Summary

Overview

Nautica is an American nautical-inspired apparel and lifestyle brand founded in New York City in 1983 by designer David Chu [1]. It began with just six outerwear pieces and grew into a global label spanning more than 35 product categories in over 65 countries. The brand takes its name from the Latin word nauticus, meaning naval. Today Nautica is owned by Authentic Brands Group, which acquired it in 2018 [6].

Although Nautica is primarily a clothing brand, it reaches the beauty market through its licensed fragrance line, a small accessories segment best known for affordable men's aquatic colognes such as Nautica Voyage.

Origin & founders

Chu launched Nautica in 1983 with a collection of six colorful men's jackets that, in his telling, blended fashion with function. According to a WWD profile, the idea grew out of his love of ocean life: "I used to travel to the islands and loved being on the beach in St. Maarten and the Bahamas," he recalled [9]. The first design was what he called a sail-away jacket, refined over the following years.

The label found early traction. In its first year the collection was carried by retailers including Bloomingdale's, Barneys New York and Saks Fifth Avenue, with first-year sales of $700,000 followed by $2.5 million the next year. Nautica went on to ride the American sportswear wave of the era alongside brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Polo Ralph Lauren.

History & milestones

Nautica became the official brand of the US Sailing Team at the Olympic Games in 1993, reinforcing its connection to the water. It broadened beyond outerwear over the following decade, launching the Nautica Competition activewear line in 1996 and Nautica Jeans Co. in 1999. At its peak the company reported worldwide sales exceeding $1 billion, with roughly 1,500 in-store shops and more than 100 standalone stores [9].

In 2009 Nautica became a corporate sponsor of the ocean-conservation nonprofit Oceana. The brand marked its 30th anniversary in 2013 at New York Fashion Week with the launch of its Black Sail collection. In 2020 it introduced the Wavemakers initiative, profiling people working on positive change, alongside its Sustainably Crafted apparel collection.

Ownership

Nautica's ownership has changed hands several times. In 1984 the brand was acquired by State-O-Maine, a New York–based apparel company that renamed itself Nautica (later Nautica Enterprises) in 1994. VF Corporation acquired the brand in 2003. In March 2018 Authentic Brands Group announced it would buy Nautica from VF Corporation, with the sale completed on April 30, 2018 [6]. Wikipedia notes that since the acquisition the brand has been repositioned as an upper mid-range label.

Sources differ on how to describe the current corporate parent. Authentic Brands Group is listed as the brand's owner and holds its intellectual property, while Catalyst Brands is recorded as the operating parent company [6]. Authentic Brands Group is the entity that licenses the Nautica name; its chief executive Jamie Salter was quoted in the 2026 fragrance announcement describing the deal as an example of the company's "disciplined brand stewardship".

Sister brands within the Authentic Brands Group portfolio include Judith Leiber and Juicy Couture.

Philosophy & positioning

Nautica positions itself as a nautical-inspired American lifestyle brand built on quality and functional design. The company says it strives "to be more reflective of the rapidly changing world around us" through sustainability, social responsibility and functional design. In the fragrance market its colognes occupy an accessible, budget-friendly tier; editorial coverage describes them as affordable men's aquatic scents widely sold through drugstore and online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and FragranceNet [11].

Products & innovation

Within beauty, Nautica is present through fragrance rather than skincare or makeup. Its core franchises include Nautica Voyage, Nautica Blue, Nautica Green and Midnight Voyage, sold largely as eau de toilette and gift sets at mass-market price points.

Nautica Voyage, a woody aquatic fragrance for men, launched in 2006 and was created by perfumer Maurice Roucel [10]. FashionBeans describes it as a long-running budget favourite that has been "making waves in the fragrance community for nearly two decades," and calls it "a pioneer for inexpensive warm weather fresh fragrances" [10]. Nautica Blue, launched in 2005, is cited by the same publication as maintaining a high Amazon rating across more than 24,000 reviews [11].

The fragrances are produced under license rather than in-house. WWD reported that Coty Inc. has held the current Nautica fragrance license, and that Interparfums will take over under a new agreement [7]. Both WWD and an Interparfums press release describe the new arrangement as an exclusive 20-year worldwide license effective January 1, 2030, with Interparfums assuming full global responsibility for Nautica fragrances at that point [8]. Interparfums projected first-year fragrance sales above $70 million.

Sustainability

Nautica's environmental efforts center on its apparel rather than its fragrances. Its Sustainably Crafted collection uses materials the company describes as responsibly sourced, including organic cotton, recycled polyester, REPREVE (a recycled fiber made from plastic water bottles) and TENCEL, together with water-saving production methods. "At Nautica, sustainability isn't just a trend—it's a responsibility," the brand states [3]. It also sponsors Oceana in support of ocean-conservation work.

Current status

Nautica is active. It is owned by Authentic Brands Group, sells across more than 65 countries, and its fragrance line secured a new long-term global license in early 2026 [8]. In a statement on that deal, Interparfums chief executive Jean Madar said the brand "has amazing heritage and we believe we can bring back some energy, and authenticity into Nautica" [7].
