Summary

Overview

Guess is an American fashion and lifestyle company founded in Los Angeles in 1981 [3]. It began as a denim label and grew into a global house spanning apparel, accessories, eyewear, watches and fragrance, sold across more than 100 countries. The brand reports revenue of roughly $3 billion and around 1,600 stores. Its fragrance line — the part stocked by beauty retailers — is not produced by Guess itself but under an exclusive worldwide license held by Inter Parfums, Inc. since 2018.

The company remains active. In a deal of about $1.4 billion, Authentic Brands Group acquired a 51% stake in Guess, taking it private when the transaction closed in January 2026 [3].

Origin and founders

Guess was started by the Marciano brothers, who had moved from southern France to Los Angeles. Sources differ on how many founders to name. The company's own heritage site credits two brothers, Paul and Maurice Marciano, with establishing the label in 1981 [1]. Wikipedia and other references instead list four founding brothers — Georges, Maurice, Armand and Paul Marciano [3]. Both accounts agree on the founding year of 1981; the difference lies in how the origin story is framed.

The founders brought a European sensibility to American denim. According to the company, their breakthrough was a stonewashed, slim-fitting style with zippers at the ankle called the 3-zip Marilyn jean; Bloomingdale's placed an early order of two dozen pairs that, the brand says, sold out within hours. By Guess's account the name itself came from a McDonald's billboard slogan, "Guess what's in our new Big Mac?" Within its first year the label reached department stores including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, helping reposition denim as fashion rather than workwear.

History and milestones

From 1985 the brand became known for its black-and-white advertising campaigns, which won design awards and featured emerging models. The youngest brother, Paul Marciano, directed many of the campaigns himself. The "Guess Girls" who appeared in them included Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova and Carla Bruni, and the imagery became closely tied to the supermodel glamour of the 1980s and 1990s.

Ownership among the brothers shifted over time. In 1993 Georges Marciano sold his stake to his siblings for $214.2 million, and the remaining brothers borrowed to complete the purchase [3]. Guess went public in July 1996. In 2004 it expanded its accessories business and launched an upscale extension, Marciano. Later faces of the brand included Jennifer Lopez, announced in 2018.

Ownership

For most of its history Guess was an independent public company headquartered in Los Angeles. That changed in the mid-2020s: Authentic Brands Group acquired a 51% stake in a roughly $1.4 billion transaction, and the company went private as the deal finalized in January 2026 [3].

The fragrance business sits under a separate licensing arrangement. The rights to make and distribute Guess perfumes passed through several hands: Parlux held the license until 2010, when Coty acquired Parlux and took it over [11]. In 2018 Inter Parfums, Inc. signed an exclusive 15-year worldwide license, effective 1 April 2018, and later extended the agreement under Authentic Brands Group's ownership [12]. Inter Parfums' fragrance portfolio also includes licensed lines such as Lanvin, Rochas, Lacoste and Goutal Paris.

Philosophy and positioning

The company has long positioned itself around what it describes as "a young, sexy and adventurous lifestyle," pairing European design with American market appeal [1]. Much of that identity was built through advertising: Guess used its campaigns to turn unknown models into recognizable faces, and the brand's provocative black-and-white photography became a signature of its image.

Products and fragrance

Guess today markets collections across clothing, denim, jewelry, eyewear, watches, shoes, bags and fragrance. On the fragrance side — the category carried by beauty retailers — its better-known releases include Guess Seductive, a women's eau de toilette introduced in 2010 and created by perfumer Veronique Nyberg. When Inter Parfums took over the license in 2018, it built its expansion around two pillar scents, Guess 1981 and Guess 1981 Indigo, each offered in men's and women's versions [5]. Announcing the plan, Inter Parfums chief executive Jean Madar described Guess as "a great American brand with huge brand recognition outside of the U.S." [5]

Controversies

Guess has been the subject of several legal and reputational disputes. In 2018 the model Kate Upton publicly accused co-founder Paul Marciano of sexual assault and harassment. An internal investigation followed, Marciano stepped back from day-to-day responsibilities, and settlement agreements totaling about $500,000 were reached with five accusers [8]. In 2023 the company's board agreed to a $30 million settlement with company models over harassment claims involving Marciano, in what was reported as the "personal harem" case [9].

Other disputes have concerned intellectual property and labor. In 2012 Gucci was awarded $4.7 million in damages against Guess in a logo and design trademark case [3]. Amid sweatshop-labor lawsuits in the 1980s and 1990s, Guess contractors settled for $573,000 in back wages with the U.S. Department of Labor in 1992, after which production moved to Mexico [3]. In 2024 a group of street and graffiti artists sued the company, alleging it used their work for a clothing line.
