Unilever

Unilever traces its origins to the 1929 agreement to merge Lever Brothers, a soap manufacturer, with Margarine Unie, a Dutch margarine business. From these two consumer-staples parents the group grew into a global fast-moving consumer-goods company selling food, cleaning and personal-care products across many markets.

Soap and personal hygiene were part of the business from the beginning, and over the following decades personal care became one of Unilever's core divisions. Much of its modern beauty presence, however, was assembled through acquisition rather than internal launch, as the group added skincare, hair-care and grooming brands to complement long-standing names it had built or held for many years.

Unilever's beauty and personal-care portfolio is broad and layered. Its long-established mass-market brands include Dove, Axe (sold as Lynx in some markets), Lux, Sunsilk, Rexona, Clear and the petroleum-jelly brand Vaseline. In hair care it owns TRESemmé, Brylcreem and Sunsilk, and in men's grooming it holds Brut alongside Axe/Lynx.

Alongside these everyday brands, Unilever has built a prestige and "masstige" beauty stable. It owns the professional-skincare brand Dermalogica and its Clear Start line, the clinical-skincare brand Murad, and Paula's Choice. Its colour-cosmetics and prestige-skincare holdings include Hourglass, Kate Somerville, Tatcha, the French skincare brand Garancia, and TIGI Cosmetics, which it operates under licence. In hair care it owns Living Proof and the bond-repair brand K18. Its more recent, digitally native and naturals-focused additions include Shea Moisture, Schmidt's Naturals, the deodorant brand Wild, St. Ives and The INKEY List. Acquisition has been central to how Unilever assembled its beauty portfolio. In 1986 it acquired Chesebrough-Ponds Inc., bringing the Vaseline and Pond's skincare brands into the group [1]. In 2010 it purchased the American company Alberto-Culver for US$3.7 billion, adding the hair-care brands TRESemmé, Alberto VO5 and Nexxus along with St Ives and Simple [3].

The 2010s saw Unilever move deliberately into higher-priced and direct-to-consumer beauty. In 2016 it acquired the subscription grooming company Dollar Shave Club for a reported US$1 billion [1].
