Summary

Overview

Lux is a global personal-care brand built around fragrant soap and bath products, owned by the British-Dutch consumer-goods company Unilever. It began in the United Kingdom as a Lever Brothers product and grew into one of the most widely distributed beauty-soap names in the world, marketed today in more than 100 countries. Lux is best remembered for tying its soap to film glamour, an advertising strategy it ran for decades under the line "the beauty soap of film stars."

The brand operates as part of Unilever's personal-care portfolio rather than as an independent house, having become a Unilever brand when Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form the company in 1929 [2]. It remains actively marketed, with new launches and ambassador appointments as recently as its 2024 centenary, though its strongest presence is now in South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Brazil and South Africa rather than on Western shelves.

Origin and founders

The Lux name traces back to Lever Brothers, the soap business that William Hesketh Lever — later the first Lord Leverhulme — began in England in 1884. In 1899 the company introduced a flaked soap first sold as "Sunlight Flakes," renaming it "Lux" in 1900; the word is Latin for "light," a nod to Lever's existing Sunlight brand and, by association, a suggestion of luxury. The Lux trademark was registered in the United States the same year.

For more than two decades Lux was a laundry product, sold for washing fine fabrics. According to the brand's own account, a turning point came in 1924, when a consumer contest revealed that women were using the flakes as toilet soap [5]. Lever Brothers responded by creating a soap bar, first named "Lux Toilet Form" and soon re-christened "Lux Toilet Soap."

The brand's founding date depends on which product is counted. Unilever dates the beauty brand to 1924, stating it has served women "since 1924," and treats that year as the centenary it marked in 2024 [1]. Wikipedia and several histories give 1899 [2], but that earlier date refers to the original Sunlight Flakes laundry product rather than the beauty soap; the perfumed Lux bar reached the United States in 1925.

History and milestones

After the toilet-soap bar appeared, Lux became closely identified with celebrity advertising. In 1928 the J. Walter Thompson agency sent cases of Lux to 425 Hollywood actresses and received 414 endorsements, which the brand turned into its claim that nine out of ten stars used Lux [2]. The Museum of Brands credits the resulting "9 out of 10 stars use LUX" slogan with pioneering the modern practice of celebrity product endorsement [5]. A 1929 global campaign featured 26 leading female film stars, and the brand entered India the same year.

Lux carried the film-star association through the mid-twentieth century, with campaigns fronted over the decades by performers including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn, and a long line of Indian actresses from Leela Chitnis and Madhubala to Madhuri Dixit and Priyanka Chopra. In the 1990s the brand's sales declined as its advertising moved away from Hollywood starlets toward everyday women; Lux was withdrawn from some markets as Unilever shifted attention to Dove [2].

In 2024 Lux marked its 100-year centenary. The brand appointed Suhana Khan as ambassador for its body-wash range and reported a presence in more than 100 countries [6].

Ownership

Lux is owned by Unilever and sits within the company's personal-care division. It became part of Unilever in 1929, when Lever Brothers combined with the Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie [2]. Production today is handled through regional Unilever operations, including Hindustan Unilever, Unilever Sri Lanka and Unilever Pakistan. Within Unilever, Lux shares the portfolio with other personal-care brands such as Dove, Vaseline, Rexona and TRESemmé.

Philosophy and positioning

From the start Lux was positioned as accessible glamour. Early US marketing presented it as a white bar in pastel packaging, made to compare with finer French soaps but more affordable — a stance later summed up in trade accounts as "a luxury soap that everyone can afford." The company centres the brand on fine fragrance, saying its bath and body products pair scents "crafted by the world's best perfumers" with skin-loving formulas [1].

In its current messaging Unilever frames Lux around femininity, self-care and what it calls modern glamour, describing the brand's purpose as empowering women "to find strength in their beauty and rise above the judgements they face" [1].

Products and innovation

The brand's core categories are bath and body: beauty soap bars, shower gels, bath products and body wash. Shampoos and conditioners appear in some Asian markets, but the brand frames itself globally around bath and body rather than haircare. A representative product is the Magical Orchid shower gel, launched in 2014 and relaunched in 2024; for the relaunch the company promoted a 30-hour long-lasting fragrance and described the scent as scientifically proven to boost confidence [8].

Current status

Lux is an active brand operating under Unilever rather than as an independent company. Its most recent visible activity dates to 2024, including the centenary, the Suhana Khan ambassador appointment and the Magical Orchid relaunch. The brand is marketed primarily in South Asia — India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal — as well as Malaysia, Brazil, Japan, Thailand, the Middle East and South Africa [2], having receded from some Western markets in the 1990s.
