Summary

Overview

Tommy Hilfiger Fragrance is the licensed perfume line of the American lifestyle house Tommy Hilfiger, founded in 1985 by the designer Thomas Jacob Hilfiger in the United States [3]. The fashion company itself dates to 1985, but the fragrance business is younger: it began in 1993, when Tommy Hilfiger signed its first global beauty-licensing agreement with the Estée Lauder Companies — the first time Lauder had partnered with an outside designer [4]. The line remains active, sold across the Nordic markets and worldwide under the current licensee, Give Back Beauty [5].

The fragrance brand is positioned around what the company calls classic American style with a modern twist. Its range is built chiefly around men's scents, though it has long carried women's fragrances as well.

Origin and founders

The Tommy Hilfiger Corporation was founded in 1985 by Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, born in 1951, with backing from The Murjani Group [3]. The house is American in origin. While the label established itself first in apparel, its move into fragrance came in the early 1990s through a licensing arrangement rather than in-house production — a common structure for designer scents, in which a specialist beauty company creates and distributes the perfumes under the fashion brand's name.

That arrangement began in 1993 with Estée Lauder. Because of this, the founding year carries two readings. The company and Wikipedia both date the brand to 1985, the year the fashion house was established [1]; the fragrance line proper is generally traced to its first launch in 1995 [4]. Both dates are accurate for different things: 1985 for the house, 1993 and 1995 for the perfume business.

History and milestones

The first Tommy Hilfiger scent, the men's eau de toilette simply called Tommy, debuted in February 1995 across 650 department-store counters, with a further 150 locations added months later. It outperformed expectations sharply: projected at $25 million in first-year U.S. retail sales, it reached $65 million [4]. A women's counterpart, Tommy Girl, followed in September 1996 and stayed on the market alongside it.

The line drew further attention in 2004 with True Star, a fragrance fronted by Beyoncé [3]. By 2010, according to WWD, the wider Tommy Hilfiger beauty range was sold in 120 countries and generated roughly $200 million a year in global retail sales under Estée Lauder's Aramis and Designer Fragrances division [4].

Ownership

The Tommy Hilfiger brand is owned by PVH Corp, formerly Phillips-Van Heusen, which acquired it from Apax Partners for $3 billion in March 2010 [3]. The fragrances, however, are made and distributed under license rather than by PVH directly.

For nearly three decades that licensee was Estée Lauder. In 2022 the arrangement changed: as Lauder wound down its Aramis and Designer Fragrances division, the Tommy Hilfiger beauty and fragrance business moved to Give Back Beauty, with the Estée Lauder contract closing in June 2023 [5]. Give Back Beauty describes its Prestige and Lifestyle division as a beauty licensee handling creation, production, marketing and global distribution for lifestyle brands. The new licensee's stated scope reaches well beyond scent; the company's brand officer said "no category off limits," pointing to body, hair, wellness, cosmetics and home fragrance as areas to develop.

Philosophy and positioning

The company positions the line around classic American style with a modern twist, describing the collection as curated for the modern gentleman, with fresh top notes and warm base notes [2]. It sits in the prestige designer-fragrance tier and was, from the outset, a department-store product.

Products and innovation

The line's anchors remain its two earliest scents, Tommy and Tommy Girl, both still marketed. Under Give Back Beauty the brand has, in its own words, reinvigorated these classics while building the more recent Impact line, which spans Impact, Impact Intense and Impact Parfum [1]. True Star and the men's colognes round out a catalogue focused on eau de toilettes and colognes.

Recognition

The original Tommy fragrance was named Men's Fragrance of the Year at the 1997 FiFi Awards [3].

Current status

The brand is active. Its fragrances are sold through a live storefront with current listings, and the line is being commercialized and expanded by Give Back Beauty, which began developing new products from early 2023 [5]. Distribution remains global.
