Overview
Tanologist is a British self-tanning brand founded in 2018 by Lottie Tomlinson, a make-up artist and beauty influencer [7]. It launched as a range of vegan, dermatologically tested sunless-tanning products sold exclusively through the UK health-and-beauty retailer Superdrug, and has since grown into a multi-channel brand distributed internationally, including across the Nordic markets. The company remains active, with a live e-commerce site, an ongoing product range and sales through retailers and TikTok Shop.
Today Tanologist sits within Future Beauty Labs, the group that also owns the self-tan brands Tan-Luxe and Isle of Paradise [8]. In May 2020 the US private-equity firm Yellow Wood Partners acquired a majority stake in these brands through the purchase of Future Beauty Labs [10].
Origin & founders
Tanologist was created by Lottie Tomlinson, whom trade coverage described at launch as a make-up artist and beauty influencer [7]. According to the founder, the idea grew out of years of personal experimentation: "As a make-up artist and beauty nerd, I'm constantly experimenting with different products — mixing tans into my foundation and moisturiser," she said, adding that she developed the range "to deliver everything I wanted in a tan: clean, clear and streak-free results" [7]. The brand connects this origin to Tomlinson's own experience of breakouts from heavier, drying tanning formulas, and frames the line around what it calls "clear skin that GLOWS."
The launch was announced in July 2018, with the range initially available only at Superdrug in the United Kingdom [7]. An orchestrator note recorded the founding year as approximately 2019, but multiple trade sources documenting the July 2018 launch place it in 2018.
Ownership
Tanologist's current parent is Future Beauty Labs, described in industry coverage as "the parent company of Tan-Luxe, Tanologist and Isle of Paradise" [8]. Future Beauty Labs began in Glasgow in 2016 and operates out of Glasgow and New York [8]. In May 2020, Yellow Wood Partners took a majority stake in the group's self-tan brands — Tan-Luxe, Isle of Paradise and Tanologist — by acquiring Future Beauty Labs [10]; these sit under the Future Beauty Brands entity. A more recent addition to the wider portfolio is the skincare brand BYOMA.
Sources differ on how the parent is named. The ethical-consumer directory The Good Shopping Guide lists the parent company as "We Are Luxe Ltd" [9], the original UK operating company behind the Tan-Luxe family, while current corporate materials and the brand's own contact-page email domain point to Future Beauty Labs / Future Beauty Brands as the present operating parent.
Philosophy & positioning
Tanologist positions itself as a vegan, cruelty-free and dermatologically tested self-tan brand centred on a clean, streak-free glow that does not clog pores or cause breakouts. Its stated tagline is "Streak-Free, Long-Lasting, Natural-Looking Tan," and its marketing emphasises the absence of orange tones, self-tan smell and product transfer. The company presents itself within the broader clean-beauty movement and as one of a wave of influencer- and celebrity-founded beauty brands of the 2010s.
Products & innovation
The range spans face and body self-tan across several formats: self-tan drops that can be mixed into a moisturiser, serum or foundation; self-tan waters; clear and tinted mousses; and a gradual daily-glow lotion, alongside instant bronzing products, an airbrush mist and application tools. The brand highlights four plant-derived ingredients — aloe vera, described as hydrating and soothing; pink grapefruit, noted for toning; goji berry, called an antioxidant; and juniper, credited with reducing the appearance of blemishes.
Tanologist describes itself as "the World's first vegan self-tanning range Dermatologically Tested and Approved" [3], and says its products are suitable for sensitive skin, non-comedogenic and "not linked with causing breakouts." According to the company, the tan is developed to last up to seven days, with reapplication recommended roughly every three days [2]. The products contain no SPF, and the brand advises using separate sun protection. On distribution, Tanologist launched as a Superdrug exclusive [6] but now sells directly through its own online store, TikTok Shop and additional retailers, giving it a multi-channel model.
Recognition & press
The brand drew trade coverage at its 2018 launch, including in Cosmetics Business, which reported Tomlinson introducing the range at Superdrug [7]. Beauty Independent later identified Future Beauty Labs as the parent of Tan-Luxe, Tanologist and Isle of Paradise [8]. Tomlinson has remained the brand's founder and public face.
Current status
Tanologist is an active brand. It maintains a live e-commerce site with a current product range and an ongoing blog, and sells through TikTok Shop and major retailers across multiple regions, including the Nordic markets [1].
