Summary

Overview

Clear Start is the teen and younger-skin acne line of Dermalogica, an American professional skincare company founded in 1986 [5]. Rather than a standalone brand, it is a targeted collection within Dermalogica's wider range, built for breakout-prone, oily and congested skin. The parent company has been owned by the consumer-goods group Unilever since 2015 [5], so while Clear Start remains an actively sold line, it sits inside a corporate structure several steps removed from its independent origins.

Dermalogica grew out of the professional skin-therapy world, and Clear Start carries that positioning into a younger, acne-focused segment. The line is sold internationally through Dermalogica, which distributes in more than 80 countries.

Origin and parent brand

Dermalogica was founded in 1986 by Jane Wurwand, a skin therapist, together with Ray Wurwand [5]. Wurwand had immigrated to the United States from Edinburgh in the 1980s and, according to a Glossy profile, was inspired by European skincare practices and set out to change an American market where professional esthetician visits and multi-step routines were largely unfamiliar [6]. She aimed to close what she described as the gap between the few hundred hours of esthetician training then standard in the U.S. and the two-year apprenticeships common in Europe.

That education-first approach shaped the parent company. Dermalogica describes itself as a professional-grade brand used by skin therapists across more than 100 countries, and frames its mission as empowering "every skin therapist to bring out the best in your skin." Its training arm, the International Dermal Institute, runs postgraduate centres that the company says train tens of thousands of skin therapists each year and also handle product research and development. The brand says it has pioneered approaches such as the double cleanse, and that newer product categories like serums and boosters initially met years of skepticism [6].

Clear Start applies this background specifically to acne. Dermalogica positions it for people with oily, acne-prone or congested skin, including teens and young adults, while noting that it "targets skin concerns rather than age" and so also serves adults with persistent breakouts.

Ownership

Dermalogica, and with it the Clear Start line, was acquired by Unilever on 1 August 2015 [5]. The Glossy profile notes the purchase was for an undisclosed amount [6]. Under Unilever, Dermalogica sits alongside other skincare and personal-care names in the group's portfolio, including Murad, Dove, Vaseline and St. Ives.

The brand's headquarters location is recorded inconsistently across sources. Wikipedia lists the company as headquartered in Carson, California [5], while a separate scope note places it in El Segundo, California; both are in the Los Angeles area, and the discrepancy is noted here for transparency.

Products and positioning

Clear Start follows a three-step "cleanse, treat, hydrate" structure aimed at clearing and preventing breakouts without over-drying the skin. The company markets it under the tagline "Breakouts are cancelled," and describes the line as targeting breakouts, blackheads and oily shine. On the teen-acne side, Dermalogica frames the products as addressing the bacteria, clogged pores and inflammation linked to the hormonal changes of puberty.

The collection's hero ingredients include salicylic acid, tea tree oil, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid [4]. Signature products span cleansers, masks, boosters and sun protection, among them the Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash, the Breakout Clearing Booster, the Blackhead Clearing Fizz Mask, Clearing Defense SPF30 and the Post-Breakout Fix. As a professional-grade range, Dermalogica is sold through a mix of retail partners such as Ulta and Sephora and independent salons [6].

Sustainability

Dermalogica's value claims apply across its range, including Clear Start. The company says its products are vegan and gluten-free, and states it has been recognised as cruelty-free by PETA and Leaping Bunny [3]. It also points to what it calls a "clean list" maintained since 1986, excluding ingredients such as artificial colours and fragrances, mineral oil, lanolin, parabens and microplastics [3].

On packaging, the brand highlights moves toward recyclable and recycled materials: a single-material recyclable cleanser pump with a bottle made from 70% recycled plastic, droppers and bottles using high proportions of post-consumer recycled content, and refill pouches it says use far less plastic than standard retail bottles [3]. Dermalogica also reports switching more than 70 products from a petroleum-based to a plant-based form of butylene glycol, and using FSC-certified cartons.

Recognition

In 2011, The Sunday Times published a feature on Dermalogica headlined "The Woman Who Started a Cult," referring to the brand's devoted following [5]. Founder Jane Wurwand responded that the company does "talk about Dermalogica like a tribe on a mission." The framing reflected a strongly engaged customer base rather than any substantive dispute.

Current status

Clear Start is an actively sold line, but as part of Dermalogica it has been a Unilever subsidiary since the 2015 acquisition. The parent brand continues to maintain a current product range and ongoing packaging and sustainability initiatives, with sustainability-related activity documented as recently as 2024.
