Summary

Overview

Sally Hansen is an American nail and beauty brand founded in New York City in 1946 [5]. Built around affordable, do-it-yourself nail care, it grew from a two-product line into one of the most widely distributed nail brands in the world, sold in more than 55 countries as of 2017. The brand takes its name from its founder, Sally Hansen, and has been owned by the cosmetics group Coty since 2007 [7], operating today as one of Coty's consumer brands.

Origin and founders

The company was founded by Sally Hansen, born Sally Genevieve Finney. Sources give slightly different birth years: Refinery29 records 1907 [7], while Wikipedia lists 1908 [5]; both agree she died in 1963. She began her career in Los Angeles, moving there from Kansas City in 1922 to work as a dancer before running her own dance studio and working as a film choreographer. In 1935 she acquired her family's cosmetics store, La Finné, and rebranded it as House of Hollywood. In 1946 she left that business to establish her own eponymous company, Sally Hansen Inc., in New York City. According to the brand's own account, she built a household name from just two products.

An early formula, Hard As Nails, was trademarked and filed for a patent in 1957 [6]. A widely repeated origin story held that Hansen developed it together with a chemist husband in the late 1950s; Refinery29 notes that this account was later found to be inaccurate, and that no chemist husband was involved [7]. Wikipedia records that the company's first two trademarks were Hard As Nails and Mend-A-Nail.

Ownership

Sally Hansen sold her company in 1962 to Maradel Products [5]; Refinery29 dates the sale to 21 September 1962 for roughly $1.4 million, a sum equivalent to more than $11 million in later terms [7]. Maradel subsequently passed to Del Laboratories, and in 2007 Coty, Inc. acquired the brand [7]. Coty lists Sally Hansen among its consumer brands, alongside names such as Rimmel, Max Factor and Bourjois [6]. Wikipedia's account documents the initial 1962 sale to Maradel but does not extend to the later Del Laboratories or Coty ownership; the fuller chain runs from Sally Hansen Inc. through Maradel and Del Labs to Coty.

Philosophy and positioning

Sally Hansen positions itself as an accessible, self-directed nail brand. The company sums up its outlook with the line that "beauty should be fun, affordable, and entirely up to you," describing its audience as "the diy divas, the mani masters, and self-care queens." Coty's brand page frames the same idea around "making innovatively formulated beauty products for real women," and gives the brand's tagline as "FEARLESS. FORWARD. YOU." The products sit in the drugstore price tier and are sold through multiple retail channels.

Products and innovation

The brand's range covers nail colour, press-on nails, nail care, beauty tools, airbrush products and hair removal. Its longest-standing product is Hard As Nails, which Sally Hansen describes as its original nail strengthener, using a blend of film-formers to protect nails against chipping, splitting and cracking. Mend-A-Nail was among its earliest trademarks [5].

Its more recent signature line is Miracle Gel, a two-step polish the company presents as a home alternative to a salon gel manicure, achieving gel-like wear without a UV lamp. Sally Hansen describes it as a "100% vegan gel-like polish" built on patented technology, and states that it was the number-one long-wear polish in the United States over the 52-week period ending 22 June 2024 [3]. Other lines include Salon Effects press-on nails and the fast-drying Insta-Dri polish. The brand also cites proprietary COLORGRIP technology for longer wear and shine.

Recognition

In a 2017 brand-history feature, Refinery29 described Sally Hansen as "the number-one nail polish brand in the world" [7]. Wikipedia similarly notes that it became the leading nail brand in the United States. It also records that Hansen employed mostly women in her factory, describing her as championing women in the workforce [5].

Current status

Sally Hansen remains an active, trading brand, though it is no longer independent: it has been owned by Coty since 2007 and is operated as one of the group's consumer brands. It continues to release new products, including a 2026 launch described as a new generation of polish, press-ons and care-focused nail essentials [8], and maintains an e-commerce site with current lines such as Miracle Gel Supercharged Pinks.
