Overview
Maison Francis Kurkdjian is a French luxury fragrance house founded in Paris in 2009 by the perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and the businessman Marc Chaya [1][2]. Based near the Place Vendôme, the house specialises in fragrance and presents its collection as a "fragrance wardrobe," designed in the tradition of French perfumery with a contemporary outlook. Since 2017 it has been majority-owned by the luxury group LVMH, which bought a controlling stake while leaving the two founders in their existing roles.
The house is best known for Baccarat Rouge 540, a scent that grew from a limited-edition commission into one of the best-selling fragrances in Europe and the United States, and later a viral phenomenon driven by reviewers on social media.
Origin and founders
The company was born from the meeting of two complementary figures. Francis Kurkdjian, a French perfumer of Armenian descent, had already made his name in the wider industry — at 24 he composed Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Mâle, which became one of the world's best-selling men's fragrances. In 2001 he opened a bespoke perfume workshop, and over the following years composed for houses including Dior, Guerlain and Saint Laurent. Marc Chaya, a Lebanese-French former partner at Ernst & Young, joined him as co-founder and president, taking the role of chief executive while Kurkdjian led the creative vision.
According to the company, Maison Francis Kurkdjian "was born in 2009 from the encounter between Francis Kurkdjian, a renowned perfumer ... and Marc Chaya," and it describes itself as "a new emblem of French know-how and lifestyle."
Ownership
In March 2017, LVMH acquired a majority share in the house for an undisclosed sum [2][4]. Both founders remained as shareholders and stayed on in their roles — Chaya as chief executive and Kurkdjian as creative director. The trade publication WWD framed the deal in the context of a market then leaning toward premium, niche perfumery, reporting that the brand had registered retail sales of about 25 million dollars in 2015, up roughly 40 percent on the previous year, with a presence in more than 40 countries [4]. Within LVMH the house sits alongside other fragrance and beauty names in the group, among them Guerlain, Acqua di Parma, Dior and Givenchy.
Philosophy and positioning
The house frames its work around the idea of a fragrance wardrobe, with the wearer choosing scents as they would clothing. Its stated codes are purity, sophistication, timelessness and what the company calls a reinvented classicism — a positioning at the luxury end of the fragrance market. Distribution is multi-channel: alongside its own boutiques, the house is carried by department stores and specialist retailers internationally, including, at the time of the LVMH deal, retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus.
Products and innovation
The house's signature creation is Baccarat Rouge 540. Its history spans two release events, which accounts for the year given varying by source. The fragrance was first commissioned in 2013 for the 250th anniversary of the crystal maker Baccarat and released in autumn 2014 as a limited edition in crystal bottles priced at 3,000 euros [3]. It was subsequently expanded into the house's mainstream line; Wikipedia's article on the perfumer dates this signature release to 2015 [2], while the dedicated article on the fragrance records the original 2014 limited edition [3]. Its name refers to the temperature at which Baccarat crystal is produced, and it is described as a "synthetic gourmand fragrance" with notes including Hedione, Ambroxan, cedar and saffron.
The scent went on to become one of the best-selling fragrances in Europe and the United States, a reach that widened further after it was "propelled by fragrance reviewers on TikTok" [2][3]. Its popularity also made it one of the most widely imitated fragrances on the market, with many consumers seeking lower-priced "dupes" [3].
Recognition
In 2024, the fragrance received the Hollywood Beauty Award for Fragrance of the Year [3]. Kurkdjian himself has drawn separate industry recognition over his career, including being named a Chevalier of Arts and Letters in 2008.
Current status
Maison Francis Kurkdjian remains an active, globally distributed fragrance house, operating under its own name as a maison within LVMH since the 2017 acquisition. Its most recent recorded milestone is the 2024 award for Baccarat Rouge 540 [3].
