Summary

Overview

Versace Fragrance is the perfume line of the Italian fashion house Versace, founded in Milan by designer Gianni Versace in 1978 [1]. The fashion house entered scent early, releasing its first perfume, Gianni Versace for Women, in 1981 [2]. Since 2005 the fragrances have been made and distributed not by Versace itself but under licence by the Italian beauty company EuroItalia, an arrangement that remains in place today.

The line is one part of a broader house that spans ready-to-wear, accessories, interiors and hospitality. On its company profile the house describes itself as built "on the principle of freedom," aiming to empower "fearless self-expression through every touchpoint" [1]. In fragrance terms this positions Versace within the designer-luxury tier, alongside its Italian fashion peers.

Origin and founders

Gianni Versace founded the house in Milan in 1978, initially under the name Gianni Versace Donna [2]. The company frames its identity around freedom and self-expression, describing a "fierce spirit of independence and progressivism" running through fashion, interiors, fragrance and hospitality [1]. Perfume followed within a few years of the label's launch: the first Versace scent, Gianni Versace for Women, appeared in 1981 [2].

History and the EuroItalia licence

For its first decades Versace ran fragrance and cosmetics through an in-house arm, Giver Profumi. That changed at the end of 2004, when the house sold Giver Profumi to EuroItalia. The Moodie Davitt Report, covering the sale in December 2004, noted that "the deal includes a multi-year licensing agreement, under which EuroItalia will manufacture and distribute fragrance, skin care and make-up products under the Versace and Versus brands" [3]. The working partnership is generally dated to 2005.

That licence has since been renewed and extended. In September 2021, during the period when Versace was owned by Capri Holdings, the agreement with EuroItalia was extended for a further 15 years, carrying it to roughly 2036 [4]. In the same announcement the Versace fragrance operation was described as "one of the largest designer luxury fragrance businesses in the world" [4]. Under this structure, the perfumes carry the Versace name while manufacturing and distribution sit with EuroItalia, independent of who owns the fashion house.

Ownership

Ownership of the Versace fashion house has changed twice in recent years. In January 2019, Gianni Versace S.r.l. joined the American group Capri Holdings [2]. On 2 December 2025, the Prada Group completed its acquisition of Versace from Capri Holdings; Wikipedia records the price as US$1.375 billion [2][5]. Throughout these changes the fragrance licence has stayed with EuroItalia, so the perfume business was not directly affected by the transfers of the fashion house.

Products

The Versace fragrance catalogue is built around several long-running pillars. Its licensee EuroItalia lists signature scents including Eros, offered in multiple variants such as Eros Pour Femme; Bright Crystal; Dylan Blue, released as both eau de parfum and eau de toilette; Yellow Diamond; and Crystal Emerald. These families anchor the line at the designer-luxury price point that the house associates with "Made in Italy" positioning.

Current status

Versace Fragrance is active. The Versace fashion house passed to the Prada Group in December 2025 [5], and the EuroItalia fragrance licence extended in 2021 runs for roughly 15 years, into the mid-2030s [4]. The perfume line continues to be produced and distributed under that agreement.
