Overview
Astrid is a Czech cosmetics brand founded in 1847 in Prague and active today in skincare, body care, sun protection and men's grooming [1]. Built around its long Czech heritage, the brand is best known in its home market for sun care, foot care and lip care. Since 2014 it has been owned by the Greek personal-care company Sarantis Group, which acquired the trademarks and the manufacturing operation outright [8].
The company traces its line back more than 175 years, presenting itself as one of the oldest cosmetics houses in Central Europe. It continues to trade under its own name as a sub-brand within the larger Sarantis portfolio.
Origin & founders
According to the brand's history page, Astrid began in 1847 when František Prochaska, a young entrepreneur from the area around Český Brod, opened his first soap shop on Celetná Street in Prague, initially selling bath soaps [1]. (The founder's name appears with diacritics as František Procháska in some Czech-language sources [6]; the brand's own English pages use the spelling "Prochaska.")
In the 1850s Prochaska built his own manufacturing plant and began producing Astrid cosmetics, working with French essence makers and Parisian perfumers. The company describes itself as the first historically certified cosmetics firm in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a claim echoed by the Czech Quality Council's government portal, which credits Prochaska with creating the first cosmetic firm in all of Austria-Hungary. After the 1848 revolution disrupted business in central Prague, the operation later moved to the city's Holešovice district.
The founding year is well corroborated across the brand site and Czech editorial sources, though one M&A database lists 1874 — likely a transposition error — rather than 1847 [10].
History & milestones
The Astrid trademark itself was registered in 1935, with the name said to derive from the Latin astra, meaning star. In 1947 the company marked its centennial under the motto "Tradition, Quality, Beauty."
During the 20th century Astrid became a substantial contract manufacturer. In the 1960s it produced Nivea creme and skin lotion for Beiersdorf and Taft hairspray for Schwarzkopf, and it made lipsticks for Dior — described on the brand's history page as the only non-French company the Paris house entrusted with that work [1]. Czech editorial accounts add colognes and soaps produced for 4711 during the same period.
The brand's ownership followed Czechoslovakia's political history: nationalized after the Second World War and privatized in 1992. In 2014 it passed to foreign ownership for the first time when the Sarantis Group bought it.
Ownership
In 2014 the Greek personal-care company Sarantis Group (Gr. Sarantis S.A.) acquired Astrid for roughly 6.5 million euros, reported in the Czech press as about 178 million Czech koruna [7]. The deal made Sarantis the full owner of the ASTRID trademark along with the SAHARA, PEO, ADAM, DIPLOMAT and ASTRID BATOLE marks, as well as the production facility itself [8]. It was Sarantis's first acquisition in the Czech Republic.
Within the Sarantis portfolio, Astrid sits alongside sister brands including Carroten, B.U., STR8 and Algologie. The company contributes to the group's position in the sun-care category, where Sarantis also owns the Carroten line.
The brand's former factory in Holešovice has since been retired from production. The site is being redeveloped into a residential project called "Astrid Garden," with office space acquired by Portiva in December 2021 and construction completion reported as expected in 2024 [9].
Philosophy & positioning
Astrid frames itself as a long-heritage Czech house with a consistent purpose. The company says that "for more than 150 years" it has dedicated itself to creating safe and effective products for healthy skin, built on what it describes as effective combinations of advanced cosmetic ingredients. Its stated values are tradition, quality and beauty, summarised in the tagline "Always caring!"
Positioned at the mass-market tier, the brand reports leading market positions at home in lip care, sun protection and foot care.
Products & innovation
Astrid's range spans face care, body care, sun care and men's care, organised into collections such as Bioretinol, Vitamin C, Hyaluron 3D, Q10 Miracle and Collagen Pro. Recurring hero ingredients include a carotenoids complex, bioretinol, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, coenzyme Q10 and collagen.
Sun protection is a particular focus. The ASTRID SUN line — alongside the SAHARA sub-brand — covers protection milks, sprays, face creams, after-sun and self-tan products across low to high SPF ranges. The company states that all ASTRID SUN products are water resistant and dermatologically tested, and markets what it calls an innovative sun technology offering broad-spectrum protection against UV, infrared radiation and visible light.
One product predates the modern range: Jelení lůj, a deer-tallow cream that originated at Astrid and, according to the Czech Quality Council portal, is still presented as the "original and only" version [6].
Recognition
Astrid has been profiled by the Czech Quality Council's government portal as part of the country's cosmetics heritage, which describes the brand as a piece of cosmetic history [6]. Its 2014 acquisition drew coverage in the Czech business press, including E15 and CzechCrunch.
Current status
Astrid remains an active brand under Sarantis Group ownership, the status reflected in its acquired classification. Its website carries current sun-care and face-care lines, and its core markets are the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with wider distribution through the Sarantis network. Production at the historic Holešovice site has ended, with manufacturing continuing within the parent group.
