Overview
Rochas is a French fashion and fragrance house founded in Paris in 1925 by the couturier Marcel Rochas [2]. It began as a couture atelier and grew into a name known chiefly for perfume, with fragrances such as Femme, Madame Rochas and Eau de Rochas forming its lasting identity. Today the brand exists primarily as a fragrance label, though it continues to produce fashion collections.
Rochas is owned by the French group Interparfums SA, which bought the fashion and fragrance business from Procter & Gamble in 2015 for $108 million [9]. The company remains active, with fragrance launches and ready-to-wear collections presented into the mid-2020s, but its ownership has passed through several corporate hands over its history.
Origin and founders
Marcel Rochas opened his couture house at Place Beauvau in Paris in 1925, moving it to Rue Matignon in 1931 [2]. According to Wikipedia, he was among the designers who, with Elsa Schiaparelli, helped popularise padded shoulders in the early 1930s, and he was credited as an early designer of skirts with pockets [9]. The brand's heritage material describes his approach as favouring silhouette and restraint over theatrical display. It credits him with a series of fashion ideas, among them the guepiere, a form of bustier; the Robe Oiseau of 1934, drawn from Surrealist art; and the promotion of beach pyjamas as resort wear.
The house summarised its outlook in a three-word motto: "elegance, simplicite et jeunesse" — elegance, simplicity and youth. That phrasing still frames how the company presents itself.
Central to the brand's story is Helene Rochas, Marcel's wife and muse. A former dance and drama student, she became a leading model for the Avenue Matignon boutique before marrying the couturier, who dedicated the perfume Femme to her. The brand's account of her life notes that after Marcel Rochas died in 1955, she took over the business and became, in its words, one of France's first female chief executives, steering the company toward perfume. She was also a fixture of Parisian cultural life: the sculptor Cesar made a work modelled on her in 1967, Andy Warhol painted her portrait in 1975, and she hosted gatherings attended by figures such as Salvador Dali and Man Ray.
History and milestones
Rochas moved into fragrance in 1936 with its first three scents — Audace, Air Jeune and Avenue Matignon — presented in white opaline bottles. The pivotal release came in 1944 with Femme, created for Helene Rochas and housed in an amphora-shaped flacon by Lalique, later sold in a pink box trimmed with black lace. The brand dates Femme to 1944; Wikipedia records that it "launched into mass production in 1945," a distinction between its creation and its wider release rather than a disagreement over the year [2][9]. The scent, a fruity chypre, was the work of the perfumer Edmond Roudnitska, built on notes of plum, peach and spice over a base of oakmoss, leather and patchouli [12].
Under Helene Rochas the house leaned further into perfume. Madame Rochas followed in 1960 in a Baccarat crystal flacon, and the brand states it reached a leading luxury position by 1967. In 1970 came Eau de Rochas, presented as a cologne addressed to women; the company reports it has sold more than 55 million bottles [2]. Its citrus composition, built on lemon, bergamot and mandarin over oakmoss and vetiver, was created by the perfumer Nicolas Mamounas [12]. The brand describes it as belonging to a small group of enduring fragrances in French perfumery. Byzance, an opulent floral, arrived in 1987.
The fashion side proved less continuous. Wikipedia records that after Marcel Rochas's death in 1955 the name existed only as a fragrance until 1990, when Wella reintroduced a clothing line with the designer Peter O'Brien [9]. Later designers included Olivier Theyskens and Marco Zanini, who reopened the couture house, and Alessandro Dell'Acqua, who introduced menswear in 2017. Procter & Gamble discontinued the fashion division in 2006 before plans to revive it were announced in 2008.
In 2021 the brand launched Girl, which it describes as its first vegan fragrance, made with 90 percent natural ingredients [2].
Ownership
Rochas has changed hands repeatedly. It was controlled for years by Wella and later by Procter & Gamble, which held the fashion and fragrance business until 2015. In June of that year the French fragrance group Interparfums SA acquired Rochas from Procter & Gamble for $108 million [11]. Reporting the deal, the trade title Cosmetics Business noted that Interparfums chief executive Jean Madar credited the "successful integration of Rochas fragrances," with the legacy scents Eau de Rochas and Rochas Man driving sales, particularly in Spain and France.
For a period the fashion line was managed externally. Women's Wear Daily reported in 2023 that Rochas fashion was being brought back under Interparfums's own management, after the manufacturer HIM Co SpA had run it for the previous two years; the creative director Charles de Vilmorin left at the end of March 2023, and the in-house studio designed the following collection [10].
Within the Interparfums portfolio, Rochas sits alongside fragrance brands including Lanvin, Lacoste Fragrance, Goutal Paris, Guess and Hollister Co.
Philosophy and positioning
Rochas presents itself around elegance, femininity and refinement, expressed today mainly through fragrance rather than clothing. The company frames much of its perfume storytelling through Helene Rochas and the idea of independent women, describing Madame, for example, as the olfactory reflection of a generation of women in charge of their own lives. Its heritage scents have historically been positioned at the prestige end of the market, a placement reflected in the use of Baccarat and Lalique glasswork for its flacons [2].
Products and innovation
Fragrance is the brand's core category. Its heritage line centres on Femme (1944), Madame Rochas (1960) and Eau de Rochas (1970), the last still among its best sellers alongside newer releases such as Mademoiselle Rochas and Rochas Audace. The company groups several of these under a "heritage fragrances" banner, presenting Femme, Madame and Tocade around the theme of Helene Rochas and independent women. Mademoiselle Rochas is described as a resolutely Parisian women's fragrance, a fruity floral. The men's range includes Rochas Man and L'Homme Rochas.
The house has periodically reissued heritage scents, and Fragrantica's records note reissues of names such as Byzance and Lumiere. Its 2021 release Girl marked the brand's stated move into vegan formulation.
Recognition and press
Rochas's fragrances have been the subject of trade and industry coverage rather than a documented awards record. Cosmetics Business highlighted the commercial performance of the fragrance line following the 2015 acquisition, reporting that Interparfums's net sales rose in 2016 with Rochas among the contributing brands. Women's Wear Daily has covered the brand's fashion operations and their reorganisation under Interparfums.
Current status
Rochas remains an operating brand under Interparfums SA, which has owned it since the 2015 acquisition from Procter & Gamble [9]. Its official site featured 2025 fashion collections and recent fragrance launches, and it named Alessandro Vigilante as creative director from 2024. The brand's own news archive, however, carried no published articles at the time its pages were reviewed, and much of its visible activity centres on its fragrance range rather than fashion.
