Summary

Overview

Hollister Co. is an American lifestyle brand founded on 27 July 2000 by Abercrombie & Fitch Co., which opened the first Hollister store at Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio [4]. It was created as a younger, more accessibly priced sub-brand aimed at teenagers, built around a casual Southern California beach-and-surf aesthetic. Alongside apparel, Hollister sells a women's fragrance and body line; this is the part of the brand within Glowjakt's scope, and it is the focus of this article.

The brand remains active. It is one of three labels operated by the publicly listed Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF), and its fragrances are produced and distributed worldwide under an exclusive license held by Inter Parfums, Inc. [5]. The current women's range — including Vanilla Amour and Coconut Kini — is sold on hollisterco.com and through perfumeries and beauty retailers across Europe, including the Nordic markets.

Origin and founders

Hollister was launched not by an individual founder but by an existing corporation. Abercrombie & Fitch conceived it as a way to reach a 14-to-18 audience with lower price points than its namesake label, wrapping the new brand in an invented Southern California identity of surf, sun and beach culture.

That identity came with a fictional origin story. The parent company circulated a backstory about a "John M. Hollister" who supposedly emigrated to the Dutch East Indies in 1922 before settling in California and establishing the company. Wikipedia documents that this narrative has no historical basis: there was no such person tied to the brand's real origin, which was simply a corporate launch in Columbus, Ohio in 2000 [4]. The brand also positioned itself around the idea of surf culture rather than the sport itself; a company spokesperson said the appeal was "more about the lifestyle and inspiration, rather than the actual activity."

History and milestones

After its 2000 debut, Hollister expanded across American shopping malls with stores originally designed to resemble weathered beach shacks, complete with shuttered windows. A 40,000-square-foot flagship opened in SoHo, New York, in July 2009.

A turning point for the fragrance business came in 2014, when Abercrombie & Fitch signed an exclusive seven-year worldwide fragrance license with Inter Parfums, Inc., covering both the Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister brands [5]. The first scents developed under that agreement, Hollister Wave for Her and Hollister Wave for Him, launched in 2016. The same period saw a wider redesign that moved Hollister stores away from the dark beach-shack look toward brighter, more open storefronts.

In November 2019 the fragrance license was extended from its fixed seven-year term to an evergreen arrangement, terminable on three years' notice [5]. The SoHo flagship closed that same year as the company reduced its retail footprint.

Ownership

Ownership of Hollister depends on what is being described, and the packet records two valid answers. As an apparel and lifestyle brand, Hollister is owned outright by Abercrombie & Fitch Co., which holds the intellectual property and creative control; Wikipedia lists A&F as the parent company [4]. For the fragrance and body line specifically, the operationally relevant company is Inter Parfums, Inc. (NASDAQ: IPAR), which has manufactured and distributed Hollister scents under exclusive worldwide license since 2014 [5]. In effect, A&F owns and approves the brand while Inter Parfums develops, produces and sells the perfumes.

Inter Parfums, founded in 1982, operates a portfolio of licensed fragrance brands. Among the houses it produces alongside Hollister are Lanvin, Rochas, Lacoste, Goutal Paris and Guess.

Philosophy and positioning

Hollister presents its fragrance and body line as an accessible expression of a relaxed Southern California lifestyle, aimed at young shoppers. The parent group's brand statement describes Hollister clothing as "made for capturing moments, creating memories and being unapologetically you" [3], and its messaging leans on authenticity and experience rather than product specifications. Abercrombie & Fitch chief executive Fran Horowitz has framed the wider company purpose as helping customers "feel their most confident, comfortable and capable."

Within the fragrance range itself, the brand says its scents are designed to suit "every taste" and emphasizes "unique and long-lasting" results for everyday or evening wear [1].

Products and innovation

Hollister's women's fragrance line is built around warm, sweet and tropical scent profiles, drawing on notes such as vanilla, jasmine, coconut, lavender and amber. The current lineup — led by Vanilla Amour, which the brand describes as its "most-loved" scent, alongside Coconut Kini and Budding Romance — leans toward gourmand and floral compositions. The range is sold as compact perfume bottles and as larger body sprays, with sampler "Discovery Kits" offered for trying scents.

The brand's best-known fragrance pillar is Wave. Introduced in 2016 as the first launch under the Inter Parfums license, Wave for Her takes its inspiration from a California sunset, with listed notes including quince, cassis, carambola, hibiscus, orchid, crystal amber and sandalwood [7]; the companion Wave for Him is described as a "salty-woody-musky-aromatic fragrance for men" [8]. An earlier scent, Hollister SoCal, predates Wave; fragrance editorial site Fragrantica described it as "the scent of Southern California" that embodies "the energy of the beach lifestyle" [6].

The fragrances reach buyers through Hollister's own stores and website and, via Inter Parfums, through department stores and specialist beauty retailers across Europe, including the Nordic countries.

Current status

Hollister Co. is active. It is one of three brands under the publicly traded Abercrombie & Fitch Co., and its fragrance and body line continues to be produced under the in-force Inter Parfums license, which has run on an evergreen basis since the 2019 extension with no termination announced [5]. A current women's fragrance assortment is sold on hollisterco.com, and the products are distributed across all four Nordic markets. The brand marked its 25th year in 2025.
