Overview
Davidoff is a Swiss luxury house whose fragrance line operates today as Davidoff Parfums. The name traces back to Zino Davidoff, a Geneva tobacconist who lent it to a wider luxury-goods venture, and the perfumes are the part of that venture most familiar to a beauty audience. The brand reached a mass market in 1988 with the men's eau de toilette Cool Water, which remains its central product. The fragrance business is run under licence by the American group Coty Inc., while the Davidoff trademark belongs to the Zino Davidoff Group, a family company based in Basel.
The line is actively marketed worldwide. Coty renewed and extended its Davidoff fragrance licence in 2023, and the company keeps current campaigns and new releases in circulation, so the brand sits firmly in the present rather than the archive.

Origin and founder
The house is named for Zino Davidoff, born Sussele-Meier Davidoff on 11 March 1906 in Novhorod-Siverskyi, then part of the Russian Empire [7]. His family fled anti-Jewish pogroms and settled in Geneva in 1911, where his father opened a tobacco shop that drew the city's Russian émigrés. Zino took the trade over in stages after travelling through the Americas, and the Geneva shop on the Rue de Rive became the foundation of his reputation. He died in Geneva in 1994.
The brand's own account places the start of Zino's "journey" in 1924 [3], and Davidoff Parfums treats that year as the house's beginning. Independent records frame the early history a little differently: Wikipedia describes Zino as running the Geneva tobacco shop from 1926 onward [8]. The two dates reflect different anchors rather than a clean contradiction — the brand counts from the founder's wider start, the encyclopedic record from the shop he is documented to have operated. The fragrance line itself is much younger, beginning only in the 1980s.
Across his trade Zino became known as the "Grand Seigneur," and the company still describes him as a gentleman explorer and "connoisseur of quality," a figure who found meaning in small details. That image underpins the modern fragrance brand's voice.
History and milestones
Davidoff's path runs through tobacco before it reaches perfume. In 1970 Zino Davidoff sold the cigar and tobacco business to the Basel firm Oettinger AG; the Geneva shop and the trademark passed to Oettinger, and that lineage became the separate company Oettinger Davidoff AG [7]. The luxury-goods arm, including fragrances, was later organised under the Zino Davidoff Group, which Wikipedia records as having been spun out of Davidoff in 1980 [8].
The Davidoff name then expanded across categories in quick succession. The first Davidoff fragrance launched in 1984 [7], followed by Davidoff cognac in 1986 and, in 1988, both the eyewear line and the fragrance that would define the brand — Cool Water. A women's counterpart, Cool Water Woman, arrived in 1997 [6].
Ownership
Two distinct businesses now carry the Davidoff name, and they should not be confused. The cigars and tobacco operation is Oettinger Davidoff AG of Basel, the descendant of the 1970 sale [8]. The fragrances are a wholly separate vertical: the trademark is held by the Zino Davidoff Group, and the perfumes are produced and marketed under licence by Coty Inc., within its Coty Prestige division [9].
Coty dates the partnership to the 1980s and, announcing a renewal in May 2023, described it as a relationship running beyond twenty years. The same announcement placed Davidoff among Coty's most important fragrance licences. The arrangement means the perfumes a shopper finds today are Coty products built on a Swiss-owned name. The Zino Davidoff Group itself remains, in its own words, "a Swiss-based family business" headquartered in Basel [4].
The early commercial history of Cool Water also passed through other hands: Lancaster served as the original United States distributor, and vintage Lancaster-labelled batches were produced into the mid-2000s.
Philosophy and positioning
Davidoff Parfums builds its identity around the idea of the "gentleman explorer," presented as a modern reading of Zino Davidoff's own curiosity and taste. The company frames its work as "an epic olfactive adventure" and ties it to the founder's "quest to source the world's finest ingredients." Its stated values centre on wonder and curiosity, intentional living, and what it calls "depth over distance" — the notion that exploration is about richness of experience rather than reach. The brand sums up its purpose as crafting products "for the search of wonder, refinement, and a life well-lived," and its current tagline reads, "A gentleman by nature. A hero by destiny."
The perfumes sit in the prestige tier, in line with the broader luxury positioning the Zino Davidoff Group applies across its licensed categories, which span leather goods, eyewear, coffee and cognac as well as fragrance.
Products and innovation
Cool Water is the brand's defining release and remains its core line. Created by the perfumer Pierre Bourdon and launched in 1988, the men's eau de toilette is built on a fresh, marine-leaning structure: top notes of mint, sea water and rosemary; a heart of lavender, jasmine, geranium and neroli; and a base of oakmoss, musk and sandalwood [6]. The 1997 women's version, Cool Water Woman, extended the name to female buyers [6].
The range has since grown into a family of flankers and premium variants, including Cool Elixir and the more recent Cool Water Reborn line, alongside intense and parfum concentrations of the original.
Recognition
Cool Water has a documented place in popular culture. It is referenced in Snoop Dogg's 1993 album Doggystyle, on the track "Lodi Dodi," where it appears as part of the rapper's grooming routine [6]. Coty, announcing the 2023 licence renewal, called Cool Water the brand's leading fragrance and described its scents as "iconic" [9].
The brand's marketing has leaned on recognisable faces. Its 2008 Cool Water campaigns featured Josh Holloway, Paul Walker and Scott Eastwood, and the current Cool Water campaign is fronted by the actor Charles Melton.
Current status
Davidoff Parfums is an active, globally marketed fragrance line. The most recent confirmed milestone is Coty's renewal and long-term extension of the Davidoff fragrance licence, announced on 3 May 2023, which the company paired with an ongoing Cool Water campaign and new releases on its official site [9]. The cigars business under Oettinger Davidoff AG continues separately and is not part of the beauty entity.
