Summary

Overview

Rose et Marius is a French fragrance and home-scent company based in Aix-en-Provence. It was founded in 2012 by Magali Fleurquin-Bonnard, who positions it as the first haute parfumerie house of Provence [1][3]. The range covers perfumes, scented candles and home diffusers, and a bath and body line, much of it built around Provençal imagery and refillable packaging.

The brand takes its name from the founder's grandmother, Rose, and pairs it with Marius, a traditional Provençal given name. Its products are tied throughout to memories of the family's country house in the region, and the company remains active, with a live catalogue, a boutique in Aix-en-Provence, and a separate e-shop for the United States.

Origin and founders

Rose et Marius was created by Magali Fleurquin-Bonnard, who had spent about fifteen years in the luxury sector at houses including Piaget, Kenzo and Christian Lacroix before starting the company [3]. According to the brand, the idea grew out of a year-long trip around the world, after which she chose to turn childhood memories from her grandmother Rose's Provençal bastide, or country manor, into a fragrance house [3].

Regional editorial coverage adds a note on timing. The French title Toutma dates the founder's realization to 2005, when a world tour led her to conclude that Provence sold everywhere but was represented mostly by mass-market rather than luxury brands [10]. The company itself gives 2012 as its founding year, the point at which the brand actually launched [3]; the two dates describe the idea and the launch rather than a disputed origin.

A recurring design motif comes from the patterned cement floor tiles of the family bastide. The company says these now appear as a signature across its creations, each tied to a particular memory.

Products and positioning

The company describes itself as offering perfumes, candles and home fragrances, and a bath and body range that includes solid soaps, shower gels and a rosé-wine-themed collection. Fragrances are grouped into families such as flowery, woody, fruity and fresh, and several are named for scenes of Provençal life. Its stated best-seller, Un Vin Rosé sous la Tonnelle ("Lunch Under the Arbour"), is built around the notes of a Provence rosé, with grapes, red fruits and elderberry. Others include La Vie en Roses et Marius, centred on the Centifolia rose of Provence, and Un Rendez-vous avec Cézanne, inspired by the painter's Mount Sainte-Victoire.

Rose et Marius presents itself as a luxury brand and leans on ingredients associated with high perfumery, among them Grasse roses, immortelle, sandalwood and white musk. It says it was the first to offer refillable candles, housed in Limoges porcelain vessels that can be washed and reused with a new scent [1]. Sales run mainly through the company's own channels: the boutique in Aix-en-Provence, which includes a perfume bar and offers scent-composition workshops, and its online shops for Europe and the United States.

Philosophy

The founder frames the brand as a way to share childhood memories and the art of living in Provence through work "handmade in France." Its tagline plays on the name: "to see la vie en Rose… et Marius." The company also emphasises artisanal production, saying its pieces are made by a small group of craftspeople, including a perfumer in Grasse and a porcelain workshop in Limoges.

Sustainability

Rose et Marius states that it makes about 90% of its products locally in Provence and that all of its collections are made in France [5]. It says most lines are refillable and runs a refill bar at the Aix boutique to cut down on packaging. The company also describes a tree-planting programme, under which it plants a tree for each order over 120 euros in Ensuès-la-Redonne in the Bouches-du-Rhône, choosing species suited to fire resistance and local wildlife [5]. It states that its products are not tested on animals.

Recognition

In 2017 the company received France's Artisans d'Art ("Craftsmen of Art") label, which recognises handmade production [3]. In 2021 two of its refillable candles were selected for the Grande Exposition du Fabriqué en France at the Élysée Palace, representing Provence among 106 products chosen from about 2,300 applications [9]. In 2022 the founder, Magali Fleurquin-Bonnard, was awarded the insignia of France's National Order of Merit [3]. The brand has also been covered by titles including ELLE Beauty and the regional newspaper La Provence, and it lists collaborations with a number of five-star hotels and restaurants.
