Overview
The Saem is a South Korean cosmetics brand launched in 2010 in Seoul [1]. It sits within the broad, affordable end of the K-beauty market, selling skincare, makeup and body care built around natural ingredients sourced from around the world and paired with the research history of its parent company. The brand is a subsidiary of Hankook Cosmetics, one of Korea's older beauty manufacturers, and remains active, distributed through K-beauty retailers across Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The name is drawn from a Korean word meaning a fountain or spring, which the company uses as a metaphor for an ongoing flow of wisdom and skin wellness. That naturalist framing runs through its marketing and product lines, from Jeju aloe vera to Icelandic mineral water and snail mucin.

Origins
The Saem opened its first store in Myoung-Dong, a central Seoul shopping district, in August 2010 [1]. It was created by Hankook Cosmetics as a full-range cosmetics label, positioned from the start around the idea of "the wisdom of beauty hidden in each country of the world" and drawing on its parent's manufacturing and research background.
Much of the brand's founding narrative leans on that parent heritage rather than on The Saem itself. Company copy referring to "over 60 years of R&D" and "the past 50 years gathering data on natural ingredients" describes Hankook Cosmetics' history, not the 2010 brand [2]. Hankook Cosmetics dates its own founding to 1962, while the present corporate entity, Hankook Cosmetics Co., Ltd., was formed as a separate division in 2010, the same year The Saem launched [3].
Ownership
The Saem's parent company is Hankook Cosmetics Co., Ltd., named consistently across the brand's own about page and Hankook's official corporate site [2][3]. An internal project note had recorded the parent as "Hannol Cosmetics," but every harvested source, including the parent's own website, gives "Hankook," and that spelling has been treated as correct.
Hankook Cosmetics is a long-established Korean manufacturer. Its published history records a series of domestic firsts, including Korea's first liquid shampoo in 1974, a 1978 listing on the Korea Stock Exchange, and technical cooperation agreements with L'Oréal between 1980 and 1995 and with Lancôme between 1981 and 1992 [3]. The company's manufacturing is based in South Korea, with a factory in Eumseong, Chungcheongbuk-do, occupied since 2006 [3].
Philosophy and positioning
The Saem describes its approach as natural ingredients backed by science, stating that it believes in "the power of nature — more specifically, in the power of natural ingredients backed by science" [2]. The company says it sources botanicals from natural environments worldwide and combines them with its parent's research records to address individual skin concerns.
In 2013 the brand adopted the slogan "Global Eco," a shift the company frames around eco-conscious packaging and global ingredient sourcing [1]. Priced at the drugstore end of the market, its products are sold through multiple K-beauty retailers internationally rather than a single channel.
Products and innovation
The brand's range spans cleansers, creams, sun care, mists, masks and body care, organised largely around signature ingredients. These include Jeju Island aloe vera, Icelandic mineral water, Manuka honey, royal jelly, snail mucin and collagen. Representative products include the Jeju Fresh Aloe Soothing Gel 99%, marketed as containing 99% aloe vera extract; the Care Plus Manuka Honey Cream, built around New Zealand Manuka honey and royal jelly; and the Iceland Hydrating Collagen Eye Stick.
Its best-known product is the Cover Perfection Tip Concealer, a low-cost concealer widely cited across K-beauty retailers and blogs as a staple of the brand [4]. According to product listings, it is formulated with an oxygen complex, glacier water and reflective powder, and carries SPF 28 PA++ [1].
Recognition
The Cover Perfection Tip Concealer accounts for most of the brand's documented recognition. The Saem ranked first in the concealer category of Korea's Brand Customer Satisfaction Index for five consecutive years, from 2015 to 2019 [4]. In 2019 the brand also placed first in the concealer category of the @cosme The Best Cosmetics Awards and won a Cosmo Beauty Awards Grand Prize for its Mineralizing Creamy Concealer [5]. The concealer has additionally been featured in a Vogue Korea list of concealers. This recognition comes chiefly from Korean publications and awards rather than English-language press.
Current status
The Saem remains active. It maintains Korean and international social accounts and is distributed continuously through global K-beauty retailers, including YesStyle, Stylevana, Sweetcare and iHerb [6]. Fifteen years after launch and backed by a parent company with a decades-long manufacturing history, it operates across Asian, European and American markets.
