Thiers-Issard Sabatier

Thiers-Issard Sabatier is a French cutlery house founded in 1884 in Thiers, in the Puy-de-Dôme region, by the blacksmith Pierre Thiers (1860–1929), who built his reputation on hand-forged straight razors [2]. The name pairs the founder's surname with his wife's maiden name, Issard, a device chosen to set the firm apart from other Thiers razor-making families working in the same town. More than a century later the company still forges razors and blades in Thiers, and is often described alongside Germany's DOVO Solingen as one of the leading makers of straight razors in Europe.

The house takes its fuller name from the Sabatier Elephant mark, a Thiers kitchen-knife brand it came to own. That cutlery line sits outside grooming, but within shaving the company is known for carbon-steel straight razors, its hollow-ground "singing" blades, and a full range of wet-shaving accessories.

Pierre Thiers established the workshop in 1884, forging straight razors by hand in a region long associated with the French cutlery trade. According to the company, he attached his wife's surname to his own to avoid confusion with the several Thiers families recorded among the master cutlers of Thiers, a distinction the firm traces back to a local charter of 1582 [2]. After the founder's death in 1929, the business passed through several generations of the Thiers family, with sons and later relatives continuing operations until the line ended in the 1980s.

The company began making razor blades in 1920. Over the decades it broadened from razors into wider cutlery. Sources differ on when that diversification into kitchen knives took hold: Thiers-Issard's own account dates its acquisition of the Sabatier Elephant mark to the 1950s [2], while an editorial history places the purchase of a Sabatier kitchen-knife maker around 1905 [7]. These may describe two separate events — an early move into cutlery and the later acquisition of the specific Sabatier Elephant mark — rather than a single contradictory date.

The firm's fortunes turned in the early 1980s. One trade account records that poor management and trading difficulties in the United States pushed the company into bankruptcy [7]. Ownership then left the founding family. The brand's own site and Wikipedia date the sale to Gilles Reynewaeter to 1985 [6], while the same editorial history gives 1984 [7]. Under Reynewaeter the operating entity became SNETI Thiers-Issard, and the new owner set about reviving and expanding production, vigorously exporting knives and pocket knives.

A series of further acquisitions followed under Reynewaeter's ownership: the Pigeat edge-tool works in 1995, Perard-Dassaud and its "Laguiole Authentique" mark in 2001, and the Bost Chatelet foundry in 2007 [2]. By around 2000 straight-razor manufacturing had shrunk to a small fraction of factory output, but a renewed focus on the reviving market for traditional wet shaving reversed that: by the time of one 2012 account, straight razors and shaving accessories made up more than 60% of the factory's production, exported to markets including Germany, Russia and Canada [7].

Thiers-Issard has been controlled by Gilles Reynewaeter and his family since the mid-1980s. The legal operating company is the Société Nouvelle des Établissements Thiers-Issard, a simplified joint-stock company (SAS) registered at Clermont-Ferrand. It has no larger corporate parent; the surrounding cutlery businesses acquired since 1985 are held within the same family-owned group.

The core of the range is the straight razor, forged in carbon steel and delivered ready to shave. The most distinctive of these are the "singing razors" (rasoirs sonnants) — fully hollow-ground blades so thin that they emit a ringing tone when a fingernail is drawn across the edge. The company describes them as the most precise grind and the finest blades it makes. Wikipedia notes that the demanding standard carries a rejection rate of roughly 25% for these blades [6]. Alongside them the house produces Damascus-steel razors and a full set of wet-shaving accessories, including shaving soap, brushes, strops and sharpening pastes.

Craftsmanship is central to how the firm presents itself. It says about 90% of the work is done by hand, with machines assisting rather than replacing manual forging and finishing, and it holds the French state's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant ("Living Heritage Company") label, a distinction recognising rare craft know-how [2]. The company states its products are made in France, with the occasional exception of imported woods used for handles. Separately, the Sabatier Elephant name covers a line of forged kitchen knives — cutlery rather than grooming — made in the same Thiers workshops.

Wikipedia characterises Thiers-Issard as one of the top cutlery firms in Europe and, with DOVO Solingen, a leading manufacturer of straight razors [6]. A specialist retailer history describes it more pointedly as "the last French company to produce straight razors" [8]. Its singing razors in particular have a following among traditional wet-shaving enthusiasts and collectors.

The company remains active, operating from its workshops in Thiers with a live catalogue of straight razors and shaving accessories and exports reaching around thirty countries [6]. Its trajectory over recent decades — from near-collapse in the 1980s to a business built around reviving interest in traditional shaving — has kept a long-standing craft in continuous production.
