Summary

Overview

Spezieria di San Marco is an Italian fragrance brand based in Venice (Dese) and owned by the Venetian perfume house Mavive S.p.A. It was created as a modern brand in collaboration with the Fondazione Museo della Scuola Grande di San Marco, with its first fragrance appearing in 2024 and a wider collection and press launch following in early 2025 [6]. The brand draws its name and imagery from the historical Venetian apothecary tradition, reinterpreting that heritage in a range of colognes, eaux de parfum and body products.

Although the name evokes a centuries-old institution, the brand itself is recent. Mavive describes it as a new venture; Italian business and trade press covered its arrival in January 2025 [6].

Origin & founders

The brand was conceived by Mavive S.p.A. together with the Fondazione Museo della Scuola Grande di San Marco, a partnership the parent company frames as "reviving and celebrating the ancient tradition of Venetian apothecaries" [4]. Rather than crediting an individual founder, sources present it as a corporate creation. The fragrances were developed with perfumers Alessandro Olmo and Jordi Fernández, the latter credited as the nose behind the 2025 Eau de Parfum Caviar Lime.

The concept reaches back to Venice's spezierie — the workshop-boutiques the brand describes as places "where botanists and alchemists transformed herbs, essences and natural materials into remedies, elixirs and refined preparations." Spezieria di San Marco positions itself, in its own words, as "the guardian of an ancient and precious art: the art of the apothecary."

Founding year and heritage framing

The founding date carries a documented ambiguity. Fragrantica records the earliest edition as created in 2024, with the modern brand marketed by Mavive and its press launch dated to January 2025 [7]. The brand's own heritage page instead foregrounds 1437 — the year the Scuola Grande di San Marco was established as a Venetian institution [2]. That 1437 date refers to the historical school, not to the modern perfume brand: Il Sole 24 Ore describes the launch with the verb nasce ("is born") and explicitly frames "Venezia 1437" as "the year the Scuola Grande di San Marco was established," not a founding year for the company [6]. The number also appears as an inscription on the flagship bottle. On this basis the modern brand is treated as a 2024/2025 creation, with 1437 recorded as heritage.

A second heritage reference is the "Aqua Mirabilis," a fragrant water the brand dates to 1600 and cites as a forerunner of Eau de Cologne, used as the olfactory inspiration for its flagship.

Ownership

Spezieria di San Marco is owned by Mavive S.p.A., headquartered in Dese, Venice [4]. Mavive grew out of the family business Vidal Profumi and, according to trade coverage, reflects the Vidal family's roughly 120 years in perfumery; the company name is an acronym derived from Massimo Vidal Venezia [10]. Mavive states that it operates in more than 90 countries, and its portfolio includes the selective house The Merchant of Venice alongside brands such as Pino Silvestre, Monotheme and Alps.

Products & innovation

The line centres on citrus-forward fragrance. The flagship is Venezia 1437, an Eau de Cologne the brand connects to the Aqua Mirabilis tradition [8]. A 2025 Eau de Parfum collection followed, comprising Caviar Lime, Black Lemon, Triple Bergamot Extract and Velvet Neroli. Body products — hand creams and a bath line including a shower gel — round out the range.

Ingredient sourcing leans on the Mediterranean, with what the brand calls a "special focus" on regional raw materials. Bergamot is drawn from Calabria, described on the raw-materials page as "the cradle of the most delicious citrus treasures," alongside Italian lemon, Brazilian sweet orange, Paraguayan petitgrain and Egyptian basil oil. The brand highlights a "Black Lemon Accord," which it characterises as "an innovative and unique note in the perfumery world," and a Triple Bergamot Extract combining three bergamot variations. Citrus oils are described as extracted by cold expression using "the typical Italian peeler technique."

On sustainability, Mavive states that "all the resources used in the creation of these fragrances are natural, pure, and traceable," and that upcycling is used to reduce waste [4]. No formal certifications are listed in the available sources.

Recognition & press

Coverage to date has centred on the launch. Il Sole 24 Ore reported the debut in January 2025 [6], the trade outlet FashionNetwork noted that Mavive had launched the brand and was preparing a perfume exhibition [10], and the beauty title Beautytudine published an editorial the same month describing it as "a return to origins, a tribute to knowledge that marked Venice's history" [5].

Current status

The brand is active. Its e-commerce site is live, its Eau de Parfum collection was released in 2025, and recent trade and editorial press date from that year. As a 2024/2025 launch backed by an established parent company operating in more than 90 countries, it is a recent entrant rather than a dormant or defunct name.
