Ella K Parfums

Ella K Parfums is an independent niche perfume house based in Paris, France, created by the perfumer Sonia Constant with her life partner Olivier Gagliardi [7]. Constant, a senior perfumer at Givaudan, built the house around the olfactory memories of her travels, and according to French Wikipedia she was the first woman perfumer to launch her own house [9]. The brand is named after an imagined female explorer inspired by the writers and adventurers Karen Blixen, Ella Maillart and Alexandra David-Neel.

Most sources date the founding to 2017 [9], the year Constant created the brand while continuing her work at Givaudan; the first fragrance collection followed in early 2018. One reference, Parfumo, gives 2018 instead [11], most likely conflating the public launch with the founding. The house remains active: a new fragrance, Myrrh K, was added to its Collection K in 2026.

Sonia Constant trained in perfumery at ISIPCA and completed her education at Givaudan in Paris, where she has spent her career creating fragrances for established fashion and beauty brands. The Perfume Society lists her past work including Burberry Sport for Men, Montblanc Emblem, Balmain Extatic and Guerlain L'Abeille [6]; editorial coverage names further clients such as Narciso Rodriguez, Kenzo and Van Cleef & Arpels [7]. She continues to work at Givaudan while creating for her own house.

Ella K was a personal turn for Constant. The company describes the venture as one that "allowed her to free herself from constraints, to be more daring creatively." The brand presents itself through the figure of Ella K, described as a character of Constant's imagination who pursues both inner journeys and discovery of the wider world. The signature dragonfly motif, designed by the Japanese artist Senjiro Nakata, stands for metamorphosis and resolves into a "K" said to represent the initials of someone close to the perfumer.

The first collection launched in early 2018 and was covered by the perfume press in January of that year [7]. It comprised an initial set of fragrances including Epupa Mon Amour, Baiser de Florence, Brumes de Khao-Sok, Lettre de Pushkar and Pluie sur Ha Long, each tied to a specific place or memory. Fragrantica marked the launch with a feature establishing the Paris house and its Givaudan-perfumer founder [8].

Since then the range has expanded into the Legend Collection and Collection K, the latter adding Amber K, Musc K and, in 2026, Myrrh K.

Ella K frames perfume as a state of mind rather than a product line. The house describes itself as "first and foremost a state of mind," a poetic way of looking at the world "in a constant search for beauty." Its fragrances are presented as "olfactory memories, the poetic traces" of moments Constant has experienced while travelling, and as a tribute to bold, free-spirited women explorers.

Constant has spoken of carrying a Leica camera and a Moleskine notebook on her travels, capturing scents she finds interesting for later composition. The brand's stated values are curiosity, boldness, and a love of the unknown and of meeting new people. The Perfume Society characterises the result as "exquisite fragrances for people who know about fragrance, understand quality" [6], positioning the house at the luxury end of niche perfumery.

The house produces fragrances exclusively. Its perfumes carry place-evoking names such as Camélia K, Poème de Sagano, Lettre de Pushkar, Cri du Kalahari, Mémoire de Daisen In and Reflet sur l'Okavango, alongside a Lettre de Pushkar hair mist. Each is built around a destination or memory rather than a conventional fragrance family.

Two Givaudan technologies underpin the work. Scent Trek, the company explains, captures the scent of rare or inaccessible flowers in the field using a non-destructive glass-bubble method, with the captured air later analysed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry [3]. The compositions also draw on Givaudan's Orpur line of high-purity naturals, among them Neroli Oil from North Africa, Vert de Bergamot from Italy and Jasmine Sambac Absolute from India [3].

Ella K describes a sourcing approach intended "to ensure a stable supply and that local producers and their communities truly benefit from working with us," together with the upcycling of by-products into materials of higher value [3]. The house states no formal certifications, and makes no explicit recyclable- or refillable-packaging claim.

In 2024 the house received two awards. Poème de Sagano was recognised at the Global Osmanthus Award, where Constant was named Perfumer of the Year, and Camélia K won the Extra Ordinary Perfume prize at The Fragrance Foundation UK [2]. The brand's own account also references further Fragrance Foundation and international awards between 2021 and 2023. At launch, the perfume blog ÇaFleureBon reviewed the early fragrances as "intensely personal," describing each as "a scented microcosm" [7].

Ella K Parfums is active. It operates a live e-commerce site shipping across the European Union, the United Kingdom, the EFTA states and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, added the Myrrh K fragrance in 2026, and continues to be led by its founding perfumer.
