Overview
Apobase is a Nordic pharmacy skincare brand built around base creams — fragrance-free, colorant-free moisturisers sold without any pharmaceutical actives. Its range is positioned for everyday care of dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin, and is marketed for the whole family from the age of three. The brand is sold through pharmacies and grocery stores in Norway and Finland, where it runs dedicated localised websites, and is owned by the Stockholm-based group Karo Healthcare AB.
The brand is active. It pre-dates its current owner by some years, but its exact origin is not disclosed: no founding year, founder or country of origin appears in Apobase's own materials or in those of its parent company.
Origin
Apobase's beginnings are undocumented in the available sources. The brand existed before Karo took it on in 2019, when it was still part of Teva Pharmaceuticals' over-the-counter portfolio [6], but no founding year, founder or home country is stated on the brand sites or in Karo's corporate materials. The name itself reflects the brand's pharmacy roots — a "base cream" being, in the company's words, a cream made in a pharmaceutical factory that contains no pharmaceutical ingredients. Some retailers and ingredient databases list the brand as "Apo Base" in two words, while the brand's own sites write it as one [10].
Ownership
Apobase belongs to Karo Healthcare AB, a Swedish specialist skin-health company headquartered in Stockholm. Karo first began distributing and marketing the brand in 2019 under a seven-year licence agreement, then acquired it outright in 2021. The purchase was part of a larger deal in which Karo bought a European over-the-counter portfolio from Teva Pharmaceuticals for 84 million euros, a transaction announced in February 2021 and expected to close that April [6]. Alongside Apobase, that portfolio included the sister brands Flux, Decubal, Lactocare, Dailycare and Fludent [6]. Karo Healthcare is itself owned by the Swedish private-equity firm EQT, which acquired it in 2019 [7]. In Finland, distribution is handled through a local subsidiary, Karo Healthcare Oy, based in Turku.
Philosophy & positioning
The brand's pitch rests on simplicity and tolerance. Apobase describes its creams as suitable for daily moisturising and cleansing across all skin types, with an emphasis on dry, sensitive and irritation-prone skin; every product in the range is free of both fragrance and colorants. Base creams are presented as the foundation of atopic-skin care rather than as treatments in themselves — the company notes that moisturisers form the primary management of mild atopic dermatitis, with the urea-based Apobase Carbamide 5% singled out for that use. The brand's parent describes the products as dermatologist-recommended care for dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin [5]. Norwegian marketing carries the tagline "Kvalitet som funker" (quality that works); the Finnish site uses "Laatua ihosi iloksi."
Products
The core lineup is a set of base creams graded by richness, from the medium-fat Apobase Cream to the high-fat Apobase Oily Cream for very dry skin, plus the urea-containing Apobase Carbamide for intensive moisturising. Around these sit a hand cream, a face cream and a cleansing gel; the Finnish market also carries an Apobase Lotion not listed on the Norwegian site. Named hero ingredients include urea (carbamide) and glycerol in the Carbamide variant, while the ingredient list for the brand's lotion is built on familiar emollients such as liquid paraffin and petrolatum. In Finland, larger refill packs of Apobase Creme are reimbursable through KELA, the national health insurance scheme, for the treatment of long-term skin diseases — a sign of the brand's medical-grade positioning there [9].
Ethics
Apobase's Norwegian FAQ states that all of its creams are vegan and fragrance-free, and that the products are not tested on animals [3]. The vegan claim is corroborated by third-party listings: the Finnish pharmacy retailer Apteekki 360 likewise describes the range as fragrance-free, colorant-free and vegan [8]. Beyond these statements, the brand publishes no formal certifications, and no manufacturing locations or wider sustainability commitments are disclosed in the available sources.
Current status
Apobase is an active, currently maintained brand. It operates dedicated Norwegian and Finnish websites, holds broad pharmacy and grocery distribution across both countries, and retains reimbursed status in Finland — all consistent with a brand that is owned and actively marketed by Karo Healthcare following the 2021 acquisition.
