Summary

Overview

Emanuel Ungaro is a French fashion and fragrance house founded in Paris in 1965 [6]. The label was established by the couturier Emanuel Ungaro alongside the Swiss artist Sonja Knapp and Elena Bruna Fassio, and it built its reputation on couture before extending into perfume in the 1980s. The house remains active: its official site carries a current fragrance line and recent ready-to-wear, and women's collections have been designed by Kobi Halperin since 2021 [7].

Within the beauty field, the house is known chiefly for its fragrances. Its first perfume, Diva, arrived in 1983 and is still sold today, anchoring a line that also includes Emanuel Ungaro Cosmic and the men's scent L'Homme III.

Origin and founders

Emanuel Ungaro (1933–2019) was a French fashion designer born in Aix-en-Provence [6]. According to the company, he moved to Paris at the age of 22 and trained under Cristóbal Balenciaga, an apprenticeship the house credits with instilling "the rigor and perfectionism" he would bring to his own label. He opened the fashion house in 1965 with Knapp and Fassio, and by 1967 it was headquartered on Avenue Montaigne in Paris, where its registered company, Emanuel Ungaro SAS, still lists its address.

The house describes its design approach as combining unexpected, sensual clashes of bright colour with prints and draping, and sums up its aesthetic as "unquestioning femininity, purity of silhouette, flamboyant prints and exquisite attention to detail."

History and milestones

Ungaro established the maison as a couture name through the 1960s and 1970s before moving into perfume. Diva, created by the perfumer Jacques Polge, launched in 1983 as the house's first fragrance [9]; the brand presents it as a dedication to women, "his eternal source of inspiration." Further scents followed: Senso in 1987, then Ungaro and Emanuel Ungaro For Men in 1991. In 1997 the company created Emanuel Ungaro Parfums together with Ferragamo and Bulgari [6].

The founder departed the house in 2004, according to the company. A later fragrance, U by Ungaro For Her and For Him, launched in 2008 as a collaboration with Avon, with the actor Reese Witherspoon as its spokeswoman.

Ownership

Ownership and licensing of the label have changed hands several times and are split across companies. In 1996 the house formed a partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo. In 2005, Gruppo Ferragamo sold the label to the internet entrepreneur Asim Abdullah for 84 million US dollars [6]. The Italian company Aeffe took over the production and distribution of Ungaro products in 2012 [6]. More recently, Komark LLC, a subsidiary of S. Rothschild and Co., became the licensee for the design, manufacturing and distribution of the women's apparel collection [7]. The trademark itself is held by Emanuel Ungaro SAS, registered in Paris.

Philosophy and positioning

The house positions itself as a luxury fashion and fragrance house and uses the line "Since 1965" on its site [1]. Its stated design philosophy centres on femininity expressed through colour, print and silhouette, a sensibility the brand traces back to its founder's couture work and carries through to its perfume line.

Products and innovation

The fragrance line is the brand's principal beauty offering. Diva remains its signature scent: a floral-chypre perfume that the company classifies as "semi-oriental floral-chypre" and built around rose, which it treats as the house's symbol. Fragrance press has described Diva as a "honeyed rose patchouli chypre masterpiece," and the brand calls its status "mythical" [9]. Its composition opens on floral and citrus notes, moves through tuberose, ylang-ylang and rose, and finishes on vanilla, sandalwood and iris.

Beyond Diva, the current range includes Emanuel Ungaro Cosmic, described by the house as an amber floral fragrance for women, and the men's scent L'Homme III. Other entries include the Fruit d'Amour Les Elixirs eau de parfums and a standalone Ungaro eau de parfum.

Recognition and press

The house continues to show at Paris Fashion Week. In March 2024, WWD reviewed its Fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection by Kobi Halperin, which drew on Salvador Dalí's painting "Meditative Rose" [8]. Earlier, the CFDA reported Halperin's appointment to design Ungaro and the women's-apparel licensing arrangement with Komark LLC [7].

Current status

The house is active. Its official site lists current fragrances and recent ready-to-wear, including a Summer 2025 collection, and Kobi Halperin has designed the women's line since 2021. The founder, Emanuel Ungaro, died in 2019 [6]; the label has continued under his name, with ownership tied to Asim Abdullah and production and distribution handled by Aeffe.
