Summary

Overview

Frapin is a French niche perfume line that grew out of the Frapin cognac house of Segonzac, in the Grande Champagne area of Charente. The fragrance business was launched by Béatrice Cointreau, a member of the Frapin family, and its debut scent took its name from the year the cognac estate was founded. The line remains in active distribution: it is sold through the Paris perfumer Liquides Parfums and stocked by niche fragrance retailers, with new editions appearing as recently as 2024.

The exact starting point of the perfume line is reported inconsistently across public sources. Two independent accounts place its launch in 2002, naming Béatrice Cointreau and the first fragrance "1270" [6][5]; the Liquides Parfums brand page states the house "has operated since 2004" [1], while a 2014 review dates the perfume line to 2008 [4]. The flagship "1270" itself is listed with a 2010 release on Fragrantica [8]. This article treats 2002 as the founding of the perfume line, with the later dates reflecting commercial releases or relaunches.

Origin and founders

The perfume line descends from P. Frapin & Cie, the cognac producer founded in 1270 at Segonzac, which the family has run for what its own materials describe as twenty generations [2]. The Frapin family settled in the Charente region as winemakers before turning to distillation, and the house counts among its ancestors the Renaissance writer François Rabelais. Frapin's perfumery later drew on that lineage: the fragrance L'Humaniste is presented as a homage to Rabelais.

The move into perfume came through Béatrice Cointreau, daughter of Geneviève Frapin and Max Cointreau and a great-granddaughter of Pierre Frapin. According to the editorial accounts that place the launch in 2002, she introduced the fragrance line with a first perfume named "1270" in honour of the cognac house's founding year [5]. The idea, as the company frames it, was to carry the craft and methods of cognac-making across into perfumery, treating both as expressions of the same family savoir-faire.

The Liquides Parfums brand page lists a second figure, David Frossard, as Frapin's artistic director, and some sources name him in connection with the brand's direction rather than its origin [1]. Frossard's background is in fragrance distribution and at L'Artisan Parfumeur; in 2005 he founded Différentes Latitudes, a company specialising in independent perfume brands, which has been involved with houses such as Byredo, Juliette Has A Gun and Atelier Cologne. He took on the artistic direction of Frapin to develop fragrances honouring the historic house, and in 2013 created the Liquides "Bar à Parfums" through which Frapin is now sold. He is recorded here as the line's later operator and creative director, not as its founder.

Ownership

Frapin's perfume line is operated and distributed through Liquides Parfums, the Paris house associated with David Frossard and his company Différentes Latitudes [1]. The brand's former standalone website, parfums-frapin.com, now redirects to the Liquides Parfums brand page, indicating that the line is run under the Liquides umbrella rather than as an independent web presence. The cognac house remains a separate family business; as of 2024 its president is Jean-Pierre Cointreau, a grandson of Marie Frapin [2].

Philosophy and positioning

Frapin positions its fragrances as a transposition of cognac craft into perfumery. The company emphasises what it calls "olfactory elegance," built on "timeless raw materials, ancestral know-how, refined emotions." One editorial summary frames the house as reflecting "the values that have driven the house for centuries: rigor, authenticity, and French elegance" [6]. The Liquides material describes the line as leaning on "resolutely masculine" themes — boxing, speed, literature, and historical figures such as Edgar Allan Poe and Rudyard Kipling — while presenting the scents as suitable across genders.

In market terms the line sits in niche perfumery. The 2014 Kafkaesque review describes Frapin as a luxury niche perfume house and notes pricing that was, at the time, "quite moderate by the admittedly skewed standards of the niche world" [4]. Its current eau de parfum bottles are listed at €170 on the Liquides Parfums site, with smaller travel formats sold at lower prices.

Products and innovation

The collection is built around eau de parfum, with extract concentrations, discovery kits and travel formats also offered. The debut "1270" is described as a homage to the family's origins, and remains the line's signature reference. Other named fragrances include L'Humaniste, the Rabelais tribute; 1697, created by the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour; The Orchid Man; and Bois Blanc, which the company links to the rhythm of days and seasons and "the wind blowing through the trees."

Frapin has worked with a range of established noses across its range, among them Sidonie Lancesseur — credited with the flagship "1270" — alongside Bertrand Duchaufour, Jérôme Epinette, Anne-Sophie Behaghel and others. The fragrances frequently use rich, cognac-adjacent materials: notes documented across the line include a dark rum and eau-de-vie character, tonka, pepper, patchouli, cedar, myrrh and ambergris, placing much of the collection in a warm, boozy gourmand register [7].

Recognition and press

Frapin's perfumery has been covered chiefly in specialist fragrance media rather than mainstream press. The Kafkaesque blog published a detailed review of "1270" in 2014, treating the line as a niche house that bridges cognac heritage and perfumery, and L'Humaniste has appeared in Fragrantica's niche perfumery news coverage [9]. The wider Frapin name also carries the cognac house's separate record of awards, including a "World's Best Spirit" designation at the 2008 International Spirits Challenge for one of its cognacs.

Current status

The Frapin perfume line is active. Fragrantica's designer profile lists 21 perfumes, with editions ranging from 2007 to a newest release dated 2024, and the range continues to be sold through Liquides Parfums and niche retailers [7]. Its independent web presence has been folded into the Liquides Parfums platform, but the fragrances remain in production and on sale.
