Summary

Overview

Missoni is an Italian luxury fashion house based in Varese, founded in 1953 by Ottavio "Tai" Missoni and Rosita Missoni (née Jelmini) [2]. It is known for colourful knitwear built around zigzag and chevron patterns, and reached the peak of its fashion influence in the early 1970s. The house remains majority-owned by the founding family, and continues to operate across roughly 20 countries with a current chief executive and creative director. On Glowjakt, Missoni appears for its licensed fragrance line, which has been produced by the Italian perfume company Euroitalia since 2015 [3].

Origin & founders

The business began in 1953, when Ottavio and Rosita Missoni set up a small knitwear workshop in Gallarate, Italy. The two founders came from contrasting backgrounds. Ottavio, known as Tai, was born in 1921 in Ragusa, in Dalmatia, and was a competitive athlete before turning to fashion; he competed in the 400-metre hurdles. Rosita was born in 1931 in Golasecca, in the province of Varese, into a family connected to textiles — her maternal grandparents, the Torranis, ran a workshop that made shawls and embroidered fabric, where her parents also worked [1]. That background in cloth fed naturally into the couple's knitwear venture.

The label presented its first collection in Milan in 1958, and as the business grew the company built a new factory in Sumirago, in the Varese area, in 1969.

History & milestones

Through the late 1960s and 1970s Missoni established the colourful, pattern-led knitwear for which it became widely recognised. The founders kept control of the house for decades before handing it on. In 1996 they transferred control of the business to their three children, Vittorio, Luca and Angela [2]. Angela Missoni took over as creative head of womenswear in 1998, succeeding her mother.

The house was struck by two losses in 2013. On 4 January, a plane carrying Vittorio Missoni, then chief executive, went missing off the coast of Venezuela; the Venezuelan government announced in June that year that remains of the aircraft had been found. Ottavio Missoni died in May 2013, aged 92 [2]. Creative leadership has changed several times since: Alberto Caliri succeeded Angela Missoni in 2021, Filippo Grazioli was named creative director in 2022, and in October 2024 Grazioli departed and Caliri was reappointed to the role.

Ownership

Missoni has remained largely in family hands. In 2018, the family sold a 41.2% minority stake to the investment fund Fondo Strategico Italiano for €70 million, while retaining 58.8% [2]. The fragrance business operates separately under licence rather than in-house.

Products & innovation

Within beauty, Missoni is a fragrance brand. The company launched its first perfume in 1982, manufactured by Charles of the Ritz and developed and distributed by Max Factor [2]; one search source places this debut a year earlier, in 1981 [5], a minor discrepancy in the early licensing record.

The fragrance line changed hands over the years, with the Estée Lauder Companies collaborating on it before the licence moved to the Italian perfume manufacturer Euroitalia in 2015 [3]. (Wikipedia's brand summary still lists Estée Lauder as the current licensee, but trade coverage confirms the licence transferred to Euroitalia, which has produced new Missoni scents as recently as 2024 [3][4].) The first Euroitalia-made fragrance launched in November 2015, beginning in Italy with a London preview at Harrods, followed by a wider international rollout through the second half of 2016. In 2017 the partnership released Missoni Parfum Pour Homme, described as the brand's first men's scent in around two decades [4]. Euroitalia's president, Giovanni Sgariboldi, framed the project as an effort to carry the house's identity into scent, saying the aim was to transfer "as much as possible of the brand's DNA, its identity, and its unmistakable elegance, taste and sophistication" [3].

Controversies

In September 2011, a Missoni collaboration with the U.S. retailer Target drew brief but intense attention: low-cost Missoni variants sold out within about 24 hours and overwhelmed Target's website [2].

Current status

Missoni is an active company. According to figures cited by Wikipedia, it employed around 300 people in 2018 and operated in some 20 countries, with Livio Proli as chief executive and Alberto Caliri as creative director [2]. The fragrance line remains in production under the Euroitalia licence, with new releases reported as recently as 2024.
