Summary

Overview

Ed Hardy is an American fashion and fragrance brand built on the tattoo art of Don Ed Hardy, an American artist whom the brand calls "the Godfather of Modern Tattoos" [1]. The clothing line emerged in the early 2000s and was commercialised by the designer Christian Audigier, who licensed worldwide rights to the name in 2005 through his company Nervous Tattoo [4]. The first Ed Hardy fragrances followed in 2008 [5], and it is this fragrance line that the brand is listed under here. The label remains active: its apparel site sells current collections, and the perfumes continue in distribution.

The brand's two halves sit under different owners. The apparel intellectual property is held largely by Iconix Brand Group, while the fragrance licence has passed through several hands and now rests with Revlon.

Origin and founders

The brand grows out of the work of Don Ed Hardy, a tattoo artist the company's own account describes as "an American born, internationally recognized artist" credited with helping establish tattooing as a legitimate art form [1]. His imagery — tigers, hearts, daggers, roses and script lettering drawn from traditional tattoo flash — became the brand's visual signature.

The commercial enterprise was driven by Christian Audigier, a designer previously associated with Von Dutch. Audigier turned the artwork into a mass-market clothing line, and Fragrantica records that he is "best known for the Ed Hardy line of apparel that features the work of pioneering tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy" [6].

History and milestones

The exact founding date depends on which Ed Hardy is meant. The apparel brand traces to the early 2000s, when Hardy licensed a company to produce clothing from his artwork, with Audigier taking worldwide rights in 2005 [4]. The fragrance line — the entry recorded here — dates instead to its 2008 introduction, when Ed Hardy for Women and Ed Hardy for Men launched [5].

At its height the brand was a commercial force. Ed Hardy reached more than 700 million US dollars in gross revenue in 2009, according to Wikipedia, before a sharp decline over the following two years [4]. The fragrance catalogue expanded beyond the original two scents to include Love & Luck, Hearts & Daggers and Ed Hardy Born Wild. In 2024 the brand held its first fashion show, in Los Angeles, marking a revival of the apparel side.

Ownership

Ownership runs along two separate tracks, and the packet notes a conflict here. For the apparel brand and its underlying intellectual property, Iconix Brand Group acquired a 50 percent stake in May 2009 and raised it to 85 percent by 2011, with Don Ed Hardy retaining the remaining 15 percent [4].

The fragrance licence followed a different path. Trade publication Cosmetics Business reported that Elizabeth Arden "acquired the global licenses and certain related assets for the Ed Hardy, True Religion and BCBGMAXAZRIA fragrance brands from New Wave Fragrances" in 2012 [5]. Elizabeth Arden was itself acquired by Revlon in 2016, and Ed Hardy now appears among the brands listed in Revlon's fragrance portfolio [2]. Within that portfolio it sits alongside fragrance names such as Elizabeth Taylor, Juicy Couture, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Philosophy and positioning

The brand's identity is the translation of tattoo art into fashion and fragrance. According to its own description, Don Ed Hardy spent some fifty years developing tattooing as a recognised craft, and his techniques remain in use among contemporary tattoo artists. That heritage frames Ed Hardy's bold, illustration-led aesthetic, carried from the clothing across to the scent bottles and packaging.

Products and innovation

The brand's main beauty category is fragrance. The line opened in 2008 with two pillars, Ed Hardy for Women and Ed Hardy for Men [6], and broadened over time to take in Love & Luck, Hearts & Daggers and Ed Hardy Born Wild. The apparel business spans tops, denim, dresses, sets and accessories, with the tattoo-flash artwork applied across the range.

Current status

Ed Hardy is treated as active. The apparel site operates as a live e-commerce store with current collections, and the 2024 Los Angeles fashion show signalled renewed activity on that side of the business [4]. The fragrance line remains in distribution as part of Revlon's brand portfolio [2]. The brand's commercial arc has been uneven — a peak around 2009, a steep fall, and a later revival — but both its clothing and its perfumes remain on the market.
