Summary

Overview

Paula's Choice is an American skincare company founded in Seattle in 1995 by Paula Begoun, a former beauty journalist and author known as "The Cosmetics Cop" [4][5]. The brand built its identity on formulas the company says are grounded in published, peer-reviewed research rather than marketing claims, and it sold directly to customers online from the start. Since August 2021 it has been owned by Unilever, which acquired it from two private-equity firms; the brand continues to operate as a global, digital-led part of Unilever's skincare portfolio [9].

Begoun had spent years as an investigative beauty reporter and author before launching the line. According to Wikipedia, she opened her own cosmetics stores in Seattle in 1981, worked as a consumer reporter for the local television station KIRO-TV, and self-published early books critical of the cosmetics industry. That background shaped a brand positioned around ingredient scrutiny and skepticism toward beauty-counter marketing.

Origin and founders

In the early 1990s, Begoun began working with a team of cosmetic chemists to develop her own line of skin-care and cosmetic products, and in 1995 she started selling them online [5]. The direct-to-consumer route was deliberate. In a later interview she said the online model let her avoid the demands of traditional retail: "I didn't have to educate and deal with inventory, trying to get into hundreds or thousands of doors."

Begoun described the company's guiding idea in plain terms: "The fundamental concept of Paula's Choice... is don't do to anybody else what you don't want them to do to you" [6]. The brand's own tagline, "Smart, Safe Skin Care Since 1995," reflects the same research-first framing.

Ownership

Paula's Choice passed through several owners before reaching Unilever. In 2012, Bertram Capital took a stake in the company and Begoun became a minority shareholder — a shift she summed up as "the buck didn't stop with me" [6]. The business later moved to the private-equity firm TA Associates, a transaction in which, by her account, she was not involved.

In June 2021 Unilever signed an agreement to acquire Paula's Choice from TA Associates Management, L.P. and Bertram Capital Management, LLC, and completed the purchase on 3 August 2021 [9]. Unilever described Paula's Choice as "a leading digital-led skin care brand" and said the business was expected to generate more than $300 million in net sales for 2021.

Unilever did not officially disclose the price; its announcement stated that terms of the deal were not disclosed [9]. Trade press, including WWD and Beauty Independent, reported the acquisition at around $2 billion, but that figure is a reported valuation rather than an official disclosure [6]. Begoun described her reaction to the sale simply: "I sobbed... my heart burst."

The brand's sister brands within Unilever include Dove, Vaseline, TRESemmé, St. Ives, Dermalogica and Murad, among others.

Philosophy and positioning

Paula's Choice presents itself as a research-led brand. Begoun has said her aim was straightforward: "I was just making skincare products with the best ingredients and the best formularies that research showed worked." Wikipedia notes that she claims her products offer results based on published, peer-reviewed research.

That evidence-first stance has extended into public criticism of the "clean beauty" movement. Begoun has been openly dismissive of natural-only skincare claims, calling them "so bullshit" and arguing that "the best skincare can't be done all naturally" [6]. The brand's audience skews toward ingredient-conscious, evidence-focused shoppers, a group sometimes called "skintellectuals," with reach extending to a younger social-media following.

Products and innovation

The brand's best-known product is the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, a chemical exfoliant built around salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid) and green tea extract. The company explains that BHA "works within the pore lining where congestion, blemishes and blackheads begin."

The exfoliant became a widely recognized product, particularly after going viral on TikTok. One feature reported that a bottle was "sold every minute" and described it as a "cult-favourite," noting a rating of about 4.2 stars from more than 3,400 customer reviews on the brand's website [8]. Begoun has called it a "miracle in a bottle." The product has also been publicly endorsed by the dermatologist and social-media creator Dr. Muneeb Shah.

On animal testing, the brand carries a cruelty-free listing from PETA, which states that Paula's Choice "is cruelty-free" and ensures that neither its ingredients nor finished products are tested on animals [7]. Independent cruelty-free trackers note a distinction at the corporate level: parent company Unilever is not classified as cruelty-free overall, since other Unilever brands may test where required by law [11]. This is a brand-level versus parent-level difference rather than a contradiction of the brand's own listing.

Controversies

Begoun has long carried what she herself calls a "controversial" reputation in the beauty industry, dating back to her first book in 1984. "Being controversial is what they were attracted to," she said of investors, "and they called it being disrupting" [6]. The controversy is reputational and tied to her outspoken positioning — especially her rejection of clean-beauty marketing — rather than to regulatory action.

Current status

Paula's Choice remains an operating brand under Unilever ownership. Its last major corporate milestone was the completion of the Unilever acquisition on 3 August 2021 [9], after which it has continued to sell actively as a global, digital-led skincare brand, including across the Nordic markets.
