Overview
CRA-YON is a Franco-Swedish niche fragrance house based in Stockholm, founded in 2020 by the married couple Christine and Niclas Lydeen [1][2]. The same pair had earlier established the Swedish perfume house Agonist in 2008, and CRA-YON grew out of more than a decade of work in perfumery [3]. Where Agonist leaned toward artisanal, sculptural luxury, CRA-YON was conceived as something lighter and more inclusive: scent framed not as rarefied luxury but as an everyday tool for mood and self-expression. The house describes itself with the tagline "Une maison de parfums franco-suédoise" — a Franco-Swedish perfume house — and operates across more than 70 markets through its own online store and a network of department-store stockists.
The brand remains active. Its most recent public milestones include a January 2026 launch at Galeries Lafayette in Paris and a first prize at the Swedish Beauty Oscars the same year [4].
Origin & founders
Christine and Niclas Lydeen met in Sweden, where they discovered a shared fascination with fragrance, and went on to build two perfume houses together. Christine, who has French roots, trained at Studio Berçot in Paris and worked at the trend agencies of Li Edelkoort and Vivienne Westwood; according to the company, an encounter with a perfumer there gave her what she calls a strong emotional bond with scent. Niclas holds a master's degree in design and has worked as a creative director and visual artist. Their first venture, Agonist, became known in the late 2000s for unisex fragrances presented in handcrafted Swedish glass flacons.
CRA-YON, launched in April 2020 under the motto "Eau de Parfum for Real World Moments," was the couple's attempt to make perfume, in their words, relevant and fun again [3]. The founders have said the project was driven by a desire to disrupt conventional beauty standards and to build a sustainable brand that lets people express themselves through fragrance.
Some secondary references have attributed the brand's founding to Pierre Wulff, a co-founder of the Swedish house Byredo. This appears to be a misattribution: the company's own about pages, in both Swedish and English, name only Christine and Niclas Lydeen, and editorial coverage — including Fragrantica and Now Smell This — consistently credits the Lydeens [2][5]. The confusion likely stems from both parties being Swedish-connected figures in niche perfumery.
Philosophy & positioning
CRA-YON frames fragrance as what the founders describe as an "invisible superpower" — a scent that heightens emotion, energy and presence in everyday moments. The company encourages customers to build what it calls a "fragrance wardrobe" of complementary scents rather than committing to a single signature, and its compositions are designed to be layered and combined. "Everything we do at CRA-YON is designed to inspire joy, curiosity and good feelings," the founders have said; "it's first and foremost a state of mind" [6].
Positioning leans on a Scandinavian sensibility of simplicity, balance and clean ingredients, paired with French perfumery training. The house presents itself as inclusive and gender-neutral, with fragrances marketed as unisex. Editorial coverage has echoed this tone: Now Smell This characterised CRA-YON as "a welcoming, upbeat brand that doesn't take its own cool-kid vibes too seriously" [5].
Products & innovation
The core of the range is an Eau de Parfum collection of roughly ten scents, among them Sand Service, NUTOPIA, Continental, Vanilla CEO, Caramel Days, Young Air, The High Road, The Dusk Daze, Passport Amour, The Fougère Affair and Art Life. Sand Service, a powdery aromatic woody scent, is listed as the bestseller, while NUTOPIA and Continental are flagged as award winners. The compositions draw on notes such as vanilla, fig, matcha, hinoki, caramel, saffron, palo santo and oud, spanning gourmand, woody and aromatic styles. The fragrances are developed with established perfumers, including Christian Provenzano, Kevin Mathys and Julie Pluchet.
Beyond perfume, CRA-YON has extended several scents into perfume oils and a hair and body care line — shampoos, conditioners, lotions and washes under names such as Vanilla CEO and Continental — as well as a home spray, broadening the brand from a fragrance label toward a wider scented-lifestyle range.
On ethics, the company states that its perfumes are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and free from parabens and phthalates. It frames its approach around three stated pillars: sustainable ingredients through responsible sourcing, safety through testing to international standards, and creativity in balancing natural and synthetic materials. CRA-YON says sustainability is "at the heart of our brand ethos" [6].
Recognition
In 2026, NUTOPIA — a gourmand fragrance built around dark chocolate and roasted nuts — won first prize at the Beauty Oscars, an award from the Swedish editors' association Skönhetsredaktörerna; the jury described it as a modern happiness fragrance that "captures zeitgeist without compromising aesthetics" [4].
The brand has also drawn favourable trade and editorial coverage. Writing in Vogue France, beauty journalist Mélanie Nauche said CRA-YON's first collection proved "that the natural fragrance industry can also be a lot of fun." Fragrantica covered the house's launch as a new niche brand from Sweden, and Now Smell This reviewed its Art Life scent in 2024, calling it "totally all-gender and cheerful" [5].
Current status
CRA-YON is an active, independently run house. Through 2024 and 2025 it continued releasing new fragrances — including The High Road, The Fougère Affair and Young Air — and expanded its retail presence, opening at the Boots Fragrance Boutique in London. As of early 2026 the brand was stocked through its own site and department stores including Liberty London, Galeries Lafayette, Le Bon Marché, Printemps, Cult Beauty, Lane Crawford and De Bijenkorf, with its most recent recorded activity being the Galeries Lafayette Paris launch and the Beauty Oscars win in January 2026 [4]. Ownership and parent-company details are not publicly stated; the house presents itself as founder-led by the Lydeens.
