Overview
Issey Miyake is a prestige fragrance brand built around the work of the Japanese fashion designer of the same name. Its national identity is Japanese, tied to Miyake himself, though the fragrance line has been developed and manufactured in France from the start: the perfumes are co-created with Beauté Prestige International, a Paris-based affiliate of the Japanese group Shiseido [2]. Wikipedia describes the line plainly as a fragrance "produced for Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake" [5], while Shiseido's corporate material frames it as a French-made collection [2] — the brand reads as Japanese in origin and French in production.
The house dates from 1992, when its first scent, L'Eau d'Issey, was released [2]. The brand remains active and globally distributed; Shiseido reports availability in 121 countries and regions. Issey Miyake himself died in 2022, but the fragrance business has continued under Shiseido since.
Origin & founders
The fragrance venture began in 1991, when Issey Miyake signed a licensing agreement with Shiseido. The deal created and designated Beauté Prestige International (BPI), a Paris affiliate set up that year, to manufacture his first women's fragrance [8]. The resulting perfume, L'Eau d'Issey, launched in 1992.
Miyake conceived the scent around water. According to Wikipedia, he "saw water as both the greatest material, as well as the greatest source for inspiration." He framed the idea in everyday terms, telling the press, as quoted by WWD: "When I thought of perfume, the first thing that came to mind was water." The name carries a second meaning — "the water of Issey" in French, and, as WWD notes, a play on the word "odyssey."
The perfume itself was composed by Jacques Cavallier. He described it as "the scent of the spray rising from a waterfall, mingling with the perfume of flowers, and the fragrance of woods in springtime." Its watery character came in part from Calone, an aroma chemical that lent what one review called a "watermelon breeze."
History & milestones
L'Eau d'Issey arrived at a moment when, in the words of one retrospective, "the perfume world was drowning in heavy orientals and synthetic powerhouses." Its launch campaign was photographed by Irving Penn and built around a conical bottle topped with a metallic ball.
The fragrance won the Fragrance Foundation FiFi Award for best women's introduction in Europe in 1993 [8]. Its commercial reach soon outgrew Miyake's clothing: by 1994 he remarked, as recorded by WWD, "People recognize me more through my perfume than my fashion now." A men's counterpart, L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme, followed in 1994 [5].
In 2021 the brand reported that all of its new fragrances had become vegan-certified [3].
Ownership
The line operates under Shiseido, the Japanese cosmetics group, through its Paris affiliate Beauté Prestige International, which both developed and manufactures the fragrances [8]. Shiseido presents Issey Miyake within its Prestige portfolio and, according to WWD, now manages a range that includes Drop d'Issey, L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme and Fusion d'Issey.
Within Shiseido, Issey Miyake sits alongside other prestige and designer fragrance and beauty names owned or licensed by the group, among them Clé de Peau Beauté, NARS, Serge Lutens and Narciso Rodriguez.
Philosophy & positioning
The brand's identity centres on water and nature. Its homepage opens with the line, "Originally there was water. A source of life, the beginning of everything within nature, an inspiration for Issey Miyake," and uses the tagline #movedbynature. Shiseido's summary of the philosophy is that Issey Miyake "envisions Nature 'as the best perfumer.'" The company also frames its outlook as a "luxury of the essential," paired with what it calls "sensory design to reconnect us all with what truly matters."
In market terms the line is positioned as prestige and sold across multiple channels worldwide. Editorial coverage characterises its typical wearer as minimalist professionals and fragrance newcomers seeking understated, office-appropriate scents.
Products & innovation
L'Eau d'Issey remains the centre of the range. The brand describes it as "the scent of water on a woman's skin," an aquatic floral that Wikipedia summarises as having "top notes of Lotus, Melon, and Freesia, and a woody white musk base." The line has since expanded into numerous variants and flankers, including L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme, A drop d'Issey, Le Sel d'Issey and Fusion d'Issey, alongside newer releases such as Lumière d'Issey and Les Eaux d'Issey Essentielles.
Much of the brand's recent product development is framed around sustainability, with manufacturing in France at sites in Ormes and Gien. According to the company, its formulas reach up to 93% natural-origin ingredients and use 100% natural-origin alcohol distilled from French beetroot, with all new fragrances vegan-certified since 2021 [3]. On the packaging side, the brand cites refillable bottles, gift sets made from cardboard, glass containing up to 20% post-consumer recycled material, and a patented cap made entirely of wood. It says both French facilities hold ISO 14001 certification and have sent zero waste to landfill since 2014.
Recognition
Beyond the 1993 FiFi Award [8], L'Eau d'Issey is widely credited with helping shift fragrance tastes in the 1990s. A specialist review called it "one of the era's most successful aquatic-ozonic scents," and Wikipedia states it "achieved an enormous popularity, especially in the United States in the 1990s" and "has had a remarkable influence upon the world of perfume" [5].
Current status
The brand is active and global in scope. Shiseido lists distribution across 121 countries and regions [2], and the line continues to issue new fragrances. Although the designer Issey Miyake died in 2022 [8], the fragrance house has carried on under Shiseido, and editorial coverage in 2025 noted that the original L'Eau d'Issey still holds shelf space across major retailers more than three decades after its launch.
