Summary

Overview

Ensbona, written ENSBONA by its maker, is a German skincare brand produced by Ferdinand Eimermacher GmbH & Co. KG, a family-owned manufacturer in Nordwalde in the Münsterland region of north-west Germany. Its range is built around ointments, gels and creams for everyday skin problems such as chapped hands, scars and itchy or reddened skin, alongside cooling and warming gels for muscles and joints, including the Pferdesalbe ("horse ointment") and the Teufelssalbe line. The company says every product is developed, manufactured and filled in Germany [1].

The brand dates its founding to 1910 [1], the year in which Ferdinand Eimermacher set up the small oils-and-fats business from which today's company grew [9]. No source gives a separate date for the Ensbona name, so the brand's stated age is in practice the age of the company behind it. Ensbona is active, with a current range sold through its own online shop in Germany and, through a group subsidiary, in Austria.

Origin & founders

The origin story Ensbona tells is essentially the story of its parent company. According to the Eimermacher group, everything began on a modest scale in 1910, when Ferdinand Eimermacher established a small business in the Münsterland that supplied oils and fats. The early product spread was wide. A German business directory describes a range that ran from animal-care products through goods for restaurants and caterers to oils for the motor trade [12].

Milking grease soon moved to the centre of that business. As dairy farms adopted modern milking systems, the care side of the trade changed as well, and two lines of work took shape that still define the company today: skin care for people, and hygiene products for milk production on farms.

Ferdinand Eimermacher is named as the founder of the company. No source credits him, or anyone else, with creating the Ensbona brand as such, and the year in which the name was first used is not documented. The brand's "more than 100 years of experience" therefore refers to the continuity of the manufacturer rather than to a dated brand launch.

History & milestones

The company's own history marks 1930 as its breakthrough. That year it brought out a milking salve based on natural balsams which, according to the company, had been brought back from Peru by a doctor of tropical medicine [9].

The next turning point came in 1983, when the company received a manufacturing licence under the German Medicines Act and expanded into pharmaceutical and cosmetics production [9]. In 1994 the company adopted Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), the production standard used in the pharmaceutical industry.

In 2018 the company was certified for the first time to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015, IFS-HPC Version 2 and DIN EN ISO 13485:2016. These quality milestones belong to the manufacturer rather than to Ensbona alone. The group states that all of its production, from research and development to storage and logistics, takes place at its Nordwalde site.

More recent changes have been digital. In February 2024 the Eimermacher group announced new webshops built on the Shopware platform, saying that all of the group's shops would move over to the new system step by step [8]. Ensbona today operates its own online shop, with customer accounts and a subscription option for repeat orders.

Ownership

Ensbona belongs to Ferdinand Eimermacher GmbH & Co. KG, a limited partnership with its headquarters in Nordwalde [3]. The business directory wer-zu-wem lists it as a family company owned by the Eimermacher family, founded in 1910, with 115 employees in Germany and annual revenue in the band of 100 to 250 million euros [12]. The same profile places the company 7,691st in its ranking of the largest companies in Germany and states that its entire production and administration are located in Nordwalde.

The company is now run in its fourth generation, according to the group. It forms the core of the wider Eimermacher Group, which also includes Schweizer-Effax GmbH, SportoMed GmbH, Holmenkol GmbH, Pharmaka GmbH, E Analytics GmbH, Schweizer-Nova AG and Eimermacher Handels GmbH & Co KG [8]. The group says it employs more than 200 people and sells over 2,500 products under 17 brands. It also reports about 17,000 business customers, some 1,000 raw materials and 550 formulations, and a site of 70,000 square metres.

The group's activities reach well beyond skin care. Its farm business sells udder-hygiene products under the Eimu and Kalff names, covering udder washes, milk tests, cleaning products and milk filters. Holmenkol makes ski-care waxes, and Effax is listed as a household-chemicals business based in Nordwalde.

Within skin care, Ensbona sits next to several sister lines. The closest is Enzborn, a range centred on milking-fat products, with creams, lotions and gels, that the directory describes as sold through drugstores and health-food shops. The company also sells a separate product line simply called Pferdesalbe, and Tebasan, which covers skin and hair care such as tea tree oil, hand balm and body milk. Some names overlap between the lines: a tea tree oil appears on the Ensbona site as "ENSBONA Tebasan Teebaumöl", and Enzborn sells a product under the same Teufelssalbe name as Ensbona [13].

In Austria, the group's trading company, Eimermacher Handels GmbH, sells Ensbona alongside Enzborn and Deumavan as separate brands [10]. Group management describes its strategy in terms of niche products: managing director Guido Venschott has said that the aim is to be, or to become, the market leader in its target markets with unusual niche products.

Philosophy & positioning

Ensbona presents itself as skin care that has been developed and made in Germany with great attention over four generations. The brand puts sensitive skin at the centre of its message, inviting customers to trust "over 100 years of experience" in caring for it. It names four principles behind its products: carefully selected, high-quality ingredients; formulations rooted in tradition that are continuously developed further; dermatological testing by independent institutes; and development, manufacturing and filling in Germany.

The pharmaceutical background is part of how the brand describes itself. Its products, the company says, combine long-proven active ingredients with care substances from its own research and development. In brand copy reproduced by an online pharmacy, the company says that raw materials, formulations and manufacturing processes at Eimermacher are subject to medicines law and to the production rules for cosmetics for human use, and it calls its GMP certificate the highest official recognition in pharmaceutical production [11]. The group goes further on its own site, stating that no product leaves its laboratory unless its efficacy has been scientifically proven.

A German business directory characterises Ensbona chiefly by its hand-care products, oil baths and the Ensbona Pferdesalbe [12]. The current range is broader than that description and still includes both hand care and the horse ointment. An online pharmacy groups the brand's products under five headings: Dead Sea, hand cream, Pferdesalbe, ice and hot, and general care.

The brand's ethical claims are made product by product rather than for the range as a whole. Several individual products are labelled vegan, among them the scar ointment, the warming Teufelssalbe Heiß gel and its roll-on, the Juckstopp itch gel and the 500 ml Pferdesalbe. Some are described as free of silicones and parabens, including the 500 ml Pferdesalbe, the organic aloe vera spray and the itch gel. No third-party ethical or organic certification is documented for the brand as a whole.

On environmental matters, the commitments documented are those of the parent group rather than of Ensbona. The group says its efforts to cut waste and reduce its use of energy and cleaning agents were recognised with the Ökoprofit certificate.

Products & innovation

The brand's online shop sorts the range into three groups: skin care (Hautpflege), skin health (Hautgesundheit) and skin protection (Hautschutz). Several products sit on the border between cosmetics and health care, and product descriptions tend to focus on a specific complaint rather than on beauty in a broader sense.

A large part of the range consists of gels and ointments for muscles and joints. The Ensbona Pferdesalbe is presented as a cooling preparation for muscles and tendons with natural ingredients such as camphor, rosemary, arnica and horse chestnut. Its 500 ml version is described as having a "two-phase effect", absorbing quickly without stickiness, leaving no colour residue and being pH-neutral to the skin. The Teufelssalbe line comes in two temperatures. Teufelssalbe Eis is an intensely cooling gel for joint complaints, while Teufelssalbe Heiß is a warming gel for tension, stiffness and a feeling of cold. Both are also sold as roll-on fluids, which the brand presents as a way to apply the product on the go without touching it; the cooling roll-on is described as colourless.

Hand care forms the second main group. A hand cream with jojoba oil and urea is aimed at dry, stressed hands and is described as absorbing quickly without a greasy feel, and a second hand cream uses sea buckthorn oil. The Akut Handbalsam is presented as a repair balm for extremely stressed and cracked hands. The brand says it has a confirmed repair effect and protects the skin "like a second skin" against weather and the environment.

The skin-health products address specific problems. The Narbensalbe, a 20 ml scar ointment, is described as a natural care complex with skin oils that makes scars softer and smoother; it is free of colourants and fragrance. The Zinksalbe, a zinc ointment, is offered as calming care for irritated and reddened skin. The Juckstopp gel is a cooling gel for itching, insect bites and mild allergic skin reactions. The brand also presents it as suitable after contact with the oak processionary caterpillar.

Protective and soothing care makes up the rest of the range. The Lanolin Creme uses wool wax to protect sensitive, stressed skin and to keep wetness away. Two organic aloe vera products contain panthenol, which the brand says soothes the skin. The 50 ml spray is described as 99 per cent pure aloe vera from organic farming, for skin and hair, while the 100 ml gel is aimed at use after sun exposure or shaving.

A few items reflect the company's pharmaceutical side more directly. The Ensbona Basiscreme is a base cream made to the DAC standard and sold in a 1 kg pack as an ointment base for further processing. The Tebasan tea tree oil is pure tea tree oil intended to be diluted in washing water and foot baths.

Across the range, most product listings state that skin tolerance has been confirmed dermatologically, and a few, such as the aloe vera spray, state that it was rated "very good". The company says its products are tested by independent institutes [1]. No patents, proprietary technologies or research partnerships are documented for the brand.

Current status

Ensbona is an active brand. Its German online shop carries a current range across all three product groups, and the group's Austrian trading company also sells it. The Eimermacher group as a whole says its products reach customers in more than 70 countries, but Ensbona's own sales are documented only in Germany and Austria. The brand remains a small, ointment-focused line within a larger family-owned manufacturing group, made at the same Nordwalde site where the parent company has its headquarters.
