Overview
Bulldog is a British men's grooming and skincare brand built around natural-origin ingredients and a straightforward, affordable positioning. Founded in London by Simon Duffy and Rhodri Ferrier, it grew through the 2010s into one of the UK's leading men's facial-care names before being acquired by the American company Edgewell Personal Care in 2016 [5]. It continues to operate as a standalone Edgewell brand, with a current product range and an active business.
The company markets itself under the tagline "Man's Best Friend" and frames its purpose simply: products made specifically for men rather than, in the founders' words, "your girlfriend's brand rebadged" [7]. Its ranges span facial skincare, body and shower products, shaving, and beard care.
Origin & founders
Bulldog began with a gap that one of its founders could not fill on a shop shelf. Simon Duffy, a former Saatchi & Saatchi marketer, struggled to find a natural men's moisturiser and, with business partner Rhodri Ferrier, set out to research the market and build a brand to address it. The pair quit their jobs in 2006 and spent roughly a year and a half formulating products, developing the brand, and meeting retailers before bringing it to market [7].
The company's founding date is recorded differently across sources. Edgewell's official acquisition release gives the founding year as 2006 [5], and trade coverage describes the brand as "launched ten years ago" relative to that 2016 announcement, also pointing to 2006 [6]. Editorial profiling of the founders instead dates the launch to 2007, the year they raised £1.2 million in angel investment and put the first products on sale [7]. The distinction reflects the gap between forming the company and reaching the market; this article follows the 2006 founding year cited by the parent company while noting the 2007 product launch.
From the outset the brand positioned itself as natural and made specifically for men, an approach captured in the founders' description of products "created for men, by men." The company has offices in West London.
Ownership
Edgewell Personal Care acquired Bulldog on 1 November 2016; the financial terms were not disclosed [5][6]. At the time of the deal, Bulldog's products were sold in more than 17,000 locations across 14 markets, with the UK, US, Sweden and South Korea cited as its largest [6]. Edgewell described the brand as "a natural fit" for expanding its personal-care portfolio in a growing global category [5].
Bulldog sits alongside other Edgewell personal-care and grooming names, including the shaving brands Wilkinson Sword and Personna, the sun-care brands Hawaiian Tropic and Banana Boat, and the men's grooming line Cremo. Despite the acquisition, Bulldog has continued to operate as a distinct brand with its own product development and identity.
Philosophy & positioning
Bulldog's stated aim is to make quality men's products that, as the company puts it, "unlock the true potential of natural origin ingredients." It pairs those naturally derived ingredients with selected man-made ones to deliver, in its description, strong performance at an affordable price. The long-standing company goal, repeated by Duffy at the time of the Edgewell deal, is "to put a Bulldog product in every bathroom" [5].
The brand's identity is deliberately plain-spoken and male-focused, sold under the "Man's Best Friend" tagline and organised into simple, purpose-built ranges rather than an elaborate regimen.
Products & innovation
Bulldog's catalogue covers facial skincare grouped by skin type and concern, alongside body washes, deodorants, shaving products, and beard care. Its Original range is built around aloe vera as a hero ingredient, and the Original Bamboo Razor is among its signature products, using bamboo the company sources from the mountains near Fujian, China.
For its moisturisers and other emulsions, the brand uses a manufacturing method it calls "Single-Vessel Quenching," which it presents as a more energy-efficient process. Most products are made in the UK, in what the company describes as factories run by people it knows and trusts.
Ethics & sustainability
Bulldog presents itself as a cruelty-free and vegan brand. All of its products are certified by Cruelty Free International under the Leaping Bunny programme, and the company states it uses no animal-derived ingredients and works only with suppliers that meet its animal-testing policy. It also describes all of its products as suitable for vegans and vegetarians, gluten-free, and free of microbeads and microplastics.
Sustainability is positioned as central to the brand rather than, in its phrasing, "an afterthought." In 2017 it introduced sugarcane-based plastic into its tubes for the first time, sourcing the sugar cane from what it calls certified ethical origins grown away from the protected Amazon rainforest area. The brand also runs a First Mile recycling scheme for its plant-based tubes.
Recognition
Bulldog drew industry and press recognition during its growth in the late 2000s and 2010s. It won Cosmopolitan's award for Best Men's Face Cream in 2010 and a Men's Health USA Grooming Award in 2013. In 2012 the brand overtook Gillette to become the UK's third-largest men's facial-care brand [7]. When Edgewell announced the acquisition in 2016, founders Simon Duffy and Rhodri Ferrier were appointed MBE for their services in the Queen's 90th Birthday Honours.
Current status
Bulldog has been owned by Edgewell Personal Care since 2016 [5] and continues to trade as an active, standalone brand. It maintains a current website and product ranges, ongoing sustainability initiatives, and a sports partnership with IRONMAN, and it remains distributed across multiple international markets with a notable presence in the Nordics, where Sweden ranks among its largest markets [6].
