Overview
Mizensir is an artisanal perfume house based in Geneva, Switzerland, founded by the master perfumer Alberto Morillas. It began as a maker of scented candles and other home fragrances before expanding into fine perfume, and it remains an independent, family-run business that sells directly to customers through its own shops and website.
The house started life as a personal project. Morillas, a working perfumer who had spent decades composing fragrances for major fashion and beauty brands, wanted interior scents that met his own standards and, according to the company, could not find candles that satisfied him. He set out to make his own. The brand's name has not been publicly explained on its own pages.
Origin & founders
Alberto Morillas was born in Seville in 1950 and moved to Switzerland at the age of eleven. He joined the Geneva fragrance-and-flavour company Firmenich in 1970, initially in scientific research on natural essences, and taught himself perfumery on the side; he earned the title of Perfumer in 1977 and Master Perfumer in 1998. Over a long career he composed fragrances for many well-known houses, among them Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Kenzo, Bulgari and Gucci.
Sources disagree on exactly when Mizensir began. The brand's own history dates the house to 1999, describing it as born that year when Morillas and his collaborators combined their skills to make artisanal scented candles in Geneva [2]. Wikipedia and the perfume publication CaFleureBon instead place the start in 1997, stating that Morillas and his wife Claudine began a line of scented candles called Mizensir in that year [10][12]. The difference appears to be between an informal candle start and the formal founding of the house.
Products & innovation
For much of its existence Mizensir was a home-fragrance maker, and that remains a large part of the business. The company says it has kept its production knowledge in Geneva and continues the tradition of master candle-makers, offering more than a hundred references across candles, room sprays, diffusers and scented soaps. The brand frames candle-making as a craft in its own right, describing the work of "putting fragrances in wax" as requiring detailed knowledge of how scents burn and diffuse.
The fine-perfume line came later. In 2015 the house extended beyond home scents to launch the Mizensir Parfums collection [10]; accounts of its initial size differ slightly, with Wikipedia citing 17 perfumes and CaFleureBon 15 [10][12]. The company presents the line as a personal creative venture, saying Morillas wanted to "cultivate his secret garden" with the materials dearest to him and return to the basics of traditional perfumery, working without a commercial brief.
Among the fragrances singled out by the brand and by reviewers are Eau de Gingembre, built around a fresh-ginger note; Perfect Oud; Solar Blossom, an orange-blossom scent the brand links to Morillas's Seville birthplace; Musc Eternel, a musk composition; and Rose Exaltine, which pairs Bulgarian rose with oud. Raw materials the house highlights include vetiver, patchouli, orange blossom, vanilla, rose and oud, several sourced through the Firmenich "Naturals Together" programme, whose perfumers it says work with a research team in Grasse, France, to evaluate natural ingredients.
Philosophy & positioning
Mizensir positions itself as a perfumer-led house in which creative freedom comes before any marketing brief. Describing his own approach, Morillas has said, "I am led by emotion," and the brand emphasises a hand-craft sensibility extending to his habit of writing fragrance formulas by pen rather than computer. The fine fragrances sit at a luxury price point and are sold chiefly through the company's own channels, including boutiques in Geneva and in the French alpine resort of Megève, alongside its e-commerce site.
Recognition & press
The perfume publication CaFleureBon has reviewed the house in detail, describing Eau de Gingembre as having "one of the most delectably realistic fresh ginger notes in all perfumery" and framing the brand as a chance to see "what a master artist does when there's no brief to fill and the canvas is blank" [12]. The Perfume Society has published a house profile noting that Mizensir's fragrances "were unveiled to an expectant public in 2015" and describing Morillas's emotion-led, hand-written creative process [11]. Awards recorded in the sources, such as the Prix François Coty (2003), are attributed to Morillas personally rather than to Mizensir as a brand.
Current status
Mizensir is active. The house operates direct-to-consumer e-commerce shipping to multiple markets and runs two physical boutiques, in Geneva and Megève. New fragrances continue to appear, and the brand's own history states that the company is now run by Morillas's daughter, Véronique. No change of ownership to an outside company is recorded in the available sources.
