Overview
Saborino is a Japanese skincare brand launched in 2015 [1], built around a single idea: completing a morning or evening skincare routine in one sheet mask, in about sixty seconds. Its name comes from the Japanese word saboru (サボる), meaning "to be lazy" or "to skip your routine" [2] — a shortcut reframed as a selling point rather than a shortcoming. The brand belongs to the Japanese cosmetics maker BCL Company, part of the StylingLife group.
The line was created by BCL's Girls' Development Lab, an internal project team drawn from the company's sales, marketing, promotion and planning departments and described by the brand as "a project for women, by women" [2]. The remit was narrow and practical: give time-pressed women a full routine without the usual sequence of steps.
Origin and concept
Saborino grew out of a simple observation about how little time many people have for skincare. The Girls' Development Lab set out to fold the several stages of a routine — cleansing, toning, moisturising and preparing the skin for makeup — into one product [2]. The result was a sheet mask designed to be worn for roughly a minute, positioned as an all-in-one alternative to a multi-step regimen.
The brand plays openly on the meaning of saboru. Rather than framing the product as cutting corners, Saborino presents the shortcut as the point: skincare that fits a busy morning or a tired night. Its tagline, "1 minute is all you need," states the promise directly [3].
Products
The original and best-known product is the Saborino Morning Facial Sheet Mask, meant to clean, nourish and create a moisturising base for makeup in a single step. An evening counterpart, the Goodnight Mask, combines the functions of a lotion, milk, cream, serum and treatment in one 60-second application.
The range has since widened into several families. Morning masks appear in variants such as botanical, minty fresh, moisture-rich, rice and Vitamin C formulations, alongside a Vitamin A Goodnight Mask. A Mega Shot series adds more concentrated formulas, including a Morning Collagen Peeling Vitamin C Mask and a Night Shiratama Beauty Mask. A later Medical line targets specific concerns — brightening, acne care and wrinkle care — with a longer, roughly ten-minute wear time [4]. According to the Singapore beauty publication Daily Vanity, the medical masks use 2% tranexamic acid for brightening, 0.05% dipotassium glycyrrhizate for acne care and 5% niacinamide for wrinkles, and are formulated without alcohol, menthol, mineral oil or fragrance [4].
Ingredients cited across the range include several types of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, rice-derived ingredients sourced from Hokkaido, and botanical extracts such as coix seed, rosemary leaf and chamomile flower [5].
Beyond the formulas, Saborino points to two design features: a tri-fold packaging system intended to keep the masks hygienic and easy to remove, and a stretchable non-woven fabric with an enlarged mouth opening so the mask can be worn while doing other things.
Ownership
Sources differ on which company sits behind Saborino. The brand itself is owned by BCL Company, whose own materials and its parent StylingLife Holdings describe Saborino as one of its house brands [1]. BCL — the initials stand for "Beauty Creative Lab" — merged with StylingLife Holdings Inc. in January 2011 to become Styling Life Holdings BCL Company Inc. [1]. Within BCL's portfolio, Saborino sits alongside brands including BCL, AHA by Cleansing Research and TSURURI.
By contrast, the footer of the Singapore site saborino.sg names Mandom Corp. as the parent company [2]. Mandom Corporation is a separate Japanese firm that operates the Singapore domain as the local licensee and distributor; the reference reflects territorial distribution rights rather than ownership of the brand, which remains with BCL.
Recognition
The Morning Facial Sheet Mask has been the brand's commercial anchor. BCL reports that cumulative shipments across the Saborino series reached 300 million units by December 2018 — a figure the company likens to roughly two sheet masks for every person in Japan. It also states that the Morning Facial Sheet Mask had accumulated 120 "best cosmetics" awards by 2023 [1]. These figures come from BCL's own corporate reporting.
Saborino expanded into Korea in March 2018 and, that same year, took the Best Blonde Prize in the health and beauty category at Korea's LOHB's LOVE H&B Awards [6]. In a 2024 interview, BCL president Kazushige Omura described Saborino as the company's flagship brand, saying its morning facial sheet mask had "disrupted traditional beauty routines" [7]. The editorial blog Miho's Happy Life has called the masks "a household name" in Japan [8].
Current status
Saborino is an active brand. BCL Company continues to publish press releases, and the Saborino line is still growing, with the medical mask range among its more recent additions. According to aggregated reporting, the brand is sold in more than 20 countries, with distribution spanning drugstores, supermarkets and e-commerce platforms.
