Summary

Overview

Shay & Blue is a British boutique fragrance house based in London's Marylebone district. It was founded in 2012 by Dom De Vetta, a former senior executive at Chanel and Jo Malone London, together with the Grasse-born perfumer Julie Massé [6]. The company makes clean, all-gender fine fragrance alongside a smaller range of body and cosmetic products, and positions its work against the mass-produced perfumery it argues has made most scents smell alike.

The brand remains active. Its site operates separate UK and US storefronts, runs current campaigns and seasonal promotions, and its fragrances are stocked by international retailers including Luckyscent and Harvey Nichols.

Thinner sourcing. The article relies largely on the brand's own statements (T2–T3). Glowpedia is seeking independent sources.

Origin and founders

Dom De Vetta spent much of his early career inside the fragrance industry, holding positions as Senior Vice President at Chanel and Global General Manager of Jo Malone London, with earlier experience at Lancôme [6]. Having questioned why so many perfumes smelled similar, he set out to build a house around scent he describes as honest, accessible and free of gender labels.

The name pairs personal history with a simple preference. "Shay was my grandmother's name," De Vetta has said. "And who doesn't love the colour blue?" [6] For the perfumery itself he turned to Julie Massé, who was born in Grasse in the south of France and trained under the perfumers Christine Nagel and Pierre Bourdon [6]. Massé, referred to within the company as "The Nose," frames her craft in similar terms: "Perfumery is a language. Composition is the translation of an artistic vision of life."

The founding date is recorded inconsistently. Independent sources — the Perfume Society, the retailer Luckyscent and the trade press — place the company's founding in 2012, a date supported by Monocle naming it among the year's best artisan fragrances [6]. The brand's own journal timeline instead lists 2013 as the year of "foundation and launch" [5]; on the available evidence, 2012 marks the company's establishment and first artisan releases, with 2013 more likely an early launch or expansion milestone.

Products and positioning

Shay & Blue's core output is fine fragrance, sold in extract and eau de parfum form, extended by hand and body washes, lotions, hand creams and lip tints. Its stated bestseller is Lilacs & Gooseberries, built on a lilac top note, an Indian gooseberry (amla) heart and a white amber base; the company reports a 4.7-star Trustpilot rating across more than 2,500 reviews [4]. Other recurring names in its line include Blood Oranges, Salt Caramel, Amber Rose and Atropa Belladonna, the last introduced in 2014.

Production is presented as a deliberate revival of small-batch, artisan methods. According to the company, raw materials are sourced from suppliers in Grasse — where the founders visit each year for hand-picked May rose and August jasmine — and blends are matured for over three months before being hand-filled into the house's smoky blue glass bottles. Central to the brand's positioning is inclusivity: it describes its perfumes as "clean, all-gender fragrance" and sums up its stance in the tagline "Follow your nose. Not the norm."

Sustainability

Ethics and environmental claims sit at the centre of how Shay & Blue presents itself. The company states its products have been vegan since 2012, "from our raw materials to our candle wax" [1], and that its range is certified cruelty-free through PETA approval [1]. It also describes its formulas as clean and free of sulfates, parabens and phthalates.

The brand's journal records a sequence of sustainability milestones: a 100% vegan commitment in 2016, carbon-neutral operations in 2020, a refillable collection in 2021 and B Corp certification in 2023 [5]. It further reports keeping plastic use to a claimed 1% and prioritising what it calls ethical sourcing and responsible suppliers.

Recognition

Shay & Blue has drawn attention from both the fragrance trade and the general press. Early recognition included Monocle's Best Artisan Fragrances listing in 2012, a Best Creative Director nod from CaFleureBon in 2013, and Best New Fragrance House from The Beauty Shortlist in 2014 [6]. In 2018 it won the Fragrance Foundation Award for Best Independent Brand [5]. Its fragrances, and Lilacs & Gooseberries in particular, have been featured in publications including Vogue, The Guardian, GQ, Grazia and Wallpaper.
