Summary

Overview

Enzborn (styled ENZBORN) is a German skin-care and body-care brand made by Ferdinand Eimermacher GmbH & Co. KG, a family-owned manufacturer based in Nordwalde in the Münsterland region of Germany. The brand traces its roots to a milking grease that the Eimermacher company began producing in 1910 for farmers who used it to soothe their hands after work in the stable. The products were sold under the family company's own name for decades; the ENZBORN brand name itself was only introduced in the early 1980s [2].

Today the range covers hand creams, balms, body gels, shower products and lip care built around plant ingredients such as calendula, aloe vera and devil's claw. Everything is developed and manufactured at a single site in Nordwalde, and the brand belongs to the wider Eimermacher Group, a fourth-generation family business whose other companies make products ranging from animal care to ski wax. Enzborn is an active brand.

Origin & founders

The story begins with Ferdinand Eimermacher, who in 1910 set up a small business in the Münsterland supplying oils and fats for uses ranging from animal care to the automotive trade [6]. The group's own history portrays him as a man of wide ambitions: he was among the early pioneers of free-balloon flight, and a 1913 balloon journey from Münster to Königsberg, covered in about six hours, is part of the family lore.

From that same year, according to Enzborn, the company produced a milking grease that became popular with farmers because it cared for hands roughened by work in the stable. As a small family business in close contact with its customers, the company says it received a steady stream of feedback that cracked hands became smooth and supple again with regular use. Those early products carried the Eimermacher name rather than a separate brand.

Ferdinand Eimermacher founded the company, not the ENZBORN name, which arrived some seven decades later. Because the brand counts its heritage from the company's beginnings, it describes itself as offering "natural skin care with responsibility since 1910", while the name under which the products are sold today dates from the early 1980s. Both dates appear on the brand's own history page, and they describe two different milestones rather than a disagreement.

History & milestones

The Eimermacher business grew first in agriculture. The group dates its commercial breakthrough to 1930, when, by its account, a friend who worked as a tropical doctor brought natural balsams back from Peru. Ferdinand Eimermacher used their disinfecting properties in a milking salve that the company says quickly became sought after and set a new standard for hygiene in milk production [6].

In the 1960s the company built on that lead. As dairy farms moved to more powerful milking machines, its research team developed modernised udder-care products, and liquid teat disinfectants and cleaning agents joined the earlier creams and salves. These remained products for the dairy trade rather than for the consumer market.

The decisive step towards human skin care came in 1983, when the company received a manufacturing authorisation under the German Medicines Act (Arzneimittelgesetz) and expanded into the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics [6]. It was in the same period, in the early 1980s, that Eimermacher brought its skin-care products to market under the new ENZBORN brand and broadened the line with further natural ingredients, notably calendula, aloe vera and devil's claw. A local retailer's profile of the brand, published in January 2023, retells the same sequence: milking grease from 1910, then the ENZBORN name and the wider plant-based range in the early 1980s [9].

Further quality milestones followed at the manufacturing level. The company adopted the good manufacturing practice (GMP) production standard in 1994, expanded its liquids production and laboratory in 1996, and extended its raw-material and packaging warehouses in 1998 and 2014. In 2018 it was certified for the first time to the quality-management standards DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and DIN EN ISO 13485:2016, the latter covering medical devices, and to IFS-HPC, a standard for household and personal-care products.

Over the years the original milking grease survived the change of name. The Melkers Original series, which descends directly from that first product, is still described by the company as an essential part of the Enzborn range. According to the brand, its traditions and formulas have now been handed down to the fourth generation of the family business and are being extended through new research and development.

More recently, the brand has presented the German table-tennis player Dimitrij Ovtcharov as its brand ambassador [4]. The Enzborn website carries a dedicated page about him, including his tournament calendar for the 2026 season, and a selection of products labelled as his favourites. In February 2024 the Eimermacher Group announced that it was moving all of the group's webshops to a new platform with a cleaner design.

Ownership

Enzborn is owned and produced by Ferdinand Eimermacher GmbH & Co. KG, registered in Nordwalde, which also publishes the brand's website. The company is managed by Guido Venschott and Philipp Hasebrock [5]. The brand's Swiss sales page describes Enzborn as part of the long-established Eimermacher family company [8].

Ferdinand Eimermacher GmbH & Co. KG is the core of the Eimermacher Group. Besides the parent, the group comprises Schweizer-Effax GmbH, SportoMed GmbH, Holmenkol GmbH, Pharmaka GmbH, E Analytics GmbH, Schweizer-Nova AG and Eimermacher Handels GmbH & Co KG [7]. Several of these were built up through acquisitions. The group took over Schweizer-Effax, a company founded in 1906, in 1997, the same year it set up an Austrian subsidiary. It acquired SportoMed in 2004 and Holmenkol, founded in 1922, in 2012. It founded the Swiss company Schweizer-Nova AG in 2016 and took over Pharmaka in 2019, moving it to Nordwalde in 2021 [6]. These purchases concern the group rather than the Enzborn brand; no acquisitions involving Enzborn itself are documented.

By the group's own figures, it employs more than 200 people and sells over 2,500 different products under 17 brands, working with some 1,000 raw materials and 550 formulas. It reports around 17,000 business customers and deliveries to more than 70 countries worldwide, although these are group-level figures rather than numbers for Enzborn alone. Managing director Guido Venschott has summed up the group's aim as becoming, or remaining, the market leader with unusual niche products in its target markets.

Philosophy & positioning

Enzborn presents itself as a brand devoted entirely to skin, with products for skin care, skin protection and skin health. Its tagline is "ENZBORN – natürlich Haut" (roughly, "naturally skin"). The Swiss sales page describes the formulas as based on natural ingredients, with plant oils, herbal extracts, selected moisturisers and vitamins as their main components, and says that all of the brand's in-house formulas rely on well-known natural ingredients.

The brand sums up its approach in what it calls a "care promise" (Sorgfaltsversprechen). Under this promise, the company says, all products are made with carefully selected ingredients, are based on proven formulas that are continuously developed, undergo external dermatological quality checks, and are developed, produced and filled in-house. Enzborn describes its self-image since 1910 as shaped by high quality standards, a spirit of research and its proven recipes, which it calls the heart of the brand.

The company also makes strong claims about its scientific standards. Its corporate page states that no product leaves the laboratory unless its effectiveness is scientifically proven, and that raw materials, formulas and manufacturing processes are subject to German pharmaceutical law as well as cosmetics production guidelines [3]. The Swiss sales page adds that independent institutes confirm the products' quality and skin compatibility and regularly award them top marks [8]. These are the brand's own statements; the institutes and test results behind them are not named.

"Made in Germany" is central to the brand's identity. The company describes it as a promise of quality and says that it produces exclusively at its site in Nordwalde, where research and development, production, storage, marketing and sales are all handled under one roof. Enzborn is sold through its own online shop with a subscription option, through a business-to-business portal, and through retail partners.

Products & innovation

The Enzborn range has grown from a single milking grease into a broad assortment organised in several series. The oldest is Melkers Original, which continues the 1910 milking-grease tradition; a retailer's overview of the range lists both Melkers Original, a protective skin fat, and Melkers Original Soft, a care cream. Other products in that overview include a cooling gel sold as Pferdesalbe ("horse balm"), a lip butter, a deer-tallow cream (Hirschtalgcreme), a milk hand cream, a hand cleanser and a leg and vein balm.

Calendula, aloe vera and devil's claw have been the defining plant ingredients since the early 1980s. Calendula appears in the Bio Ringelblumensalbe, an ointment with organic calendula extract for stressed skin. Aloe vera is the basis of the Bio Aloe Vera Premium series, which includes a gel with panthenol and a cooling effect, a spray made with 99 percent aloe vera leaf juice, and a cream; the company markets them for use after sun exposure or shaving and states that all three are free of silicones, parabens and microplastics.

Devil's claw gives its name to the Teufelssalbe products, sold as a warming and a cooling pair. Teufelssalbe Heiß is an intensely warming gel for massaging tired muscles, which the company recommends for tension, stiffness and a feeling of cold, while Teufelssalbe Eis is a cooling gel that it promotes for joint discomfort. The brand says both gels absorb quickly without leaving a greasy or sticky film, and describes the warming version as vegan.

A Dead Sea line (Totes Meer) includes a shower gel, a hand balm and a shampoo made with Dead Sea salt. The company describes the shower gel as a mild cleanser for sensitive, irritated skin and claims it is ideal for people with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis [1]; the hand balm and shampoo carry similar claims. These are the brand's own descriptions and have not been independently assessed.

For working hands, the Workers Original series pairs an intensive hand cleanser containing organic scrubbing particles with an Akut hand balm intended to help very stressed and cracked hands recover. Enzborn states that both products are free of microplastics, mineral oils, silicones, parabens and perfume, and that the balm is vegan and pH-neutral. Other products include a urea hand cream for dry hands and a lip butter that the company describes as free of mineral oil. Vegan, paraben-free and fragrance-free claims apply to individual products, not to the range as a whole.

Many Enzborn products carry the statement that their skin compatibility has been dermatologically confirmed, and several are labelled as having been rated "very good" in dermatological tests. The Workers Original Akut hand balm, for example, is presented with a five-star "Sehr gut" rating from Dermatest for skin tolerance.

The quality certificates connected with the brand belong to the manufacturer and its production site rather than to individual products. The company holds a GMP certificate, which it describes as the highest official recognition in the field of pharmaceutical production, as well as the ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and IFS-HPC certifications gained in 2018. No cruelty-free or organic product certification is documented, even though several products contain ingredients labelled as organic.

Sustainability

The company's environmental efforts are mainly described at the level of its production. Its work towards more environmentally friendly manufacturing, including waste reduction and lower use of energy and cleaning agents, has been recognised with an Ökoprofit certificate, a German environmental-management programme for businesses. On its website the brand also asks customers not to put Enzborn packaging into household waste but to return it through the local separate collection systems, such as the Gelber Sack (yellow bag) or the Blaue Tonne (blue bin).

Current status

Enzborn is active. Its German online shop is live and continues to list the full range, and its website footer carries a copyright notice running to 2026. The brand's ambassador page shows Dimitrij Ovtcharov's tournament calendar for the 2026 season. The brand remains a part of the Eimermacher Group, with all products still developed and made in Nordwalde. Besides the German shop, the group's Swiss subsidiary Schweizer-Nova AG maintains a brand page for Enzborn.
