview

Barnängen is a Swedish personal-care brand founded in Stockholm in 1868, known for body wash, bar soap and hair care sold mainly through Nordic supermarkets and pharmacies. It traces its roots to Barnängens Tekniska Fabrik, a soap and toiletries maker on Södermalm, and presents itself as one of Sweden's most familiar household names, used across several generations [6].

Since 1995 the brand has been owned by the German consumer-goods group Henkel, which operates it as a Nordic submark within Henkel Norden AB [7]. Henkel holds the Barnängen name only in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark [6]. The brand remains commercially active, with new formulas and packaging announced for 2026 and continued retail distribution across the region.

Origin and founders

The company was started in 1868 by the wholesaler Johan Wilhelm Holmström (1832–1886), who put up the capital to rescue a struggling ink-manufacturing venture and relocated the operation to Bondegatan on Södermalm in Stockholm [7]. In its earliest years the firm made ink, shoe polish and a luxury Eau de Cologne under primitive conditions, mixing soap over open flames and bottling by hand. Soap production followed in 1873, with each bar reportedly taking up to ten days to make by hand.

Holmström is recorded by the brand, by Henkel and by the Swedish Wikipedia as the founder [7]. Some informal accounts instead name Lars Montén; this appears to be a confusion, since Montén was the owner of the candle factory in Alvik that Barnängen bought in 1929, not the founder of the company. Contemporary profiles describe Holmström as an unusually progressive employer for his era, providing workers with free medical care and medicine from around 1870, along with regular working hours and vacation rights.

History and milestones

Barnängen's products won early recognition at international exhibitions, including London in 1871 and Copenhagen and Moscow in 1872. In 1876 the company was granted Royal Warrant status as purveyor to the Swedish royal family, a designation it has held since [3]. The bear that became the company's emblem was adopted in 1885, said to have been inspired by a private menagerie kept by Holmström. The mouthwash Vademecum was launched in 1897.

After Holmström's death in 1886, his sons Erik and Nils continued the business. In 1929 the firm bought Lars Montén's candle factory in Alvik, and the following year moved its operations there from Södermalm into a new, modern plant. In 1950 Barnängen adopted De Laval's Centripure process for soap manufacturing, which the company describes as a world first that sharply cut production time [3]. A children's product line developed together with paediatricians and dermatologists for sensitive skin dates to the brand's earlier decades.

A new factory on Ekerö was inaugurated by the Swedish royal couple in 1983, alongside the introduction of a "Barnängen Creme" line that later became hair care. The shower cream that the company calls its family favourite was launched in 1990. In 2017 the brand expanded internationally as "Barnängen — Founded in Stockholm," with Nordic Care and Nordic Rituals lines built around Swedish botanicals such as cloudberries, elderflower and birch. It marked its 150th anniversary in 2018.

Ownership

Barnängen passed through several owners over the twentieth century. It was bought by a consortium together with Tomtens Fabrik AB in 1928 and was for a long period owned by KemaNord, later KemaNobel. In 1992 it was acquired by the German company Schwarzkopf [7]. When Henkel took over Schwarzkopf in 1995, Barnängen became part of Henkel Norden AB [7]. Henkel owns the brand only within the Nordic region, and markets it as a Swedish heritage name there [6].

Within Henkel's portfolio, Barnängen sits alongside sister brands including Schwarzkopf, Schwarzkopf Professional, Syoss, Palette, Indola, Got2b and Fa.

Philosophy and positioning

Barnängen frames itself around naturally caring products for the whole family, a positioning the company says has stayed constant since 1868. Both the brand and Henkel tie this to the Swedish notion of lagom — roughly "just right," the balance between too little and too much — and Henkel describes the brand's idea of beauty as feeling "confident, authentic, and balanced." The company summarises its values as natural, caring, pure and honest, and positions the products as down-to-earth and unpretentious, a "childhood friend" that grows with the user.

Products and innovation

The range centres on body wash, bar soap and hair care, with separate children's and men's lines. The bar soap, in production since 1873, is the brand's oldest signature product; Henkel describes a reworked version of its technology as the basis for the brand's signature Cold Cream ingredient [6]. The 1990 shower cream remains a flagship item, and later products introduced yoghurt protein and aloe vera. Other ingredients the brand highlights include raspberry, sandalwood and organic herb extracts.

The products are positioned at drugstore price level and sold through multiple channels. According to the brand, its core range is found mainly in Swedish grocery and pharmacy chains, while its baby products are stocked in both grocery stores and pharmacies.

Sustainability

Barnängen states that its formulas are largely vegan, while noting that a few ingredients in its range — such as yoghurt protein and honey — are not [4]. The company says its products are not tested on animals, and that parent company Henkel has not conducted animal testing since 1989 [5]. On packaging and emissions, the brand set goals to make its packaging fully recyclable with 35 percent recycled plastic by 2025, and to cut the climate footprint of its product range by a third by 2030 [4]. The sustainability page lists no third-party certifications.

Current status

Barnängen is an active brand owned by Henkel rather than an independent company. It continues to launch products — including reformulations and an expanded hair-care range announced for 2026 — and maintains a live brand site and broad retail distribution across the Nordic countries. Henkel's ownership is limited to Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, so the brand's reach is regional rather than global.
