Summary

Overview

VO5 is a mass-market haircare and styling brand that traces its origins to Culver City, California, in the 1950s. According to the brand, it began as a collaboration between a chemist and a hairdresser who set out to create a conditioning hair product that could deliver salon-quality results at home. The line took its lasting shape after 1955, when Leonard H. Lavin bought the small Los Angeles firm that made it and built a company around the single brand [4].

Today VO5 remains an active brand, though its ownership is split by region. Outside the United States — including the UK, Europe and the Nordic markets — it belongs to the private-equity firm Yellow Wood Partners, which acquired it as part of Unilever's Elida Beauty unit in 2024 [5]. The US and Puerto Rico rights follow a separate ownership chain.

Origin and founders

The product that became VO5 was developed in Culver City for the film industry, intended to counter the drying effect of hot studio lighting on actors' hair. FundingUniverse describes it as "a unique water-free, five-oil formula," made at the request of motion picture studios [4]. The brand's own account frames its beginnings as the meeting of "science and style" — a chemist and a hairdresser working together.

The company behind the modern brand was founded in 1955, when Leonard H. Lavin borrowed $400,000 to buy the small Los Angeles beauty-supply firm that manufactured VO5. At the time the firm made more than 100 products, but VO5 accounted for the large majority of its sales. Lavin dropped the rest, moved operations to Chicago, and organised the new business — Alberto-Culver — around haircare, with his wife Bernice serving as secretary-treasurer [4].

The brand's founding date carries a caveat. Sources agree that Lavin's company-forming purchase took place in 1955, and that year is recorded here as the founding year [3][4]. The original VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing product is commonly said to predate the purchase, with the year 1947 often cited, but none of the sources reviewed stated that date directly, so it is treated as unverified.

History and milestones

Under Lavin, the brand grew quickly. Its first television commercial aired in Pennsylvania in 1955, and by 1958 Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing had become the leading product in its category [3]. Alberto-Culver went public in 1961 and used its expanding reach to introduce a hair spray and establish an international sales division; a shampoo line followed in 1962. Over the following decades the parent company built a broad portfolio of haircare names alongside VO5.

Ownership

VO5 has passed through several owners, and its recent history is complicated by a regional split.

In September 2010, Unilever acquired Alberto-Culver, the brand's parent, for US$3.7 billion [3]. The following year, antitrust regulators required Unilever to divest the US rights to VO5, which were sold to High Ridge Brands via the private-equity firm Brynwood Partners; Unilever retained the brand across the rest of the world [3][6]. The US license later moved again, passing to Italy's Sodalis Group in 2024 — a chain that applies only to the American market.

Outside the United States, VO5 stayed with Unilever until it was placed in the company's Elida Beauty unit and sold to Yellow Wood Partners. That transaction completed on June 6, 2024, and covers the UK, Europe and the Nordic markets [5][7]. For those regions, Yellow Wood Partners is the current owner.

Philosophy and positioning

VO5 positions itself as an everyday styling brand rather than a premium or specialist line. The company describes its mission as giving people "the tools to have a good hair day every day," and presents itself as a styling partner across a range of hair needs. Its stated values centre on expertise, everyday accessibility and confidence, summed up in the phrase "Rooted in Expertise, Made for Everyday." On its UK site the brand describes itself as the country's number one styling brand.

Products

VO5's earliest and defining product was Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing, the water-free, five-oil formula that gave the brand its name recognition [4]. The range later expanded into shampoos, hair sprays and treatments such as the Alberto VO5 Hot Oil treatment. The brand sits in the drugstore, mass-market price tier and centres on hair styling and conditioning.

Current status

VO5 is an active brand. Its most recent notable development was the 2024 transfer of its non-US business to Yellow Wood Partners, which treated the brand as a going concern, and its UK consumer site remains live with current styling-focused marketing [5]. Because ownership is divided between a US license holder and a separate rest-of-world owner, the brand operates across multiple regions under different corporate parents rather than a single global one.
