Overview
La Manufacture is a French niche fragrance house based in Paris, built around a single idea: translating the atmosphere of historic architecture into scent. It was founded in 2014 by Bruno Truchon Bartès, a fragrance-industry veteran, and each of its perfumes is composed by a named master perfumer and tied to a specific château, abbey or monument [14]. The house is owned by Création Beauté International, a Paris-based fragrance and beauty group that lists it among its niche brands [12].
The company frames its work as an encounter between two worlds. "A fragrance house born from the encounter between two captivating worlds: architecture and perfume," reads its own description, which invites customers to "explore places differently, not through sight or touch, but through scent and emotion." Rather than reconstructing the historical notes of a building, each composition aims to render its mood and light as an olfactory signature.

Origin & founders
The brand traces its beginning to the Donjon de Moret, a medieval keep near Fontainebleau owned by a friend of the founder. According to the launch account, the friend suggested creating a "Cologne du Donjon" that would unite Bruno Truchon Bartès's twin passions for historic architecture and perfumery [14]. That prompt grew into a first range, Les Colognes Essentielles — a set of citrus colognes including Rare, Noble and Précieuse, paired with scented candles.
Truchon Bartès came to the project from inside the industry rather than from a creative-perfumer background. Editorial accounts describe roughly 17 years spent in commercial and marketing roles at major fragrance companies including IFF, Givaudan and Robertet, where he says he learned perfumery through daily contact with master perfumers [16]. A retailer description has separately called him a "former president of Guerlain," but that claim is not supported by the founder's own interview or the trade coverage of the launch, and is not treated as established here.
The founding date itself is reported inconsistently across sources. Two editorial outlets — Fragrantica, whose article is the original launch announcement, and the beauty magazine Incenza — independently place the founding in 2014 [14][17]. A retailer listing instead gives 2019 [22]. The 2014 date, supported by the two editorial sources, is the one adopted in this article.
Ownership
La Manufacture is part of the portfolio of Création Beauté International (CBI), a Paris group founded by Hervé Josserand and headquartered at 10 Rue Singer in the 16th arrondissement — the same address registered for the perfume house [12]. CBI lists La Manufacture within its "Niche & Selective" division, alongside brands such as Le Couvent, Première Note, Lancel, Les Parfums Salvador Dali and Inès de la Fressange [12]. The group describes its remit as creating, producing and animating beauty brands, and says it operates across more than 100 countries and 6,500 stores.
The brand's founder and the group's founder are different people: Bruno Truchon Bartès created La Manufacture, while Hervé Josserand founded CBI, whose first fragrance brand was Première Note. The exact year CBI took on La Manufacture is not documented in available sources, though the shared Paris address and a parent-company contact email point to integration after the brand's launch.
Philosophy & positioning
The house positions itself around French craftsmanship and a link between place and perfume. It says each creation is "more than a product," presenting it as "an homage to beauty and timelessness," and its stated mission is to turn architectural sites into distinct olfactory signatures. In an interview, the founder summed up the brand's spirit in three words — handcrafted spirit, commitment and sincerity — and said that chasing trends would run against the brand's character [16].
Its perfumes are organised into two lines: the Essences collection, described as fresh and radiant compositions of citrus, musks and florals, and the Opus Matières collection, a deeper set built on rose, leather, woods and amber. The fragrances sell at a luxury price point through the brand's own online store and a network of partner boutiques.
Products & innovation
Each fragrance is attached to a named perfumer and a specific location, a structure the house treats as central to its identity. Noble and Rare were composed by Carla Chabert, with Noble drawing on mandarin and cardamom and Rare on bergamot, basil and vetiver. Bôharas, by Nicolas Bonneville, is built on cardamom, leather and amber and references Moroccan royal stables, while Grey Senses, by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, takes the Château de Chenonceau as its theme. Anne-Sophie Behaghel signed the early cologne Précieuse.
In 2017 the house released Admirabilis, its sixth fragrance, inspired by the 12th-century Cistercian abbey of Fontfroide in southern France and composed by Nathalie Koobus [18]. Koobus described building the scent around the play of light inside the cloister, "as a chiaroscuro." The catalogue has since grown to a full Opus Matières range of around fifteen eau de parfum, with Rare reissued in an eau de parfum concentration in 2024 [21].
Beyond fragrance, the founder has described an extension into scented candles under the name La Manufacture des Châteaux, made with a master chandler and housed in porcelain from a Limoges maker certified as an "entreprise du patrimoine vivant," a French label for businesses holding rare craft heritage [16]. The company states that its products are manufactured in France [19].
Recognition
The brand has been covered by specialist fragrance and beauty media. Fragrantica reported its arrival in 2014 as a new French perfume house, and Incenza published a feature on its heritage-and-passion positioning. French fragrance blogs including Tatousenti and the sustainability-focused Eco French Lab have reviewed individual releases and interviewed the founder.
Current status
La Manufacture is active. Its e-commerce site carries a current copyright notice, lists a full Opus Matières range of around fifteen eau de parfum and operates in both English and French, and the brand maintains an active Instagram account. It is distributed internationally, including in the Nordic market, and sits within the wider international reach of its parent group, Création Beauté International.
