System Professional

System Professional is a professional, salon-exclusive hair-care brand created in 1974 by a group of Wella scientists [1]. It is not an independent company but a line within the German haircare group Wella, whose own roots trace to Franz Ströher, a hairdresser who founded Wella in 1880 in Rothenkirchen, Saxony [2]. The brand is built around a modular "system" of products and a proprietary in-salon diagnostic, EnergyCode, that is used to prescribe personalised treatments.

As a Wella line, System Professional has changed hands with its parent several times: Wella passed from Procter & Gamble to Coty and, since 2020, to the private-equity firm KKR [2]. The line itself remains in active distribution through professional channels across Europe, including the Nordic markets.

System Professional dates its beginning to 1974, when, according to the brand's own account, a group of Wella scientists set out to rework professional hair care around what it calls transformative performance [1]. The result was described as the first modular system for performance care — a range meant to be combined rather than used as fixed sets. The company frames the System Professional "code" as a shared shorthand used by hairdressers to build tailored regimens, a positioning it summarises as having become "the secret language of the world's top hairdressers" [1].

Because the brand grew out of Wella rather than a separate founding, its geographic origin follows Wella's: a German company established in Saxony in 1880 [2].

System Professional sits inside the Wella Company, and its ownership history is Wella's. In 2003, Procter & Gamble acquired a majority stake in Wella for roughly US$5.7 billion [2]. In 2015, Coty acquired Wella as part of a roughly US$12.5 billion deal involving Procter & Gamble's specialty beauty business [2]. Since 2020, Wella has operated as an independent company with KKR as majority owner, holding about 74 percent, while Coty retained a minority stake [2].

Within that portfolio, System Professional is one of several Wella brands, alongside names such as Sebastian Professional, Nioxin and OPI.

The brand positions itself as personalised, salon-prescribed hair care rather than an off-the-shelf range. Its central idea is EnergyCode, a diagnostic that, the company says, maps each client's "hair energy" profile and prescribes a treatment from more than 174 million possible combinations [1]. The associated EnergyCode Complex is described as a technology meant to re-establish the hair's natural lipid balance and protect keratin, using formulas the brand characterises as ultra-light so as not to overload the hair.

An independent 2016 review by the blog Beauty Junkie London described System Professional in similar terms — as a customisable "system" of products that clients combine into their own mix — and reported broadly positive results after an in-salon consultation followed by home use [3].

The brand's signature line is LuxeOil, which it presents as its first high-performance oil care range. Its LuxeOil Reconstructive Elixir is described as rebuilding hair from within, and the company states that hair is "up to 10x smoother immediately after the first application" [4]. Other products noted in independent coverage include a Liquid Hair weekly treatment, conditioners and a volumising foam [3]. Across the range, distribution runs through professional and salon channels rather than mass retail.

System Professional is not an independent brand but an acquired line within the Wella Company, whose ownership has moved from Procter & Gamble to Coty to KKR [2]. The line remains commercially active: LuxeOil has been marketed in an updated 100ml format with a refreshed label, and current System Professional category pages appear on Wella's professional stores in several European markets, including Finland and Sweden. Its distribution stays within the professional salon channel.
