Summary

Overview

Karl Lagerfeld Fragrance is the perfume line of the French fashion house Karl Lagerfeld, founded by the German designer of the same name in 1984 [4]. The house is headquartered in Paris, at 21 Rue Saint-Guillaume in Saint-Germain-des-Prés — the designer's former office — with a second office in Amsterdam. The fragrances are produced under license rather than in-house, and the line remains active, with several current collections sold through the brand's own stores and website.

The designer, born in Hamburg in 1933 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 2019, was for decades one of fashion's most recognisable figures, leading Chanel from 1983 and Fendi from 1965 alongside his own label [4]. Since his death the company has described itself as the "sole custodians" of his legacy, continuing under chief executive Pier Paolo Righi.

Origin and founders

Karl Lagerfeld launched his eponymous ready-to-wear label in 1984, a year after taking creative control of Chanel [4]. The company presents the house as an extension of its founder's outlook, combining what it calls "Parisian classics with a rock-chic attitude and tailored silhouettes" and an "accessible, aspirational" approach to design. Its stated guiding principle, attributed to Lagerfeld, is to "embrace the present and invent the future."

The designer's own account of his work is summed up in a line the brand treats as a tagline: "I design like I breathe, you don't ask to breathe; it just happens" [3]. Beyond fashion he worked as a photographer, shooting brand campaigns from 1987, and as a publisher and bookshop owner.

Ownership and licensing

The Karl Lagerfeld label passed through several owners before returning to its founder. After early backing from Bidermann Industries and a period under the Cora Revillon Group, the brand was acquired in 1992 by Dunhill Holdings and the Vendôme Luxury Group for roughly 30 million dollars; Lagerfeld repurchased it in 1997 [4].

The fragrances themselves have always been made under license. Coty, through its Coty Prestige division, held the perfume rights into the early 2010s. On 25 October 2012, Karl Lagerfeld BV and Interparfums signed a worldwide, exclusive 20-year fragrance licence, replacing the Coty arrangement, which the parties ended by mutual consent [6]. The deal covered the creation, production and distribution of perfumes under the Karl Lagerfeld name.

The current state of that licence is recorded differently by different sources. Trade coverage reported that Inter Parfums, Inc., the United States-listed company, terminated its Karl Lagerfeld licence early, bringing the end date forward from 2032 to 2024 and taking an impairment loss of 5.7 million dollars [8]. The brand's own fragrance business, however, continues: its website actively sells multiple current collections [2], and the production associated with Interparfums SA of Paris remains in place. The two are distinct corporate entities sharing a similar name, and the early termination concerned the US-listed company rather than the Paris house.

Products

The first fragrance released under the Coty licence was Karleidoscope, a women's scent launched on 11 October 2011 exclusively through Sephora's European stores [5]. It was sold in a kaleidoscope-shaped bottle with a faceted lens showing the designer's silhouette, and its campaign starred the model Bianca Balti, photographed by Lagerfeld himself.

The first perfumes of the Interparfums era arrived in 2014 as a pair, Karl Lagerfeld for Her and Karl Lagerfeld for Him, also marketed as Karl Lagerfeld Paris [7]. The women's fragrance was built on citrus, fruit and flowers over a woody, musky base, opening with lemon and peach; the men's was an aromatic fougère of mandarin and lavender with a heart of green apple and violet. Baptiste Giabiconi and Kati Nescher fronted the campaign.

Later collections have grouped the perfumes around recurring themes. Places by Karl traces the designer's travels through scents named for Paris, New York, Rome and Tokyo, while Les Parfums Matières draws, in the company's words, on "his visionary approach to materials and designs." Other current lines include Karl Ikonik and Urban.

Philosophy and positioning

The house positions itself in the prestige tier, framing its design as accessible yet aspirational, with an aesthetic the company traces to Art Deco — "perfect forms, sharp angles and polished silhouettes." On sustainability, Karl Lagerfeld states that it is "committed to reducing the environmental footprint of the brand and its customers," though the packet records no specific certifications or measured commitments.

Current status

The Karl Lagerfeld fashion house remains active, operating more than 200 single-brand stores worldwide and continuing under chief executive Pier Paolo Righi. The fragrance line is likewise active: as of 2024 to 2025 the official site lists several current collections, including Places by Karl, Karl Ikonik, Les Parfums Matières and Urban, and new scents continue to appear under the Paris-based licensee [2].
