Overview
Tołpa is a Polish dermocosmetics brand built around a patented peat extract, produced by Torf Corporation in Kąty Wrocławskie in south-western Poland. The company traces its origins to 1989, when Torf Corporation was established [9], though the underlying science is older: the brand is named after the botanist Professor Stanisław Tołpa, who began researching the cosmetic and regenerative properties of peat in the 1960s [8][9]. The brand styles its name in lowercase with a trailing period ("tołpa."). It remains active, with a live retail site, a current product range and a loyalty programme, and in 2024 its owner changed hands.
The company positions Tołpa as a science-led skincare brand that argues customers should not have to choose between effectiveness, naturalness and safety. Its products are sold across skincare, body care, haircare and men's grooming, and it markets itself under the tagline "mniej więcej" ("more or less" / "less more").

Origin and founders
Tołpa takes its name from Stanisław Tołpa (1901–1996), a Polish professor of botany whose research career, in Wikipedia's summary, "was devoted to peat" [8]. He developed a classification of European peats and, from the 1960s, shifted his focus toward their chemical and biological properties. According to Wikipedia, a peat preparation based on this work "made him famous" and was used with patients who had multiple sclerosis [8].
The brand's own account frames this as a long personal quest. On its founder page, the company describes the professor's "greatest dream" of "a peat extract with exceptional, regenerative properties," which "after many years of research" he finally created. That extract became the base ingredient of the cosmetics that carry his name.
The commercial enterprise came later. Torf Corporation, the manufacturer behind the brand, was established in 1989 [9]. The brand site itself does not state a founding year, and the 1989 date rests on independent trade and editorial sources rather than Tołpa's own pages; the botanical research that gave the brand its identity predates the company by roughly three decades.
Products and positioning
The brand's central claim is its raw material. Peat, it notes, forms extremely slowly — roughly 0.5 to 1 millimetre a year — in ecologically clean layers, and the company extracts from it what it calls "torf tołpa®," a proprietary essence of active substances. According to the extract's description, it contains fulvic acids, phenolic acids, amino acids, sugars and peptides. A related material, "borowina tołpa®" — a peat mud the company describes as a variety of peat — is used chiefly in body care, where it is credited with firming and detoxifying effects.
The trade publication Dermatologia i Kosmetologia Praktyczna reported in 2024 that Tołpa is, in its words, "the only brand in the world" to have patented an extraction technology for two active substances, both peat and peat mud [7]. The company attributes protective, moisturising, regenerating, immunity-strengthening and antioxidant properties to the peat extract.
The range spans facial care, body care, haircare and men's grooming, organised into named lines including ideal age (anti-aging), dermo face (enzyme-based cleansing) and sebio. (targeting imperfections). Formulations draw on familiar actives such as hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid and peptides alongside the peat-derived ingredients. The brand's stated philosophy is minimalist — "less means more," with what it calls only necessary ingredients — and centred on improving the skin's condition over time.
Ethics and sustainability
Tołpa describes its products as completely vegan and not tested on animals, and states that they are free from SLS/SLES, petroleum derivatives, parabens, silicones, ethyl alcohol and artificial dyes. These are the company's own statements; the packet records no independent third-party certifications.
On environmental impact, the company outlines a packaging approach built on reducing material, reusing recycled content (PCR tubes and RPET bottles) and using single-material construction for easier recycling. It says most of its packaging comes from recycled materials [7]. It also reports a partnership with Climate Strategies Poland to calculate its emissions, and states that converting its vehicle fleet from diesel to petrol cut its carbon footprint by 22 percent.
Ownership
Tołpa's operating company, Torf Corporation Sp. z o.o., changed ownership in 2024. According to the business reference site ccprogres.pl, Bielenda Kosmetyki Naturalne acquired 100 percent of Torf Corporation that year, in a transaction backed by the investor Innova Capital; the previous majority shareholder was Resource Partners [9]. Sources differ on how to name the parent: the brand's own site identifies its owner as "Bielenda Group S.A." [1], while the editorial source specifies the acquiring legal entity as Bielenda Kosmetyki Naturalne [9]. Both point to the same Polish cosmetics group.
Current status
The brand is active. It operates a live retail site, tolpa.pl, with current product lines, promotions and a "Klub tołpa" loyalty programme, and its most recent recorded corporate event is the 2024 Bielenda acquisition [9]. Beyond its home market in Poland, the brand is also sold in other European markets.
