According to the company's own history, BCL entered the cosmetics business in 1979 as a division of Sony Creative Products Inc., working through a technological tie-up with the French company Stendhal, and began rolling out products to 18 department stores [1]. A products centre was established in Shizuoka in 1985.

In 1996 the cosmetics division broke off from Sony Creative Products Inc. and became Sony CP Laboratories Inc., headquartered in Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, with the stated aim of expanding the cosmetics business [1].
