Summary

Overview

Max Factor is an American color-cosmetics brand founded in Los Angeles in 1909 by Maksymilian Faktorowicz, a make-up artist and wig maker who built his reputation dressing the stars of early Hollywood [6]. The company grew from a film-industry workshop into one of the first mass-market make-up houses, credited with bringing professional cosmetics — and, the company says, the very word "make-up" — to ordinary women. Since 2015 it has been owned by Coty, which acquired it from Procter & Gamble; it operates today as a Coty brand rather than an independent company.

The brand still trades globally on its founder's heritage, marketing itself around a century of Hollywood make-up artistry while running modern campaigns under the tagline "FEARLESS. FORWARD. YOU."

Origin and founders

The founder, born Maksymilian Faktorowicz, came from Łódź in Congress Poland, then under the Russian Empire, where he ran a hair and beauty shop before emigrating to the United States [6]. He settled in Los Angeles to be near the growing film industry, supplying made-to-order wigs and theatrical make-up to the studios. According to the company, word of his work spread quickly and he was soon creating looks for leading screen actors while developing his own cosmetics for a natural appearance on film.

Sources differ on when the business itself began. Wikipedia and other reference works date the founding of Max Factor & Company to 1909 [6], and that is the year used here. The brand's own heritage timeline instead opens in 1872 — the year of Factor's birth — and marks 1914 as his first film make-up [2]; neither marks the company's formal founding. The make-up Factor created for Hollywood earned him an Academy Award in 1928 for cosmetics innovation in motion pictures, but his stated guiding belief was that glamour was made, not inborn: "You are not born glamorous. Glamour is created."

History and milestones

Max Factor's early decades tracked the rise of film. The company introduced its Colour Harmony principle in 1918, coordinating shades to a person's complexion, hair and eyes, and in 1920 began calling its products "make-up" — a term the brand says it coined, adopting a suggestion from Factor's son Frank [6]. The same period brought lip products designed to read on screen and, in 1935, Pan-Cake Make-up, developed for the demands of Technicolor film and later sold at retail after actresses began buying it for personal use. The brand describes Pan-Cake as the first commercially available foundation [3].

Factor died in 1938 at the age of 66, and his son Francis took over, adopting the name Max Factor, Jr. Under the second generation the company kept introducing firsts: the Creme Puff all-in-one powder base in 1953, the Erace concealer in 1954, and in 1958 a mascara applied with a wand rather than the older cake-and-brush method. A Max Factor Museum opened in Hollywood in 1984. Later milestones under corporate ownership included the long-wear Lipfinity lip colour in 2000, the recruitment of make-up artist Pat McGrath as global creative design director in 2004, and the False Lash Effect mascara in 2009.

Ownership

The company stayed in family hands for generations before being sold in 1973 for a reported US$500 million [6]. Procter & Gamble acquired the brand in 1991, and in 2015 Coty bought it from P&G as part of a roughly $12 billion purchase of beauty brands [6]. Coty relaunched Max Factor in 2018. Within Coty's portfolio it sits alongside other mass and prestige labels including Rimmel, Bourjois, Sally Hansen, Burberry and Calvin Klein.

Philosophy and positioning

Max Factor positions itself as a make-up brand rooted in professional artistry but aimed at a broad audience. Its stated mission is to put the tools of make-up artistry "into the hands of every woman," and more recent marketing frames the range as universal in appeal. Around the 2023 launch of a collection co-created with brand ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the line was described as "universal, genderless, ageless and complementary to every skin tone," with the company's chief brands officer calling inclusivity "central to who we are" [8].

Products and innovation

The brand's catalogue centres on face, eye, lip and nail make-up, with foundations and mascaras as core lines. Long-running signature products include the Facefinity All Day Flawless foundation, the False Lash Effect mascara and the Lipfinity lip colour. Max Factor presents its history as a sequence of product firsts — from the early Flexible Greasepaint made for the screen through Pan-Cake foundation, the Erace concealer stick and the wand mascara [3]. The company says it has "combined science and make-up artistry for over one hundred years."

Recognition

The most cited recognition is the 1928 Academy Award given to Factor for cosmetics developed for motion pictures [6]. The brand's heritage marketing also draws heavily on its associations with classic-Hollywood figures such as Jean Harlow, Ava Gardner and Marlene Dietrich, whose screen looks it credits to Factor [4]. In more recent years the brand has been covered in trade press around its ambassador partnership with Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who joined in 2021.

Current status

Max Factor is active but no longer an independent company; it operates as a Coty brand following the 2015 acquisition from Procter & Gamble [6]. Its distribution has shifted over time: P&G discontinued the brand in the United States by early 2010, though it continued internationally [6], and Coty has since reintroduced it to the US market and expanded into new territories, launching in India in July 2024. The brand remains globally distributed, with ongoing product launches and ambassador campaigns.
