Innisfree is a South Korean skincare and cosmetics brand owned by Amorepacific, the country's largest cosmetics company. It was launched in 2000 as Amorepacific's first eco-friendly line, built around naturally derived ingredients sourced from Jeju Island and a stated commitment to clean, affordably priced formulas [5][6]. The brand takes its name from "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," a poem by the Irish writer W. B. Yeats.

Independent editorial and Wikipedia both date the brand's launch to 2000, while Innisfree's own site references 1979 — the start of Amorepacific's green-tea agricultural work on Jeju that later supplied the brand, rather than Innisfree's own debut [2]. The company is among the brands credited with carrying the broader K-beauty wave to Western markets in the 2010s.

Innisfree's origin story centres on Jeju Island, a volcanic island off the southern coast of South Korea designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. According to the company, the founder was inspired by watching his mother make personal care products from camellia oil, and later travelled to Jeju to establish the brand, drawing on the island's volcanic soil, mineral-rich water and climate for green-tea cultivation [2].

Sources differ on who that founder was. The retailer Space NK and disambiguation of Amorepacific's corporate history attribute the founding to Suh Sung-whan (also transliterated Sunghwan Suh) [6]. Wikipedia's infobox instead lists Suh Kyung-bae [8], who is Amorepacific's chairman and chief executive and inherited leadership of the group from his father; the listing appears to conflate the brand's founder with the executive overseeing its launch.

Innisfree operates as a brand within Amorepacific, the South Korean cosmetics group that launched it in 2000. Amorepacific's stable also includes Laneige, Sulwhasoo, Etude, Mamonde and Ryo, among others, positioning Innisfree as the group's eco-conscious, nature-derived line.

Innisfree describes its approach as combining nature and science, summed up in the stated mission to "create affordable skincare with a conscious touch" [2]. Its formulations draw on what the company calls 15 island-sourced ingredients, among them a proprietary "Beauty Green Tea" variety it says is certified USDA organic, alongside bija (Torreya) seed, cherry blossom and a volcanic mineral cluster.

The brand markets itself on a set of "Innisfree-Clean" standards, stating its products are formulated without parabens, phthalates, formaldehydes, sulfates (SLS/SLES), talc and several other ingredients. It was certified cruelty-free by PETA effective February 2024, and says many of its products are vegan [3]. Beyond skincare, Innisfree has worked in colour cosmetics; Wikipedia records it as the first K-beauty brand to launch two inclusive cushion foundation lines spanning 14 shades [5]. The company says product development runs through an in-house "Green Innovation Lab."

Sustainability is part of Innisfree's stated identity rather than a side initiative. The company reports planting more than 294,000 trees globally since 2012 and over 67,000 in the United States since 2018 through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation [3]. It says all of its outer packaging uses FSC-certified paper printed with soy ink, and that its green-tea serum offers refills. The brand also runs a free empties-recycling program with TerraCycle, which it says accepts Innisfree packaging regardless of where it was purchased, and participates in Sephora's "Beauty (Re)Purposed" collection scheme [4]. An earlier "Empty Bottle Collection Campaign," begun in 2003, rewarded customers for returning used containers.

Innisfree is frequently described in retail and editorial coverage as one of the pioneering brands of K-beauty, a framing used by Space NK in its profile of the company [6]. Over the years it has worked with a series of Korean celebrity ambassadors, including the actor Song Hye-kyo, Yoona of Girls' Generation, Lee Min-ho, Jang Won-young of Ive, and Mingyu of Seventeen, who joined as an ambassador in 2023.

In 2021 Innisfree faced a greenwashing controversy over a Green Tea Seed Serum sold under packaging labelled "Hello, I'm Paper Bottle." A customer found a plastic bottle inside the paper wrapper and posted about it on Facebook, and the complaint went viral [5]. Innisfree apologised, saying the "paper bottle" wording was meant only to describe the paper label surrounding the bottle and acknowledging it had "overlooked the possibility that the naming could mislead." The company added that the inner plastic bottle is recyclable and uses 51.8 percent less plastic than conventional packaging.

Innisfree is active. It operates direct e-commerce alongside multi-channel retail and Sephora distribution, and its product range spans markets across Asia, North America, Australia, the Middle East and Europe. Its North American physical stores closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, with sales continuing through Sephora; the brand maintains an active US e-commerce site and ongoing product launches.
