Overview
BMW is a licensed fragrance line that extends the German automotive brand into perfumery. It is not a standalone beauty house: the scents are developed, produced and distributed under a global licensing agreement signed in September 2023 between Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and the Venetian perfume company Mavive S.p.A. [2] The first collection reached the market later that year, making the line one of several 2020s car-brand fragrance ventures.
Sources differ on where the brand "belongs." The line carries the name of BMW, the German carmaker headquartered in Munich, which holds the licence and lends its identity to the products. The fragrances themselves are made in Italy by Mavive, a Venice-based perfumery established in 1986 and still run by the third and fourth generations of the Vidal family. [2] In Glowpedia's record the brand country is registered as Germany (the licensor whose name appears on the bottle), with Italy noted as the manufacturing and licensee location rather than the brand's home.
Origin and licensing
The fragrance project began with a formal licensing deal rather than a founder. On 19 September 2023, Mavive announced a global agreement with BMW covering the worldwide development, production and distribution of the brand's first-ever scents. [2] According to the trade press, the launch collection followed roughly two years of collaboration. [6] Stefan Karch, Global Head of BMW Lifestyle, described "creating a Freude Moment" as the backbone of the line's positioning [2] — a reference to Freude, the German word for joy that BMW treats as a core brand value.
Retail of the fragrances runs through dedicated channels: orders placed via the BMW Lifestyle shop, operated by stichd sportmerchandising B.V., are handled through Mavive's webshop, which the brand site describes as the partner managing the full order process. [1] The line is also sold through select international retailers, placing it in the prestige segment of the fragrance market.
Products
The debut collection comprised two genderless eau de parfum scents, Bergamood and Amberness, presented at the TFWA tax-free exhibition in Cannes in October 2023. [2] BMW characterises Bergamood as a "bright, uplifting blend" and Amberness as offering "tranquility and beauty" with what the brand calls a "warm cashmere hug" sensation. [1] Both were created by the perfumers Frank Voelkl and Alexandra Monet.
In October 2025 the line expanded with the BMW M Fragrance Collection, three eau de toilettes tied to milestones in BMW's M motorsport division. [5] Each bottle references one stripe of the BMW M logo: the light-blue 1972, inspired by the 3.0 CSL described by the company as the division's first sports car; the blue 1985, a tribute to the M3 E30; and the red 2025, built around the seventh-generation M5. The trio was created by Voelkl and Monet in collaboration with the fragrance house DSM Firmenich. [3] Mavive states the scents use a proprietary "EMOTIWAVES" technology, described as a neuroscience-based approach intended to "positively influence mood and psychological well-being." [3]
Philosophy and positioning
The line is built around BMW's stated value of Freude, or joy, and the tagline "Freude forever," which the company frames as an emphasis on emotional connection and memorable moments. [2] The BMW M collection in particular is positioned to translate the division's automotive identity — performance, precision and innovation — into scent. The 2025 launch was tied to BMW M's "Gen M" marketing campaign, presented as a way to extend the brand into lifestyle products around the values of performance, innovation and culture. [5]
Current status
The fragrance line is active. It operates under the global licensing agreement signed in 2023, and its most recent release, the BMW M trio, launched on 30 October 2025 and remains listed for sale through the BMW Lifestyle shop and Mavive. [5] The licence covers worldwide development, production and distribution, giving the line a global scope.
