Summary

Overview

Kansosan is a Japanese skincare and base-makeup brand developed by BCL Company, launched in 2021 [6]. It specialises almost entirely in one concern: dry skin. The name itself doubles as a personification of the dry-skinned consumer, and its middle letters spell out "SOS" [6]. The brand pairs hydration-focused skincare with hybrid products that sit between skincare and makeup, sold across Japan and several East Asian markets and stocked by Nordic retailers.

The brand grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic, when prolonged mask-wearing made facial dryness a wider complaint. It reached a broad audience after going viral on Japanese social media, and its first product later reported cumulative sales of more than two million units [6].

Origin and founders

Kansosan was conceived by Saito Kumiko (齊藤久美子), who has led product planning and development at BCL Company since 2020. As Kansosan is a sub-brand within BCL rather than an independent company, Saito is more precisely its creator and planning director than a founder in the corporate sense.

According to an origin-story interview in the Japanese beauty magazine Maquia, the idea formed during the pandemic. With masks worn for long stretches, skin dryness intensified, yet the popular full-coverage primers of the time relied on powders that Saito felt dried the skin further. She described wanting "to develop a product that specialized entirely in dryness care" [6]. That single-minded focus — rejecting the multifunctional "do everything" base in favour of one theme — became the brand's defining angle.

The brand name carries a deliberate piece of wordplay: read across, the central letters of "KANSOSAN" form "SOS," framing dry skin as a small distress signal.

History and milestones

Kansosan launched in November 2021 with a limited-edition Skincare Moisture Base (SPF37 PA+++) [6]. The company has described a strategy of releasing products in limited quantities first to gauge demand before committing to a permanent line. The approach worked: beauty influencers discovered the primer, social-media buzz followed, and roughly nine months later the product became a permanent line.

Since then the range has widened well beyond the original base. It now spans several themed lines, including medicinal (薬用) formulations regulated in Japan as quasi-drugs (医薬部外品), and a newer Suibunryoku ("Water Power") series whose brightening essence and mist were covered by WWD Japan.

Ownership

Kansosan is owned by BCL Company, a Japanese cosmetics company founded in 1979. Sources differ on how BCL's corporate parentage is described. The Maquia editorial and BCL's own corporate materials place BCL under StylingLife Holdings Inc. [6], while Kansosan's category page on the BCL Brand store describes BCL as "part of TBS Group" [1]. The harvested corporate-structure record identifies StylingLife Holdings as the parent organisation, with TBS appearing as an investor rather than the direct corporate parent.

Within BCL's portfolio, Kansosan sits alongside sister brands such as Saborino and the AHA Cleansing Research line. In a 2025 interview with The Worldfolio, BCL president Kazushige Omura described Kansosan as the company's second-strongest brand after Saborino [7].

Philosophy and positioning

The brand's stated motto is "すべての乾燥肌に届け!" ("Deliver to all dry skin"), and BCL frames Kansosan as a companion for people with recurring dryness and related concerns such as fine lines and sensitivity. Pricing is positioned in the accessible, mid-price range rather than at a premium tier [12], and the company emphasises affordability alongside efficacy.

Much of the brand's identity rests on its mascot, Moriko-san (乾燥守子), a 27-year-old character drawn by an illustrator experienced with LINE stickers. Designed to read as approachable and humorous rather than highly stylised, she personifies the dry-skinned consumer the brand addresses.

Products and innovation

The brand's signature product is the Skincare Moisture Base, a multifunctional base marketed as a moisturiser, sunscreen and makeup primer in one. According to Maquia, the moisturising primer line surpassed two million units in cumulative sales [6]; Daily Vanity Singapore described the base as a "viral 3-in-1 Japanese primer" circulating on YouTube and TikTok. The catalogue also includes a Medical Moisture Essence Cream, a medicinal high-moisture lotion, and UV-focused products such as a Moisturizing UV Essence (SPF50+ PA++++).

Across editorial coverage, the formulations are consistently associated with hydration-oriented ingredients including niacinamide, multiple types of ceramides, amino acids, hyaluronic acid and petrolatum (vaseline) to seal in moisture [6]. The company states that its moisture base is free from alcohol, parabens, silicone and synthetic fragrance, positioning it for sensitive skin [8]. Several of the medicinal lines are registered under Japan's quasi-drug (医薬部外品) framework for active ingredients targeting concerns such as wrinkles and irritation.

Recognition

Kansosan has been the subject of editorial features rather than formal awards. Beyond the Maquia origin-story interview, Oricon News covered its mid-price skincare strategy, WWD Japan reported on the Suibunryoku launch, and Daily Vanity Singapore published a product review. Daily Vanity also noted that a cosmetic scientist commended the base's "skin-soothing, moisturising ingredients" [8].

Current status

Kansosan is an active and growing brand. Its hero primer moved from a limited release to a permanent line, the range has continued to expand, and BCL has described ongoing launches into 2025 [7]. In The Worldfolio interview, Omura said the brand is popular in East Asia and that BCL intends to expand it to Europe and North America, while noting that sales in humid Southeast Asia are less promising for a dry-skin product [7]. Current expansion was described as concentrating on Hong Kong and Taiwan.
