Overview
Montblanc is a German luxury maison founded in 1906 [2]. Although its name evokes the Alpine peak on the French–Italian border, the company is German in origin: it was founded in Berlin and is today headquartered in Hamburg [2]. Best known for its writing instruments, the house has extended its name across leather goods, watches and fragrance, the last of which is the category through which it appears in beauty. The brand remains active and is owned by the Swiss luxury group Richemont.
Montblanc does not make its perfumes itself. Since 2010 the fragrance line has been produced under license by Inter Parfums SA, and the catalogue continues to expand, with Explorer Extreme released in 2025 and Legend Elixir in 2026.

Origin & founders
The company began in 1906 when Alfred Nehemias, a Hamburg banker, and August Eberstein, a Berlin engineer, started producing simple pens [2]. Montblanc's own account speaks of "3 pioneering founders of the maison" and dates the house's pioneering work to 1906 [1]. Wikipedia names only the two original producers from 1906, noting that leadership soon passed to Wilhelm Dziambor, Christian Lausen and others who took over the business [2]. The discrepancy is one of counting: the company describes a trio, while the third name is less firmly attested in independent sources.
In its early years the firm operated under other names, trading first as Simplizissiumus-Füllhalter and then as Simplo Filler Pen Co. GmbH before adopting "Montblanc" as its official name in 1934. The white six-pointed star that still marks its products, meant to represent the snowcap of Mont Blanc, was adopted in 1913.
History & milestones
Montblanc's first model, the Rouge et Noir, appeared in 1909. The flagship Meisterstück line of writing instruments followed in 1924 and remains the house's defining product. The number 4810, the height in metres of Mont Blanc, became a recurring motif in the brand's design.
Ownership changed hands across the twentieth century. Alfred Dunhill Ltd. acquired Montblanc in 1977, after which lower-priced pens were dropped and the name was applied to a broader range of luxury goods [2]. In 1993 the company became part of the Swiss Richemont group, placing it alongside sister houses such as Cartier and Chloé [2].
The fragrance business has its own timeline. In 2010 Inter Parfums SA was granted an exclusive worldwide license to create, produce and distribute Montblanc perfumes, taking over from the previous licensee, Procter & Gamble [4]. The arrangement was renewed in 2015 for a further ten years [3].
Ownership
Montblanc has belonged to Compagnie Financière Richemont SA since 1993 [2]. Richemont, a Swiss group, also owns Cartier, Dunhill and Chloé, among other luxury houses. The earlier acquisition by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. in 1977 marked the brand's shift from a pen manufacturer toward a wider luxury-goods identity.
The perfumes sold under the Montblanc name are not produced by Richemont directly. They are made under license by Inter Parfums SA, a separate company, an arrangement first signed in 2010 and renewed in 2015 to run through the end of 2025.
Philosophy & positioning
Montblanc presents its products as long-lived companions rather than disposable goods. The company describes them as "lifestyle companions that will accompany yours and future generations to come," and says its "master craftsmen work diligently to pour their hearts and souls into every step of the creation" [1]. Heritage and craftsmanship sit at the centre of this positioning, summed up in the tagline "Pioneering since 1906".
Within fragrance the brand is positioned in the designer tier. Its men's scents are pitched at an everyday wearer looking for accessible, crowd-pleasing compositions rather than niche perfumery.
Products & innovation
In beauty, Montblanc is present through fragrance, sold as part of a wider luxury catalogue that also covers leather goods and watches. The fragrance offering is organised around recurring lines, principally Legend and Emblem.
Montblanc Legend, created by perfumer Olivier Pescheux, launched in 2011 as an aromatic composition built around lavender, bergamot, pineapple and tonka bean. Montblanc Explorer followed in 2019, a woodier scent developed by Jórdi Fernandez, Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux with notes of bergamot, sage, patchouli and cacao. Among fragrance reviewers, Explorer has been widely described as an affordable, department-store alternative to Creed Aventus [8]. The brand has continued to extend these ranges, with Explorer Extreme arriving in 2025 and Legend Elixir in 2026.
Recognition
The fragrance line grew quickly in commercial terms. In 2015 the trade title Cosmetics Business reported that Inter Parfums' annual sales of Montblanc products exceeded €80m, a roughly 400% increase over four years, driven by the Legend and Emblem lines [3]. At the time of the original license, Montblanc fragrances were distributed in around 50 countries, with the brand maintaining a presence in more than 70.
Montblanc has also used celebrity association to promote its perfumes, signing the singer John Legend to front the Legend fragrance line [6].
Current status
Montblanc is an active global luxury maison owned by Richemont. Its fragrance line, produced under license by Inter Parfums SA, shows continuing activity, with Explorer Extreme released in 2025 and Legend Elixir in 2026. The most recent license term ran through the end of 2025 [3].
