Summary

Overview

Oribe is a professional hair care brand founded in New York in 2008 [8]. It was created by the celebrity hairstylist Oribe Canales together with Daniel Kaner, and it built its reputation on salon-grade styling products aimed at what the company calls the "hair-obsessed." The name is pronounced or-BAY, a spelling that stuck after people in the founder's American hometown struggled with the original Spanish pronunciation of his name.

The brand has been owned by the Japanese group Kao Corporation since its acquisition was announced in December 2017 [7], and it now operates within Kao's Salon Division. It remains active as a standalone luxury line, selling through salons, high-end retailers and its own e-commerce across roughly 40 markets, even though its founder died in 2018.

Origin & founders

Oribe Canales was a hairstylist whose editorial and backstage work in the 1980s and 1990s made him one of the better-known session stylists of his era. Born in Cuba in 1956, he moved to New York, trained under the hairdresser Garren, and went on to style fashion shows for houses including Versace, Chanel and Calvin Klein. According to Wikipedia, he transformed the looks of the supermodels Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford [6]. He opened his first salon on Manhattan's Upper West Side in 1987.

The hair care brand grew out of that professional background. In 2008 Canales partnered with Daniel Kaner to develop a professional styling line, framed by the company as "an edited line focused on the needs of the hair-obsessed" that combined traditional hairdressing with newer technology and higher-grade ingredients. Trade coverage of the later Kao deal names a third co-founder, Tevya Finger, and identifies the original parent as Luxury Brand Partners [8]; the brand's own history page credits Kaner as co-founder and does not mention Finger or Luxury Brand Partners. The two accounts do not contradict each other so much as differ in completeness.

Ownership

In December 2017, Kao USA Inc. agreed to buy Oribe Hair Care, LLC from Luxury Brand Partners and its other owners [7]. Terms were not officially disclosed; WWD reported an estimated purchase price of 400 to 430 million US dollars [8]. Some later Kao corporate summaries date the brand's entry into the group to 2018, the year the deal closed, rather than the 2017 announcement.

Under Kao, Oribe sits in the Salon Division alongside brands such as Goldwell and KMS, and Daniel Kaner stayed on as president after the acquisition. Its sister brands within the wider Kao portfolio include Molton Brown, John Frieda, Bioré and Bondi Sands.

Philosophy & positioning

Oribe positions itself as a luxury professional line, priced for the prestige market and developed with session hairstylists in mind. The company frames its approach around three stated principles — creative innovation, conscientious ingredient sourcing and considered environmental impact — and says each product is designed "with intention and care." Summing up the positioning at the time of the Kao deal, co-founder Daniel Kaner said that "hair care should be an immersive and luxury experience" [7].

The brand's products are distributed mainly through salons, with additional reach through high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Space NK and online through Amazon; the company has cited a base of roughly 2,000 high-end US salons and around 40 international markets [8].

Products & innovation

Oribe's range spans cleansing and conditioning, treatment, styling and finishing, and extends into fragrance, body and home. Its collections include Gold Lust, Signature, Hair Alchemy, Supershine and Beautiful Color, and recurring hero ingredients across these lines include watermelon seed oil, lychee fruit extract, edelweiss extract, argan oil and panthenol.

The brand's best-known product is its Dry Texturizing Spray, launched in 2010. According to the beauty publication Coveteur, the spray took three years to develop and was tested on clients including Jennifer Lopez and Miley Cyrus before release; co-founder Daniel Kaner has described it as the brand's number-one seller and said it "defined a category" [9]. Other well-known products include the Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo, the Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil and the Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray.

On formulation and ethics, the company states that Oribe never tests on animals and that it belongs to PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies program, and that its products meet EU formulation standards. It has also set out packaging and sustainability targets, including moving 14 bottles to fully post-consumer recycled plastic, offering lower-plastic liter refill pouches, and a stated goal of halving lifecycle emissions by 2030 against a science-based warming target.

Recognition

Oribe Canales received a Visionnaire award, presented by Sarah Jessica Parker, in 2011. The Dry Texturizing Spray has drawn sustained editorial attention: Coveteur reports that it has earned more than 60 beauty awards worldwide and was named one of WWD Beauty Inc's "Greatest Beauty Products of All Time" [9].

Current status

Oribe remains active and is owned by Kao Corporation, operating as a standalone luxury brand within the group's Salon Division. Its founder, Oribe Canales, died in 2018 [6], but the brand has continued to release new products and collaborations; recent examples include a Holiday 2025 collaboration with the Finnish artist Kustaa Saksi, and its site carries a 2026 copyright. Its stated scope is global, spanning around 40 international markets.
