Unilever

24 brands · founded 1930 · United Kingdom

Unilever is a British multinational consumer-goods company headquartered in London, England. It was formed in 1930 through the merger of the Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie and the British soap maker Lever Brothers [1], and today its business spans beauty, personal care, home care and nutrition. Within that broad portfolio sits one of the largest collections of beauty and personal-care brands in the world.

The group is publicly listed, trading on the London Stock Exchange, Euronext Amsterdam and, through American Depositary Receipts, the New York Stock Exchange [1]. For Glowpedia its significance is as an owner: mass-market names such as Dove, Vaseline and Rexona sit alongside a growing set of prestige skincare and hair-care labels that Unilever has bought over the past two decades.

History & milestones

Unilever traces its origins to the 1929 agreement to merge Lever Brothers, a soap manufacturer, with Margarine Unie, a Dutch margarine business. Wikidata records the company's inception as 2 September 1929, the date the merger agreement was signed [2], while Unilever and most narrative accounts date the founding to 1930, when the combined company began operating [1]. From these two consumer-staples parents the group grew into a global fast-moving consumer-goods company selling food, cleaning and personal-care products across many markets.

Soap and personal hygiene were part of the business from the beginning, and over the following decades personal care became one of Unilever's core divisions. Much of its modern beauty presence, however, was assembled through acquisition rather than internal launch, as the group added skincare, hair-care and grooming brands to complement long-standing names it had built or held for many years.

Portfolio & brands

Unilever's beauty and personal-care portfolio is broad and layered. Its long-established mass-market brands include Dove, Axe (sold as Lynx in some markets), Lux, Sunsilk, Rexona, Clear and the petroleum-jelly brand Vaseline. In hair care it owns TRESemmé, Brylcreem and Sunsilk, and in men's grooming it holds Brut alongside Axe/Lynx.

Alongside these everyday brands, Unilever has built a prestige and "masstige" beauty stable. It owns the professional-skincare brand Dermalogica and its Clear Start line, the clinical-skincare brand Murad, and Paula's Choice. Its colour-cosmetics and prestige-skincare holdings include Hourglass, Kate Somerville, Tatcha, the French skincare brand Garancia, and TIGI Cosmetics, which it operates under licence. In hair care it owns Living Proof and the bond-repair brand K18. Its more recent, digitally native and naturals-focused additions include Shea Moisture, Schmidt's Naturals, the deodorant brand Wild, St. Ives and The INKEY List. Not every brand carries a documented acquisition year in the packet, and only the brands listed here are attributed to Unilever.

Acquisitions & strategy

Acquisition has been central to how Unilever assembled its beauty portfolio. In 1986 it acquired Chesebrough-Ponds Inc., bringing the Vaseline and Pond's skincare brands into the group [1]. In 2010 it purchased the American company Alberto-Culver for US$3.7 billion, adding the hair-care brands TRESemmé, Alberto VO5 and Nexxus along with St Ives and Simple [3].

The 2010s saw Unilever move deliberately into higher-priced and direct-to-consumer beauty. In 2016 it acquired the subscription grooming company Dollar Shave Club for a reported US$1 billion [1]. In 2017 it bought a set of prestige-skincare brands including REN Skincare, Kate Somerville and Schmidt's Naturals [1]. Subsequent additions to the prestige and specialist end of the portfolio, recorded in the group's holdings, include Paula's Choice, Tatcha, Living Proof, The INKEY List and K18. Taken together, these deals extended Unilever's reach from mass-market staples into premium skincare, colour cosmetics and specialist hair care.

Ownership

Unilever is a public company. Its shares trade on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ULVR, on Euronext Amsterdam as UNA, and on the New York Stock Exchange as American Depositary Receipts under UL [1]. The company is headquartered at Unilever House in London [1].
