LdB

LdB is a Swedish body-care brand founded in 1945, known for fragranced lotions, shower products and deodorants. The name is short for Lait de Beauté, French for "beauty milk" — a nod to the Parisian recipe behind its first cream. The brand is now owned by Orkla Care AB, part of the Norwegian group Orkla, which acquired it through the 2015 purchase of Cederroth [12]. Production has stayed in Sweden, at a factory in Falun.

According to LdB, its ambition has not changed much since the start: to give the day a good beginning with pleasant scents and softening skincare. The company markets its full range as vegan and presents itself as a long-running Swedish classic.

LdB began in 1945 in an ordinary villa basement, where the Swedish celebrity hairdresser Knut Wulff mixed the first products in a simple kitchen machine [2]. Wulff had brought the recipe back from Paris, and the products took the name Lait de Beauté — LdB for short. One scent from that first year, Creme Rich Jasmine, has remained part of the line ever since.

The English-language record adds that Wulff, born in Malmö in 1913, was assisted in developing LdB by an Estonian pharmacist named Tönnisson [6]. Wulff went on to build one of Sweden's largest beauty operations; by the 1970s his companies are reported to have supplied roughly half of the hair products and a third of the cosmetics sold on the Swedish market.

The brand grew quickly out of its small basement origins. In 1955 LdB was appointed royal purveyor by Princess Sibylla, who is said to have received her cream in a crystal jar [2]. The company has since marked the brand's 80th anniversary.

LdB's parent company today is Orkla Care AB, and the brand sits alongside Nordic personal-care names such as Dr. Greve, HTH, Perspirex and the Riemann P20 sunscreen line within the same group. The path to that ownership is only partly documented and the sources differ.

The brand's products were originally launched under the company Monsieur Robert, renamed Pierre Robert. In 1975 Wulff sold Pierre Robert AB and its brands to Unilever, according to the English Wikipedia account of his career [6]. The Swedish-language record instead traces LdB through an earlier owner, Hartford, before its sale to Cederroth in 2010 — then owned by the Nordic private-equity firm CapMan — and does not date the steps between [7]. Orkla acquired Cederroth from CapMan in 2015, folding LdB into Orkla Care AB [12]. How the brand moved between Unilever in the 1970s and Cederroth in 2010 is not clearly recorded in the available sources.

The naming of the Pierre Robert parent company is itself disputed. The Swedish commerce-history site handelnshistoria.se reports that "Pierre Robert" combined the first names of Wulff's sons, Pierre and Robert [8]; English Wikipedia is more skeptical, suggesting Wulff simply chose a French-sounding name because France was associated with fashion and luxury [6].

LdB positions itself as a simple, well-scented and softening line of Swedish-made body care that has kept its original idea since 1945. The company sums up its aim as giving the customer "a good start to the day" with appealing fragrances. Its tagline is "Dofter att älska" — scents to love. The range is sold as affordable, broadly available body care for sensitive, normal and dry skin.

The line centres on body lotion, shower cream, shower gel and deodorant. Beyond the original Creme Rich Jasmine, named scents include Citrus Essence, Vitalizing Sweet Pea, Oil Infused Macadamia and Passion Boost. Retailers describe the body lotions as moisturising and quick-absorbing, and note that the deodorants are alcohol-free and suited to sensitive skin.

The entire range is marketed as vegan, a positioning the company states plainly on its site [1]. That claim is backed by third-party Vegan Society certification, as noted by the retailer Eleven [9]. All products are manufactured at LdB's factory in Falun, Sweden.

LdB's most-cited distinction remains the 1955 royal warrant from Princess Sibylla. Its founder's wider role has drawn editorial attention: Sveriges Radio's programme Stil covered Knut Wulff as a Swedish beauty pioneer in a 2012 episode [13], and the commerce-history site handelnshistoria.se published a long profile of him and the creation of LdB [8].

LdB ties its current identity to two commitments: Swedish manufacturing and a fully vegan range. The company says all production remains in Falun, and its homepage announces that every product is now vegan. The brand also runs an ongoing partnership with Bröstcancerförbundet, the Swedish breast-cancer association, to which it pledges an annual donation and for which it prints self-examination guidance, under the name "Bröstkollen", onto its shower products and lotions.

LdB is active but no longer independent: it has been an acquired brand since 2015, when Orkla took over Cederroth [12]. The brand maintains a current website and an active Instagram account, and recent activity includes the breast-cancer partnership and the launch of a new fragrance series. Manufacturing continues in Falun, and distribution runs through Swedish pharmacies and drugstore and beauty retailers such as Apotea, Eleven and NordicFeel, with sales also reaching Denmark.
