Summary

Overview

Uppercut Deluxe is an Australian men's grooming brand founded in 2009 by childhood friends Luke Newman and Steve Purcell, both working barbers [8]. Drawing on the look and rituals of the 1950s barbershop, the company built its range around hair styling, shaving and beard care, with its Deluxe Pomade as the founding product. The brand remains active, running a multi-region e-commerce operation and stating that its products reach more than 50 countries.

The 1950s recur throughout the brand's story, but as inspiration rather than history: Uppercut Deluxe takes its name and mascot from Willy "Uppercut" O'Shea, a Depression-era boxer and Newman's grandfather [6]. Some retailer listings describe the brand as "created around the 1950s"; this refers to that inspiration era, not a founding date, and the company itself dates its start to 2009 [8][10].

Origin & founders

Uppercut Deluxe grew out of a working barbershop. According to the brand, Newman and Purcell were dissatisfied with the grooming products they were buying for their shop, so they set out to make their own [7]. After roughly a year of development alongside chemists, testing hundreds of formulas, they released their first product, the Deluxe Pomade [7].

The two founders came to the trade by different routes. The company says Newman discovered barbering while in Portland, Oregon, watching a traditional shop that built community around it, before returning to Australia to apprentice. Purcell, described on the brand's about page as a barber of 23 years, traces his interest to childhood visits to his grandfather's barbershop [1]. An earlier 2013 interview put Purcell's experience at 13 years, consistent with the same career told roughly a decade apart [6].

The brand's name and guiding phrase both come from Newman's grandfather, the boxer Willy O'Shea, whose saying — "a hard beginning maketh a good ending" — the founders adopted as a motto [6].

Philosophy & positioning

Uppercut Deluxe positions itself as a practical, barber-led alternative to salon lines, offering what the company calls "high quality grooming products for men without all the fancy embellishments of salon brands." Product ideas, the brand says, originate in the barbershop and the bathroom rather than a boardroom: "Ideas for new products start where the products get used... We never let ideas from the boardroom influence our product range." New formulas are developed with chemists based near the company's Australian base and tested in barbershops before wider release.

Products & innovation

The range spans hair styling — pomade, powder, paste, clay, cream and salt spray — alongside hair and body wash, shaving products, beard oil and balm, and brushes, combs and other tools. The Deluxe Pomade remains the brand's central product; the company describes it as having "earned itself a cult following" and, for more than 15 years, the most popular item in its range [9]. A lighter styling paste, Featherweight, is positioned for volume and lift.

Current status

Uppercut Deluxe is active. It operates a live e-commerce presence with regional storefronts for Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, plus a separate wholesale channel for barbers, and maintains active social accounts. The brand states its products are sold in more than 50 countries [5]. It appears to be independently owned; no parent company or acquisition is recorded.
