Overview
Schwarzkopf Professional is the salon division of the German hair-care brand Schwarzkopf, which traces its origins to 1898 [1]. Its roots lie with the chemist and pharmacist Hans Schwarzkopf, who opened a paint, drug and perfume shop in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin that year [7]. The professional arm supplies colour, care, styling and forming products to salons, and the company says it serves stylists in more than 150 countries [10]. Schwarzkopf has been part of the German consumer-goods group Henkel since 1995 [11].
The professional line has no single founding date separate from the 1898 origin of the wider Schwarzkopf brand; its own history is usually marked from later milestones, chiefly the launch of the IGORA ROYAL colour range in 1960 and the opening of the Schwarzkopf Academy in 1989. It remains an active, global brand aimed at professional hairdressers rather than home users.

Origin & founders
Hans Schwarzkopf (1874–1921) was a German chemist and entrepreneur. In 1898 he opened a shop on Passauer Strasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg selling paints, drugs and perfumery [7], and this drugstore is treated as the cornerstone of the brand. The company frames that shop as laying the foundation for what its heritage page calls one of the most important hair-cosmetics companies in the world.
Sources place the first product a few years later, though they differ on the exact year. The company and the trade-history site Hairfinder date the water-soluble powder shampoo — marketed as "the shampoo with the black head" — to 1903 [6][8], while Wikipedia records the launch as 1904 [7]. Both accounts agree it became the first branded hair cosmetic product in Germany. According to Wikipedia, the powder dissolved in water and cost 20 pfennigs a bag, and its success led Schwarzkopf to give up the drugstore in the same year to concentrate on production and marketing.
After Hans Schwarzkopf died in 1921, his wife Martha Schwarzkopf ran the company until 1935, when she passed it to their three sons.
History & milestones
The company's early history is a sequence of product firsts in hair cosmetics. In 1927 it introduced what several sources describe as the world's first mass-produced liquid shampoo, and the same period saw the start of dedicated research at the Schwarzkopf Institute of Hair Hygiene [7][8]. The post-war years brought further launches: the Onaltherma cold perm and the first home hair colour, Poly Color, in 1947, and, according to Hairfinder, an early cream shampoo in a tube in 1949 sold under the Schauma name.
The milestones most specific to the professional division came later. In 1960 Schwarzkopf Professional launched IGORA ROYAL, described on the brand's heritage page as its top coloration line; the company says colour has been at the heart of its work for over a century, with IGORA itself representing more than fifty years of that expertise. In 1989 it opened the Schwarzkopf Academy, an international seminar and training centre. The professional brand entered the United States and Canada in 2001 [10]. Today the company markets itself on "125+ years of expertise," counted from the 1898 founding.
Ownership
Schwarzkopf became part of Henkel in 1995 [11], and the professional line operates within Henkel's Consumer Brands division. Henkel's wider hair portfolio places Schwarzkopf Professional alongside sister brands including the consumer Schwarzkopf ranges such as Palette and Syoss, together with Indola, Joico, Alterna, Sexy Hair, DevaCurl and Got2b.
Philosophy & positioning
Schwarzkopf Professional presents itself as a "partner in craft" for hairdressers, with a stated aim of giving stylists the tools, education and inspiration to develop their careers. Its central tagline is "For Every You," which the company frames as individual, tailored support on the grounds that "no two people working in hair are the same." Innovation is described by the brand as being "at the core of our DNA," alongside an emphasis on community and on adapting services to individual clients. The company sums up its purpose in a short mission statement: "We transform hair. We create beauty. We fuel your creativity. We unleash potential."
Education is treated as part of the offer rather than an add-on. The company runs Academies of Hair in twelve locations — among them Dubai, Vienna, Athens, Barcelona, Brussels and Hamburg — and provides digital courses through a free eAcademy platform alongside face-to-face seminars and in-salon training. It argues that continual education builds motivated salon teams and strengthens client loyalty.
Products & innovation
The professional range spans four areas: colour, care, styling and forming. Its best-known colour line is IGORA, with IGORA ROYAL positioned as a permanent colour that the company markets as "the colourist's choice" and says delivers up to 100% coverage of white hair. Alongside it sit variants such as IGORA VIBRANCE and an ammonia-free IGORA ZERO AMM. BLONDME is the flagship lightening and blonde-colour line, and BC Bonacure anchors the care range; a 2026 relaunch, Bonacure Repair Rescue+, is promoted with the claim of "+100% stronger, resilient and repaired hair." Styling is led by OSiS, with the SESSION LABEL and Silhouette lines alongside it, while the forming range covers perms and straightening under names such as Natural Styling and Strait Therapy.
Much of the brand's recent development centres on bond-building — a category of products that aim to protect the internal structure of hair during colouring and lightening. Schwarzkopf Professional markets several proprietary technologies under this theme, including Schwarzkopf Bonding Technology, BOND Enforcing Technology and BONDFINITY Technology. In its BLONDME range the company attributes the effect to succinic acid, which it says forms a protective layer during lifting, with hydrolyzed keratin and marula oil added for shine and smoothness [9]. It describes the BOND Enforcing Technology as built into the colour and care range so that no separate bonding additive is needed, and says its BONDFINITY care range forms bonds within the inner hair fibre to help prevent breakage. Its IGORA VARIO BLOND lightener has been upgraded with a Fibre Bond Technology that the company says offers up to eight levels of lift with minimised breakage. Other named complexes include TrueLift and a Pro-Age Complex combining collagen and siliamine for mature hair.
Sustainability
Schwarzkopf Professional has published packaging and climate targets. The company states an aim for all its packaging to be designed for recyclability or reusability and to cut virgin fossil-based plastic by half, and it says it does not test its cosmetic products on animals, citing the EU cosmetics regulation in force since 2013. By 2030 it targets a climate-positive carbon footprint at its production sites and electricity purchased entirely from renewable sources. It reports that its Wassertrüdingen site in Germany became carbon-neutral in 2022, saving 7,500 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions a year. Product-level claims include up to 92% naturally derived ingredients in the tbh colour line and a majority of the SESSION LABEL styling range being free from animal-derived ingredients; the IGORA ZERO AMM packaging, according to a Henkel-distributed profile, uses recycled aluminium and paper. The brand also runs a social programme, Shaping Futures, which it says has trained 3,500 young adults across 33 countries since 2010.
Recognition
Schwarzkopf Professional has been the subject of trade coverage, including a Henkel-distributed brand profile and features on its BLONDME bonding technology in the professional beauty press [9][10]. In the United States it has associated with named colourists, appointing Tracey Cunningham as Creative Director of Color & Technique and signing Jacob Schwartz as a US Hair Color Trend Ambassador.
Current status
The brand is active worldwide. Its 2026 activity includes new product launches such as Bonacure Repair Rescue+ and an OSiS Curls & Waves range, a festival collaboration at Primavera Sound in June 2026, and the recent US ambassador signings. It continues to operate as the professional hair division of Schwarzkopf under Henkel.
